THE LOGOS A Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Weekly Publication Volume 6, Number 29, July 21, 2001

Volunteers Needed! During this past school year, the Special Services Unit of the Office of Education was able to assist the schools in identifying the needs of various students and gave guidance as to how those needs can be addressed. Under the direction of a school psychologist, Mrs. Ann Albury, and a trained counselor, Mrs. Denise Johnson, this unit has tried to make an impact in this regard.

Individuals who are acquainted with the Seventh-day Adventists system of education will know that it seeks to develop the whole person. But the extent to which the schools are able to achieve this goal depends on how much they know about the children under their care. Therefore, it is important for the schools to determine the needs of the children and ensure that those needs are properly addressed.

As we begin a new school year, we realize that we must move forward yet another step. When effective programs are designed and organized in the schools, we know this will help to correct and counteract difficulties which prevent students from performing as well as they are capable of doing.

As a part of the ongoing effort to improve our educational system, the Special Services Unit of the Office of Education, in conjunction with the Elementary and Secondary Schools, is seeking to implement a pilot program for students identified as "At Risk Learners." This program intends to meet the needs of these students by giving individualized help in Reading and Mathematics.

Another program to be implemented this coming school year will be our Mentoring Program. Many children need appropriate role models to assist them in focusing on achieving their life goals. Assigning students to Mentors can be effective in helping students begin and motivate them to work toward the reversal of their under achievement pattern. We are looking for role models; past students and church members who will be willing to be a part of this program.

Additionally, we are looking for individuals who are willing to volunteer to assist for a few hours each week in the Special Services Unit. If you are a retired teacher, or an individual interested in helping these "at risk learners," please contact Dr. John Carey 341-4021, Ann Albury 3277464 and Denise Johnson 341-2710. We solicit your help. -School Psychologist, Ann Albury

Bluff, North Eleuthera, SDA Homecoming The Bluff Seventh-day Adventist Church staged a spectacular homecoming weekend from Friday through Sunday, July 6 through 8. To kick off the event, a vesper service was held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at The Bluff Church. Elder Lynden Williams spoke on the theme "Preserving the Past, Preparing for the Future." He charged God's people to plan for a wider and broader scope of service in order to expand God's kingdom. One of the means to accomplish this goal is through technology, he stated. We, who are modern Israel, should take advantage of the opportunity to enhance God's work, he said, adding that planning is quick and convenient with the aid of the computer and television. The saints who have passed on were not equipped as we are today, he said. However, we must preserve the godly examples, acquire more land for churches, and construct bigger and better structures in the time that remains, Pastor Williams said.

On Sabbath, July 7, Sabbath School was the leading programme. The lesson study was led by a six-member panel. Each participant contributed his views on grace coupled with faith/works, while individuals from the audience made their inputs with questions or comments.

Pastor Keith Albury, president of the Bahamas Conference of Adventists, accompanied by his wife, Sister Ann Albury, was present, and delivered the message for the divine hour. His theme was "Going back to Bethel." Did not the hearts of his audience burn within them as God's word went forth with power!

A group of some 20 to 25 persons traveled from Nassau to North Eleuthera for this special homecoming. This number included members of the recently formed Eleuthera Seventh-day Adventist Association, which was established with the assistance of the district pastor. The other persons were Adventist believers who reside in New Providence.

Additionally, members from the SDA churches on the island - from Gregory Town to Palmetto Point - converged on the Bluff Church for the special services. A potluck dinner was hosted in the primary school, situated on a hill overlooking the seaside. The meal was special, as was the fellowship.

The objective of the association is to assist churches in the Eleuthera District in their quest for growth and improvement, both spiritually and temporally, under the leadership of Pastor Williams and his wife, Jackie.

Brother Curtis Bryan, president, along with other officers and members of the association, invites all other interested Eleutherans and friends of the Advent faith to join this worthy effort to advance God's work on the island. - Cutel Symmonett, assistant secretary of the association

Northern Region, Bahamas During the week of July 9 to 13, the "Nation" celebrated another Independence anniversary, its 28th. How swiftly time has passed! The achievement have been many and great, some loved ones and national heroes have fallen asleep but we who have been spared must give thanks and praise for the Almighty's many blessings on us.

As a church, the divine command to go into all the islands, cays and world to spread the gospel still stands. While outwardly our faces show smiles of joy and happiness, internally, hearts should be deeply concerned about the statistics of:

On Saturday, July 7, the Forceful Youth choir under the direction of Dr. Marvin Smith and musician Mr. Franz Scott sent the message loud and clear that "God is a Rock and He is more than Enough."

This theme was supported by first Elder and Lay preacher Louis Thurston who stated that: 1) God is also available any time. He has a call waiting system through Prayer which should be a first choice and not a last resort. 2) Christianity is more than church membership; it is love in action. While the society looks to politicians to find all the answers to the social ills, it is the church that should lead people to Christ, for He is more than enough. It is only as members experience Christ and His love for themselves, can they be able to impart them. Best wishes, Bahamaland.-Evelyn Lopez, Communication Secretary
