For many, 2011 was a time of fulfillments, achievements, and triumphs. For others it was a year filled with difficulties, trials and misfortunes. Regardless of our experiences, the Apostle Paul tells us that if we accept Jesus as our personal Saviour, all of the events that transpire in our lives are ultimately designed for our benefit. In Romans 8:28 we find these words. "And we know that all that happens to us is working for our good if we love God and are fitting into His plans" (The Living Bible).

Therefore, let us look back on 2011 and use every experience as building blocks with the knowledge that brighter days are ahead of us. That is not to say that 2012 will not present us with new challenges, indeed there will be many. There are still a large number of countries facing economic challenges, many national leaders are uncertain about the future of their citizens and the global crime rate continues to grow. Yet in the midst of massive doubt and uncertainty, the Prophet Jeremiah tells us that God wants us to be a people of hope. Not because we are self-sufficient, but because our heavenly Father has big plans for us.

Jeremiah 29:11 says, "For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope" (The Living Bible).

So, as long as we are in Christ, we have nothing to fear for the future except we forget how the Lord has led us in the past.

As Joshua was about to enter the Promised Land God told the new leader of Israel; "As I was with Moses, so shall I bee with you… So be strong and be very courageous". Today I admonish each of you with the same words; as you embark on this New Year; be strong and of good courage knowing that God will be a present help to grant you the spiritual strength and power to meet every challenge.

Let us also use this time for spiritual renewal, and pledge ourselves to a deeper commitment for service to God and country. Let us serve God and each other with gladness, fulfill our roles as good stewards of that which God blesses us with, and determine within our heats to be our brother's keeper.

Finally, in 2012, let us make a special effort to reach that friend, family member, or neighbor who needs to surrender his/her life to God. The strength of our unity and influence must only be to support those things that will enhance the kingdom of God and by extension return peace and tranquility to our nation. Together we can do our part to make the Bahamas the best little nation on planet earth.

On behalf of my wife Joan, and our children, I wish all of you a spirit-filled, prosperous, and happy New Year. -Pastor Paul Scavella, President, SBC

Convention Time Again!

Convention 2012 goes to the Family Islands on January 6 - 8, 2012! Many have also declared that we have lost our bearing because we dare to use the word, "Christmas".

For me, this time of the year provides a wonderful opportunity to minister to persons in a way that may not have been possible at other times. Similarly, the apostle Paul when visiting the brethren on Mars Hill in Athens (Acts 17: 23) were confronted with a wall filled with pagan gods. He noticed that one of the inscriptions on the wall was to the unknown God. He used the opportunity to point the brethren to God.
Did he condemn them and say you heathens get rid of this God? No, instead he used the occasion to introduce his faith to the saints with their own unknown God. During this season we have hundreds of power point moments to introduce Christ to friends, family and co-workers in a meaningful way.

This became a reality on Sunday past, when a number of members from the Johnson Park Church took time out to treat approximately 30 children from the Black Village community with loving advice, food, and carefully chosen gifts. The apostle Paul reminds us that we must be especially thoughtful to those of the Household of Faith and to those who are true widows and orphans (Galatians 6:10; James 1:27).
As a former Community Services Coordinator, I presented the Samaritan's Purse plan to our conference three years ago. It is a vehicle that provides a path for members to give joyfully to needy persons. You may utilize the title envelope in your giving by writing SP to represent the specific allocation. If you are able, set aside a dollar or two for someone in dire straits.

Logos: December 17, 2011

The Joy Of Service In Ministry

Many people base their whole lives on the principle of self-satisfaction. They do not recognise the presence of God in anything or in anybody. They devote all of their physical energies to the pursuit and the creation of pleasure for themselves. As such, they seek to associate with people and aspects of life that give pleasure. Their relationship with the world around them is based solely on the criterion of what gives them pleasure. As you know, pleasure never lasts; and sadly, with repetition, it degenerates to a pall.

The ending of one pleasure simply signifies the beginning of the quest for the next pleasure. The ego-self can never be satisfied, and is always seeking the ultimate pleasure. So how does one escape this self-perpetuating cycle? Simply by fulfilling your destiny in life, which is to serve all whom you meet.

