- Saturday night, May 10, 2008, was a wonderful
night at the National Center for the Performing Arts, Nassau.
Journey,
a student musical ensemble from
sAndrews University,
Berrien Springs, Michigan, USA, provided a genre of rich
negro spirituals, to the amazement of the hundreds present, without musical
instruments of any kind. It was great, disciplined, and harmonious a capella singing. Oh! Yes, they did provide the
old-fashioned feet stumping and finger clicking which really was a
refreshing difference to what many were used to. Only fifteen Journey
members came to Nassau to
- perform this concert.
Many would agree that the group sounded like fifty instead.
The entire group consists of about thirty students. Dr.
Julie Lindsay, assistant Professor of Music and vocal instructor
at Andrews University, is the faculty sponsor of the group.
Journey has gained the respect and recognition by the
faculty, staff, and students at Andrews University as being one
of the most outstanding performing arts groups on campus.
Although most of the spirituals were familiar,
yet the arrangements were so unique it had the listeners anxiously waiting,
with ears extended, what would happen next.
It was certainly a joy to see young Christian
people, all of whom were graduate students, able to sing more than fifteen
songs from memory with no hint from a teleprompter of script.
Journey was formed about five years ago with the concept to preserve the
rich culture of negro spirituals. See photos below.

Journey's music is sweet. It is not harsh.
The voices blend with rich tones as they sing well known classical
spirituals, hymns, and some contemporary tunes. You will be
richly bless when you attend this concert

- Taken from Journey Website
Journey has been under God's direction from its
inception in 2003. We have seen God take us from simple plans to those of
great vision and success. In October of 2003, two young men, Baron Sovory
and Martin L. Lister--also cousins--were impressed to start an ensemble that
would sing the good old spirituals of composers like Moses Hogan, Nathan
Carter, and many others.
They came into contact with two young ladies, Jewel Scott and Marguerite
Brennen (music majors), who shared their zeal for this kind of music.
Quickly, they gathered a few musicians, and on October 26, 2003 in the
chapel of the Women's dorm on the campus of Andrews University, the group
had their first meeting.
At first, their only concern was to share their joy of singing through
spirituals. However, as time passed, the Holy Spirit planted seeds in the
hearts of each member. Through inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the
co-directors Jewel Scott and Marguerite Brennen began to make plans to
extend the ensembles vision into a ministry that would extend far and wide.
Plans were initiated to make this goal an attainable reality, thus one of
their first orders of business was to give the group a name. After much
reflection, it was decided that Journey would be the most appropriate title.
It echoed our mission and purpose in a very clear and effective way.
