Union President Says Farewell

Pastor Leon B. Wellington, outgoing president of West Indies Union, itinerated for the final time in his capacity as Union President in our field last weekend. It began on Friday, September 8, in the Grand Bahama district on the occasion of the Grand Bahama Family Life Seminar. Accompanied by Mrs. Wellington and Pastor Keith D. Albury, Conference President, Elder Wellington brought remarks and offered appreciation for the support given him during his tenure of office.

The following morning, Sabbath, September 9, Pastor Wellington visited a number of our congregations in New Providence before settling at the Hillview SDA Church where he delivered the sermon during the Divine Service. He also employed the occasion to applaud the members for the pastoral care and attention given to the former Prime Minister of the Bahamas and member of Hillview, Sir Lynden Pindling.

His final appointment was at the Grant's Town Church where its members were celebrating their 70th anniversary and Super Sabbath. Speaking from Matthew 24 and 1 Peter 1, Pastor Wellington reminded his listeners of the signs pointing to the second coming. He also explained to Grant's Town that "Almost home is not the same as being at home." Additionally, he and his wife were presented with a plaque of appreciation and a monetary gift. Once again, they thanked all in attendance.

The Conference Administration, on behalf of all members, wishes the Wellingtons God's speed and blessings as they prepare to relocate to the Division Office in Miami. Editor

New President for Oldest Adventist Publishing Association

Pastor Robert S. Smith has been elected president of the Review and Herald Publishing Association, an institution owned and operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The decision was made at a September 6 meeting of the Review board. Announcing the decision to employees of the publishing house, Pastor Jan Paulsen, president of the Adventist Church worldwide, said Smith had been elected by the board "after praying together, after searching our hearts, and speaking very openly and candidly."

For the past 14 years Smith has served as publishing director for the Adventist Church in North America. In his more than 30 years experience in the publishing field, Smith has also served as vice-president for marketing at the Review and Herald and associate director of publishing for the Adventist Church worldwide.

Dr. William Johnsson, editor of the 'Adventist Review' and a member of the Review board, says that the search committee presented six names for the board's consideration. "There was a very good spirit throughout the deliberations," says Johnsson. "My sense was that the process was both fair and non-contentious."

Smith replaces outgoing Review president Pastor Ted Wilson, who in July was elected as a general vice- president of the Adventist Church's General Conference.

Mark Thomas, Review and Herald vice-president for marketing, has known Smith since 1973 and says that he has "an extensive background in publishing" and is a "warm, friendly leader."

Established in 1849, the Review is the oldest institution of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Today, the Review employs more than 220 people and last year reported an annual revenue turnover of $26 million. The Review produces a wide range of Christian books, magazines, and devotional and educational material. Some of its flagship magazine publications include the 'Adventist Review', 'Listen', 'Guide', 'Insight' and the lifestyle magazine,

'Vibrant Life'. [Bettina Krause]

HEALTH SEMINAR IN GRAND BAHAMA AND NASSAU

On Wednesday, September 13, Pastor Paul A. Scavella, Health Ministries Director of Bahamas Conference, welcomed Pastor Milton Gregory, along with Dr. and Mrs. Marshall and Gladys Hollingstead from Pacific Health Center, to conduct a health seminar in Grand Bahama that concluded on Friday, September 15th.

Today at 3:30 p.m. this health seminar will begin at the Hillview Church. On Sunday morning from 9 to 12 noon it will conclude at the New Providence Church.

Dr. Elie Honore, Health Ministries Director of the Inter-American Division and Pastor Milton Gregory will return on September 24th at the New Providence Church to inaugurate officially the Bahamas Adventists Professional Health Association.

GRANT'S TOWN CHURCH SALUTES 10 MEMBERS

Ten members of the Grant's Town Seventh-day Adventist Church were honoured for their contributions to the church during its combined Super Sabbath and 70th anniversary celebrations on Sabbath, September 09.

The honourees were Sister Pearl McMillan, Sister Floy Rollins, Brother Randolph Humes, Sister Arimentha Colebrooke, Pastor S. N. McKinney, Brother Alfred Brennen, Brother Haynes Dorsett, Brother Vincent Sullivan, Brother Cecil Newbold and Sister Madlyn Grace Kelly. They were given plaques, in some instances relatives receiving the awards on their behalf.

It is estimated that more than 1,000 persons - members, former members and friends - attended the events, which began on Friday evening, and continued with all-day services and lunch on Sabbath. Elder Norman Seymour, Acting First Elder and chairman of the Super Sabbath-70th anniversary organizing committee, says this Super Sabbath was the most successful ever.

The present Grant's Town Church is the third sanctuary built on 4,000 sq. Ft. of land on Wellington Street donated by Brother Williams W. Fountain shortly before the 1929 hurricane. The first sanctuary, a wooden building, was completed in 1930 (thus the church's 70th anniversary). Work on the second building, now known as the Annex, began in 1956, and was finished in 1963. Construction of today's sanctuary started in 1971, and was completed the following year.

"Seventy years on. . .and almost home" was the theme of the Super Sabbath/70th anniversary weekend, which began with a Friday evening youth hour when Pastor Jeff K. Thompson, President of the Cayman Islands Mission and a former Grant's Town pastor, preached.

Sabbath's speakers were pastors E. D. Clarke (Grant's Town current pastor), L. V. McMillan, N. E. Scavella, Jeremiah Duncombe, H. A. Roach, L. A. Johnson, and L. B. Wellington. Pastor McMillan, another former Grant's Town pastor, is an evangelist in the Inter-American Division of Adventists, and Pastor Wellington, outgoing President of the West Indies Union of Adventist, is soon to assume the post of a Vice-President in the Inter-American Division.

Likening the final stage of a Christian's journey to an airliner about to touch down or to a mountain climber approaching the peak, some pastors referred to challenges associated with this stage, but emphasized that victory is assured through Christ.