Unfortunately, some persons rarely experience the joy of service in the ministry of God. They devote their lives to the pursuit of pleasure without knowing what it is to be joyful. They never experience the joy that comes from selfless service to the Creator of all life; the joy that comes when one denies the demands of the ego-self and selflessly gives to the world. Pleasure is different from joy. The source of joy is the spirit whereas the source of pleasure is the ego-self.

Logos: December 10, 2011

Let There Be Peace On Earth

The media releases disappointing news on a daily basis. In years past, the sporadic occurrences of crime marveled society. Today, the community appears armed with expectancy for the next report. Our leaders in government are perplexed by the recent reports that aim at our already tarnished statistics. Indeed, everyone is set to the grit as we grapple with the sullied events that smear our reputation. How did we arrive at this tumult of derision?

I dare to declare with others that it is a direct result of our forsaking or moving away from the principles of godly living. Too many of us are not heeding the Word as justly recorded by the Prophet in 11 Chronicles 7:14. Yes, we were born in sin and shapen in iniquity, but God has prepared a way of escape for all of us. He was tempted in all points, however, He has proven by His life on earth that we can overcome the myriad of temptations hurled at us. A considerable number of crimes in our nation results from unresolved conflicts.

Conflicts are borne from human experiences that are almost unavoidable. This is so because people must interact. God has gifted us with the power of choice and as a result, we vary in our opinions and philosophies on matters of interest or disinterest. As a result of the variances in personalities and the influence of industrial or familial matters on human relations, people become disposed to conflicts. Consequently, conflict is a staple in life. The skills or strategies used to impact a situation will determine to a large extent how the conflict looms or whether an impasse is experienced.

Logos: December 3, 2011

Religious Liberty: A Valuable Tool

What is Religious Liberty? This is one of the most frequently asked questions in our conference. Historically, the Public Affairs & Religious Liberty (PARL) Department has been very much involved with representation to Governments, Parliaments and other stakeholders and assemblies to ensure that religious liberty is acknowledged and respected without infringements upon the freedoms and rights of the individual. As such, religious liberty as a ministry is one of the oldest in the Church and still carries on its vital role for Adventists and believers of other faiths.

Yet much more needs to be done at the local rather than the national level. The promotion of religious liberty in the local church is an essential exercise. Without it, no church could freely convene to worship God in spirit and in truth and in the very beauty of holiness. Indeed, believers in any number of places around the world would covet the freedom of religion and rights of association that many take for granted in the context of the Bahamas. Fact is, restriction or prejudice of any kind can hinder the spread of the gospel, and, in such cases would need to be challenged.

Surely, religious liberty has never come easily, and history reveals that a lot of blood and tears were shed in achieving the comfort and ease with which we have come to live out our life and faith. Many of our seniors can recall some of the challenges encountered in the church’s early days in the Bahamas when members had commit themselves to the teachings of scripture as proclaimed by the church amid great opposition. Thankfully, despite all of this the Seventh-day Adventist church in the Bahamas has flourished.

Logos: November 26, 2011

Children Shining For Jesus Through Talents

Recent history has birthed new philosophies in education. Professionals in the academic arena are now purporting that all children are smart, but in different ways. God has been instructing His people for centuries, telling us that we have different abilities.

In this article, the words talents and gifts will be used interchangeably. A talent or gift is something that one does very well. Let me hasten to say, "God endows us with gifts." No individual is good at everything. Gifts come from within and may be developed through encouragement or practice. Hence, some talents are discovered at an early age while others develop their talents as they mature.

The parable of the ‘Talents’ emphasizes the importance of being good stewards for Christ … using what He has blessed us with. A certain man was travelling to a far country and called his servants to him and gave each servant a certain amount of goods. To one, he gave five talents, to another two talents, and to a third, one talent.

