| Frances was a
very serious hurricane that passed through the entire 750-mile-long archipelago
of the Bahamas, September 2 to 6, 2004. Every island in the
Bahamas was affected. The more serious damage was done to the
islands of Grand Bahama, San Salvador, Long Island, and Eleuthera.
In the Nassau Guardian for Thursday, September 9, 2004, the headlines
were "2,000 Plus buildings declared uninhabitable." Director
of Works for the Government, Mr. Colin Marshall states: "We can say
that some 1,700 building are unusable in Grand Bahama and some 600 are
destroyed." For days after the hurricane, electricity,
telephone, and water were unavailable on the island of Grand
Bahama. Many of the homeless are seeking shelter with relatives on
other islands or are in temporary shelter while relief agencies and the government
seek to help rebuild and restore to their lives normalcy. Mr.
Marshall also said: "In Acklins 12 buildings have been rendered
uninhabitable, none destroyed; Berry Islands, four unusable, none
destroyed; Cat Island, 22 unusable, 11 destroyed; in Eleuthera nine
uninhabitable, three destroyed. In Mayaguana, he continued, two
buildings were rendered uninhabitable, two destroyed; In Rum Cay, three
unusable, none destroyed; and in San Salvador 23 unusable and 17
destroyed, with a large number being in United Estates." See Nassau
