THE LOGOS

A Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Weekly Publication Volume 5, Number 27, July 01, 2000

Over 400 Attend General Conference

During the week, more than four hundred local Adventists traveled to Toronto, Canada, for the 57th General Conference Session of Seventh-day Adventists. From Thursday, June 29, to July 8 some 2000 delegates will take park in daily worship and business sessions to look at the issues of leadership, church policies, family-life, health and matters of general concerns.

In addition to delegates, approximately 60,00 church members and observers will converge in the largest convention in history of Toronto at the Sky Dome and the Metro Toronto convention Center. At this session, which is held once every five years

(quinqennium), a segment providing training in seminars and workshop will cater to pastors, their wives and workers in general.

As the delegation departed for Toronto, Pastor Keith Albury, President of the Conference, emphasized that the Adventists community regrets the passing of Arch- Deacon Williams Thompson, who struggled for his life after having been shot in his home. Our prayers also go out to his family as they go through this time of bereavement. We also pray for this nation caught in the gip of escalating crime and lawlessness. Pastor Albury also indicated that this is not the time to simply become "problem describers" and "finger-pointing specialists" but participants in stamping out this scourge.

In this regard, we Adventists continue our programs of strengthening families, offering hope and meaningful positive alternatives to young people and proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ which we are convinced is the only hope for all persons.

With the summer upon us, we are pleased to present once again a menu of activities for the youth of our nation. Beginning on Monday, June 26, young men and women began attending the Jeff Rodgers Basketball Camp at Bahamas Academy on Wulff Road. There they will not only learn the principles and skills of basketball, but also learn about values and principles of life. Also at Bahamas Academy a computer camp commenced on June 26. The youth of our Conference will spearhead a four-week evangelistic thrust against the theme "Online With Christ" beginning on July 16 on the grounds of the former Jumbey Village. This effort, featuring the preaching of young, pulpiteer Basil Sturrup, and the combined and gifted singing of Adventist youth, is sure to steer the youth of our nation in right directions. Nightly counseling will be offered to all. In fact as of August 1 Adventists will reassign Pastor Barrington Brennen, a trained counselor, to full-time counseling in order to help address the needs of hurting and marginalized individuals.

Various churches will also sponsor Vacation Bible Schools through their local church districts scattered throughout the Bahamas. These schools, which operate from Monday to Friday, cater mainly to children. A outdoor camp in nature will be held in South Andros from August 13 to 20. Applications may be had at the Adventists, Headquarters on Harrold Road. For information persons may contact our office at 341-402. Finally, we implore all to rally together for meaningful solutions. We continue to pray for those in government and especially our Prime Minister and his family. Condolences are offered to the family of the late labour leader, Sir Randol Fawkes, and all bereaving families.