He that had received five talents went and gained five more talents. The nation is called to transform The Bahamas with friendship. The National Friendship Committee, chaired by Barrington Brennen, realizes that the diminution of friendliness and acts of kindness over the years have negatively impacted the social fabric of our nation. Since it is true that “friendship is the best medicine,” the National Friendship Committee is calling all residents of The Bahamas to foster a spirit of friendliness on every island, every neighborhood, residence, institution, and business. Let everyone “be a friend, and make a friend.” The Committee is calling on all residents to make an effort to develop a circle of friendship in their neighborhoods. Residents can do this by getting acquainted and showing acts of kindness to three neighbors on the left and right sides of their homes and three neighbors in front of their homes.

Friendship week is the time for everyone to make a friend and be a friend. Everyone, from Abaco to Inagua, is encouraged to do something special during friendship week. Mend broken friendships. Make new acquaintances. Reach out to someone in need. Get to know your neighbors just around your home. Show respect, honor, kindness and tolerance to everyone regardless of race, nationality, language, religion, political affiliation, age, gender, sexual orientation, or disability.

The National Friendship Committee is calling on everyone to make a difference in our country by letting friendship start with you.

To promote and foster an on-going spirit of friendship, the National Friendship Committee presents a Friendship Pledge.

Logos: November 12, 2011

The Formation & Celebration Of The Pastor In This Era

At the ascension of our Lord, Jesus Christ, a plethora of gifts were given to the church through the Holy Spirit for the work of the ministry and the perfecting of the saints, so that Christ’s body may be built up (Ephesians 4:12). To some extent, we are all on the receiving end of the gifts bestowed on the church for the expansion of God’s grace in the earth. The pastoral office, occupied by the pastor, helped by elders and other lay leaders, constitutes a critical gift for the unfolding of God’s purpose through His people.

At some point before entering the ministry all pastors sense the unceasing tug of the Holy Ghost upon their lives, they have been called. This requires any effective pastor to have a heightened awareness of being called by the One who alone is immortal, invisible and all wise. In recognizing the call of God in their pastor, congregations for the most part put pastors up on pedestals, holding them out as paragons of virtue in highest esteem. Doubtless, this is because the pastor is the one most likely to lead them into a meaningful relationship with Christ.

However, pastors, with all the lofty attributes we impute to them, are also defective, fallen human beings with feet of clay like the rest of the household of faith. The call to ministry, like the Incarnation, involves a mysterious mixture of word and flesh. While most pastors probably can't tell stories of being blinded by heavenly light or touched by live coals from God's throne, they take comfort in the fact that they have something in common with Paul and Isaiah. Their decision to enter the ministry wasn't simply a pragmatic outcome of a vocational test. It was a response to God's call. Yet, the call produces pastors cut from any number of different cloths.

Logos: November 5, 2011

Slow Down, It’s Prayer Time!

Every year during the fall season, the Seventh-day Adventist church around the world pauses to pray in a united fashion. This spiritual emphasis is called, WEEK OF PRAYER. Under the theme, “GOD’S SAVING GRACE”, the church will engage in steadfast prayer on November 5 - 12, 2011. This theme defines the very heart of the Seventh-day Adventist church.

In the week of prayer readings, we will continue to study how the grace of God is being mediated to believers through Jesus Christ in the heavenly sanctuary. The messages will drive us to our knees, because without grace, we would not have the ability to pray.

This is a marvelous truth to consider: How God, through Jesus Christ, has purchased our redemption with His own blood! The fact that God has dealt with our biggest problem (i.e. SIN), gives every believer the assurance that He cares for us. He gave His Son as a ransom for all. The songwriter aptly advises us to have a little talk with Jesus - the One who knows all about our trials, hears and answers prayer.

Many times we forge ahead without taking our issues to the God of all grace. We forget that prayer, a conversation with God, is an indispensable spiritual discipline. Who, having received grace, would not respond to God in prayer? Those who constantly react to the discouraging events of life need to learn how to have a conversation with God that is based on His promises. Believers who pray never become reactionaries. As a conference, we claim the power of God to fertilize every heart that comes under the anointing of His Word. As such, we can glory in His name for the baptisms we have experienced in our conference.

