Adventist Health Systems Around the World

Medical work is the right hand of the gospel. It is necessary to the advancement of the cause of God. As through it men and women are led to see the importance of right habits of living, the saving power of the truth will be made known. Every city is to be entered by workers trained to do medical missionary work. As the right hand of the third angel's message, God's methods of treating disease will open doors for the entrance of present truth.--Testimonies, Vol. 7, p. 59.
I can see in the Lord's providences that the medical missionary work is to be a great entering wedge, whereby the diseased soul may be reached.--Counsels on Health, p. 535.
The Adventist Church owns and operates 168 hospitals and sanitariums around the world. The Adventist Church also operates 448 clinics and dispensaries world wide.  Adventist hospitals stand out as some of the best around the world. One of the most famous is Loma Linda Medical Center where Bahamian, Dr. Norman Gay attended and Loma Linda Dental School where Bahamian, Dr. Nigel Lewis attended. Loma Linda Medical Center is the home of one of the few Proton radiation treatment centers in North America.  Loma Linda was brought vividly into the eyes of the public when Dr. Leonard L. Bailey in 1984 performed the first baboon heart transplant in a new born to save her from a life-threatening birth defect. Today, hundreds of babies' lives have been saved with the transplant of real hearts. Thanks to an Adventist doctor at Loma Linda Medical Center, California.

Then there is Florida Hospital. It is perhaps one of the largest hospitals in the world and most certainly the largest Adventist hospital with 3025 bed. It is not just one hospital but a system of hospitals around the Orlando, Florida area. Here’s a quote from the hospital website:

"With seven hospitals and 14 Centra Care walk-in medical centers, Florida Hospital is one of the largest hospital systems in the country, caring for almost one-million patients every year. In fact, Florida Hospital treats more inpatients than any other hospital system in the country. . . . Florida Hospital specializes in a wide range of health services for the entire family, including many nationally and internationally recognized programs in cardiology, cancer, women's medicine, neurology, diabetes, orthopaedics and rehabilitation.   In addition to serving Central Florida residents, Florida Hospital serves as a major tertiary referral hospital throughout the Southeastern United States,  the Caribbean

Adventist health organizations designed to manage Adventist hospitals in different regions of the world:

Adventist Health System   Part of this worldwide network, Adventist Health System was founded in 1973 to support and strengthen Seventh-day Adventist healthcare organizations in the Southern and Southwestern regions of the United States.  It quickly became the largest not-for-profit Protestant healthcare provider in the nation.  Adventist Health System organizations provide 36 hospitals totaling more than 6,000 licensed beds, care for nearly 4 million patients each year in inpatient, outpatient and emergency room visits, and employ almost 43,000 members of their communities in full and part-time positions.

Adventist Health  Adventist Health, headquartered in Roseville, California, operates health care facilities throughout California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington. Our system includes 19 hospitals with more than 2,800 beds, 18,000 employees, numerous clinics and outpatient facilities, 16 home care agencies and three joint-venture retirement centers.

Adventist Health International  Adventist Health International (AHI) is a management organization committed to partnering with health care services in developing countries. Based at Loma Linda University in California, it utilizes the health care understanding, strength, and commitment of the Seventh-day Adventist church to mobilize expertise, personnel, and other resources to promote quality health for all.  AHI currently manages 52 clinics and 32 hospitals in 13 countries, including Cameroon, Ethiopia, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, India, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tchad, Trinidad, Venezuela, and Zambia.

and South America. For the last five years, Florida Hospital has been recognized as one the best hospitals in the country by U.S. News & World Report."

Another outstanding Adventist hospital close to the Bahamas is Andrews Memorial Hospital (no website), Kingston, Jamaica. We can truly say it is our hospital because it is owned and operated by the West Indies Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. Pastor Patrick Allen serves as the chairman of the board. Although only equipped with fifty beds it is a modern hospital providing professional care for the city of Kingston and is widely respected around the Caribbean. Andrews Memorial Hospital offers out-patient treatment, mammography, x-ray services, emergency services, a dental clinic, a maternity unit, antenatal clinic, physiotherapy, ultrasounds, a pharmacy, a laboratory and a vegetarian cafe. On March 14, 2007 commissioned a new GE High Speed CT Computerized Axial Tomography System (CT Scan machine) to enhance its overall delivery of patient care.    The graphics above is the logo of the Sydney Adventist Hospital, Australia
