Adventist Spotlight

Last Sabbath marked an historic moment in our Conference after years of wishing and dreaming about a weekly television program. That is correct--Adventist Spotlight, a sixty-minute locally produced television program, made its debut on Cable Bahamas channel 12 from 11a.m. to noon. Today it continues. These weekly productions will showcase hope, Adventist worship, inspirational music and Adventist historical notes. Featured this week will be Dr. Donald Burden. Historical notes will showcase Dr. Silas McKinney, one of the longest serving native workers in the Bahamas Conference and the first Bahamian president of the Bahamas Mission and Conference.

Your support is needed as we venture in this area of reaching out to our sick and shut-in members, as well as the community at large. To accommodate local members, we are negotiating a repeat showing of each program at a time convenient for all members.

Convention 2002 In Historic San Salvador

The theme of Convention 2002 - "United in Worship of God"-was indeed heralded throughout the island of San Salvador. Scattered among the faithful members were persons from all religious persuasions including the president of the Christian Council, Pastor Walker.

Leading out in the spoken word on Friday evening was our Conference Secretary, Dr. Leonard A. Johnson. He enthusiastically exhorted the worshippers to take example from the lives of Paul and Barnabas as they continue to travel on this Christian journey. At the conclusion of this service, the congregation united in solemn prayer which was offered by the district pastor, Jeremiah Duncombe.

Sabbath school received a special boost because of our energetic Elder Ian Greene. He encouraged the school to continue to develop and maintain a true relationship with Jesus. This spirit-filled service was further enhanced by the study of our lesson, which was conducted by Brothers Gayle and James who were a part of the team from Nassau.

The highlight of this week's event was the divine hour worship service. A warm welcome was delivered by Elder Fernander. Special greetings were shared by Pastor Duncombe and sister Rowena Smith, Children's Ministries Director of the Bahamas Conference -of course our children - 18 in number were not forgotten. They were treated to an exciting story which centered on allowing our faith to grow in Jesus. The children will always remember the object lesson taught in this story by Sister Smith. Following our story were special music by Sister Hepburn and then the proclamation of the word by Dr. Johnson. He reminded us about the seriousness and the importance of prayer in worship to God. He turned our attention to the prayer of Jabez and admonished us to seek God's blessings daily. The divine service was followed by a sumptuous and nutritious fellowship meal.

The A.Y. was very special. The youths participated in a Bible Bowl from the gospel of Mark conducted by Sister Smith. Also the young people displayed their talents in songs.

A very informal, but informative seminar was conducted by Sister Smith with the teachers who minister in the children's department. Praise and thanks were expressed for the valuable information and materials shared with the teachers.

The weekend could not be complete without a message from the Lord by the district pastor - Jeremiah Duncombe. Therefore all roads led to the Cockburn Town Seventh-day Adventist Church on Sunday evening. Infact, many of the community's churches closed their doors and worshipped with us. Under the anointing of the Holy Spirit and after much prayer, a powerful message from the Lord was delivered by Pastor Duncombe. He also encouraged the congregation to seek God's guidance and listen to his voice more than ever before especially as we approach the upcoming general election

Special thanks to Dr. Johnson, Pastor Duncombe, Sisters Joan Duncombe and Rowena Smith, Elders Ian Greene, Farquharson, James and Gayle who assisted with the weekend's Program. Also thanks to the kind and loving members of San Salvador for your gracious hospitality.

 Educators Take a Tour

Berrien Springs/ Battle Creek, Michigan21st -25th February, 2002 A stately group of educators from the Bahamas Seventh-day Adventist Educators Association left these sunny isles to go to the cold and chilly state of Michigan to enjoy a full weekend of activities tailored specifically to meet their needs. They were armed with their heavy jackets, furry hats and of course their gloves to combat the snow and chilly breeze. They were a well-prepared group. In spite of the cold, our welcome was very cordial and warm. It felt as if we were back home in the Bahamas.

This educational trip was one that surpassed the expectations of the group. It will be long remembered for the things seen, the messages heard, the musical thrills and the experience of fellowship.

We started with a grand tour of Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan. The experience was uplifting as we viewed with pride the work that is taking place at this institution. Fascination and awe overwhelmed us as we visited the museum, which brought history and the Bible alive. Our faith in God's written word was further strengthened through the revelation of the various ages of history. Many more hours could have been spent in the museum if time had allowed.

The Sabbath was packed with all the blessings that were expected. It was the highlight of our trip. Pastor Dwight K. Nelson expounded on "The Contagious Adventist: 'Let's Roll". That sermon was received with much thanksgiving and self-reflection. The campus of Andrew's University catered to the needs of everyone through the diversity of Sabbath services that were conducted everywhere you turned. The depth of your soul was exposed as you worshipped. It was divine.

During Sabbath afternoon we left Berrien Springs to visit The Ellen G. White Estate in Battle Creek, Michigan. This was an unforgettable experience as we had a physical as well as a spiritual experience with those founders of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The guide was well prepared to answer the many questions that were asked by these group members, who displayed an insatiable desire to increase their knowledge of the founders of the early church

Our president, Pansy Hamilton Brown had the opportunity to showcase her musical skills on the organ which was in the second church where the decision for the name of the church was made. The group, with other visitors, were inspired to sing as the organ was played. It was an unforgettable experience. We then travelled to the cemetery where the graves of many of the founding members were viewed; the graves included those of Ellen G. White, her husband James and children. We also had a glimpse of The Kelloggs Estate, the tabernacle and the sanitarium, which was once a part of the Adventist heritage.

As the group travelled from Battle Creek to Berrien Springs, they reflected on God's grace and mercy. Their renewed spirit was evidenced as they sang songs of thankfulness, repeated Psalm 27, and communed with God as the Sabbath activities were concluded.

On Sunday, the group recreated themselves by visiting the ABC store and other Department stores. This recreation completely exhausted the group members, but this did not deter them from partaking in fellowship with, Dr. Lenore Brantley, one of the many courteous and friendly persons, they met during the visit. She provided a light supper for the group.

Late Monday evening we returned home safely. We were now better informed, had a renewed assurance, and had become more entrenched in God's word because of this uplifting and informative experience. The lives of Pastor Wilfred Adderley, Ednol Collie, Lydia Brown, Lena Munroe, Zelda Pratt, Pansy Hamilton Brown and Terri Dames , have been enriched because we were partakers of this deep and spiritual experience. We thank God for allowing us to have a safe and enjoyable trip. -Terri R. Dames
