THE LOGOS |
| A Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Weekly Publication Volume 5, Number 45, November 4, 2000 |
Sincerest appreciation goes out to our speaker Mr. Dwayne Wallace, a former student of Bahamas Academy and currently the Director of Marketing and Sales at the Broadcasting Corporation of the Bahamas, who admonished students to become model citizens who care about their Bahamas and keep it clean, love their neighbours, take care of their parents, teachers, and elders, stay in school and study hard, and are true to their God, people and Bahamaland.
At the conclusion of the event, students, who displayed admirable qualities in cleanliness, hard work and behaviour for the first part of the school term, received student-of-the-month pins. They were Alvonee Penn (K5 Rahming), Tameka Rolle (K5 Powell), Terez Evans (K5 Moncur), Shakelle Meadows (1 Rolle), Olympia Kelly (1 Frazier), Rubin Campbell (1 Forbes), Cherrie Blackmore (2 Ferril), Lafran Smith (2 Lynes), Shandelle Strachan (2 Humes), Pierrca Heastie (3 Cox), Deandra Ximinies (3 Lloyd), Kenreah Brown (3 Kelly), Makiya Cargill (4 Burrows), Inga Bethel (4 Morris), Tamara Mackey (4 Toote/Smith), Justin Ingraham (5 Ferguson), Teora Murray (5 Jackman), Ralden Dean (5 Jacques), Michael Turner (6 Jones), Kenny Deveaux (6 Cleare), and Hueneka Hanna (6 Sands). Banner Class Awards were given to K5 Rahming from the lower division and Grade 4 Morris won from the Upper division.
Thank you, committee members, staff and students for making this event memorable.
-Sherlene Rahming
CENTREVILLE'S PATHFINDER DAY
Pathfinder Day is the day set aside for the Pathfinders to share their faith through participation the Sabbath School , the Divine hour as well as the afternoon service.
On Sabbath, October 21, 2000, Centreville's Pathfinder Day was celebrated. Eighty-two Pathfinders along with their director, associate directors and counselors, dressed smartly in full uniforms, assembled at the Centreville Church for the Pathfinder Day Emphasis.
Our speaker for the divine hour was our very own Pastor Dr. Leonard A. Johnson, Executive Secretary, Bahamas Conference of SDA and Pastor of the New Providence Church. The Pathfinder Choir was something to behold as they sang "My Help Cometh From The Lord." Pastor Johnson spoke on the topic "What's In A Name?"
At three o'clock the Pathfinders, along with several Pathfinders and Master guides from our sister churches, assembled at the Bahamas Academy School grounds for our annual Pathfinder march. Our Conference Pathfinder Band, under the direction of Brother Kirk Price, led this march. Many persons along the route enquired whether they could have their children join our club. We say to these parents, 'your boys and girls are welcome to join. There is no joining fee.'
Once we arrived at the Centreville Church, we entered into our Investiture Service with a lively song service. Pastor E.. Danny Clarke, Youth Director of the Bahamas Conference, gave the Charge to those who were invested. There were 12 Eager Beavers ranging from ages 22 months to six years receiving scarves, uniform pins and honor chips. Those invested were 6 Busy Bees, 7 Sunbeams, 13 Builders, 6 Helping Hands, 4 Friends, 4 Companions, 3 Explorers 1 Ranger and 6 Voyagers. In addition, we had several new members who had joined in recent weeks.
We give God thanks for yet another successful year in the Pathfinder Ministry.
-Maureen J. Gilbert, Pathfinder Director
GRANDDAUGHTER OF 1ST ADVENTISTS TURNS 94
Mrs. Floy Louise Wood-Rollins, the oldest granddaughter of Mr. William Charles Antonio and Mrs. Mary C. Griffith Antonio, the first Seventh-day Adventists in the colony of the Bahamas in 1893, celebrated her 94th birthday on Wednesday, October 25, 2000.
Mrs. Rollins was born in Lower Bogue, Eleuthera, to the late Mrs. Evangeline Louise Antonio-Wood Holmes who traveled to the Out Islands as a Seventh-day Adventist Bible worker. Her father, the late Mr. Elijah Conrad Wood of Gregory Town, Eleuthera, was a schoolteacher who also taught music.
Mrs. Rollins and her twin sisters were among the first members of the first Seventh-day Adventist Sabbath School; the first Adventist elementary school, at which Mrs. Coffin was a teacher, and they were also members of the first official SDA Church, which was located on Shirley Street. At present, Mrs. Rollins is also the only surviving member of the historic church photograph recorded in 1914 of the 35 members in front of the original wooden Shirley Street Church. The photograph included her mother, grandmother, twin sisters: Mrs. Maisie Albury Wood-Grant and Mrs. Madge Antonio Wood-Guillaume.
Mrs. Rollins remembers when it was not fashionable to be a Seventh-day Adventist. She recalls how persons who decided to follow the Bible teachers were baptized and became Seventh-day Adventist but lost their jobs because at that time the workweek included Saturday.
On her birthday, Wednesday last, Mrs. Rollins spent a quiet day at home among family and friends. On Sabbath, she worshipped at her church, Hilliview, giving God the praise for once again sparing her life to see another birthday. This she attributes to her healthy lifestyle, daily exercise and 46 years of a vegetarian diet and her life-long practice of temperance.

Preventing Burnout
To prevent burnout, we must maintain balance in our lives. Like the apostle Paul, we need to learn the secret of contentment in every situation (Phil. 4:12-13)
Submit your will to God
Because God will never ask us to do more than we are capable of doing, this is an instant stress reliever.
Do what you enjoy doing
Burnouts come from doing things we really don't enjoy doing, or doing things for the wrong reasons
Get adequate rest
Studies indicate we need 7 to 9 hours of sleep each day. Relieve midday stress with a 10-to-15 minute power nap.
Get proper nutrition
Eating too much can be just as damaging as eating too little. Focus on a high quality plant protein diet complete with complex carbohydrates.