The year began under the caption "Revival and Reformation". The first prong of this initiative, Constant in Prayer, pulled us to our knees as we supported other fields in our union and division in presenting to God and praising Him for our challenges and accomplishments. Certainly, in times like these God's saints need a prayer chain. May I invite each member of the South Bahamas Conference to place before God's throne the many new believers who have come into the church. They need the love and care of seasoned saints. Permit me to offer some practical suggestions on how you can nurture them:

- Invite members to your home for lunch on Sabbath or on any other day.
- Make a telephone call during the week to express your interest/concern.
- Offer to become a prayer partner.

As the work of God expands, the capital projects increase. I therefore implore you to place the various projects before the Lord in prayer; one of which, is Bahamas Academy. Yes, we are faced with the challenge of completing our new school. Other projects are going on simultaneously, and so we seek to satisfy the other obligations in capital development.

Logos: October 29, 2011

Food Security & Healthy Environment

From the very beginning, God gave man the herbs of the field with seeds. This was a guarantee for food security through the tilling of the soil. Yes, after sin, the ground was not as easy as before sin. God said, " by the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread"(cf. Genesis 1:29; 2:9). So it has been since the fall of man; he has to exert sweat in order to eat. All through the ages God has blessed the earth. In fact, the faithful tiller of the soil is miraculously blessed with luscious, sweet and succulent organic produce that is better than the chemically or mechanically grown ones.

Many years ago, our fore-parents were sustained by the farm produce they grew. They were strong and fit. Many lived to be octogenarians and nonagenarians. Some of them are still living today and can remember the simple, but happy life they enjoyed on some of our family islands. Their homes were simple, the air was fresh, and the atmosphere was void of noise pollution. Crime was almost non-existent. Today, a new generation may view tilling of the soil as drudgery or as something handed down from the time of slavery. This false concept of farming has turned away many of us from the idea of growing our own food. As a result, we have positioned ourselves for disaster as we look toward the final moments of earth's history. Many of us are not interested in growing the food we cannot live without.

As God's people, we would do well to reflect on the story of Joseph in Egypt. God, through his providence, sent Joseph to Egypt in order to preserve His people. Let us review what happened in Egypt and see if we can draw some lessons to help us as we come closer to the final moments of earth's history. Food security was of great importance in Egypt. Joseph oversaw the storing of grain during the seven years of plenty. Obviously, the Egyptians themselves were not prepared because the record shows that they had to buy grain from Joseph (cf. Gen 47:13-26). When they had used up all their money, they sold their flocks and land and gave up their freedom to be servants of Pharaoh in order to get food. The record shows that Joseph bought all the land for Pharaoh, moved the people into the cities, and afterwards he gave them seeds to plant. For the rest of their lives they had to cultivate the land and give Pharaoh a tax of a fifth of everything they grew. They became servants in their own land. They sold their birthright for food because they were unprepared!

Logos: October 15, 2011

Ingathering Time: An Opportunity To Share Christ

These questions are often asked, “What is the church doing to address the various social ills in our country?” “What is the church doing to assist the many persons in our communities who are burdened with challenges?” While it is not published on a daily basis, ministries of the church such as Adventist Community Services, Education, Youth, and ADRA are touching many lives each day.

On Sabbath October 22, our annual Ingathering Program will be launched. According to the historical account, in 1903, Jasper Wayne, a Seventh-day Adventist nurseryman ordered 50 copies of the magazine, “Signs of the Times” which was devoted to the issue of capital and labour. As he opened the parcel in the post office and gave out the copies, he mentioned that any monies the recipients cared to give would be used for the mission of the church. Within one hour his supplies were depleted and in return received four dollars ($4.00) to be used for the work of the gospel. Out of this experience, the Ingathering Program was developed.

Ingathering campaigns soon became standard in all countries where Seventh-day Adventist churches were organized.
It should be noted that ingathering is not begging as some have expressed. Rather, it provides the church with two key opportunities. Firstly, it provides for each member the unique opportunity to share Christ with the public and to shed light on what the church is doing to uplift the human condition. Secondly, it affords each member the privilege to invite friends, neighbours, and family members to partner with the church in providing financial support to carry out the mission that Christ assigned to His church. Psalms 24:1 reminds us that the earth belongs to God. He has placed His goods in the hands of all.
As we go “Ingathering”, I want to encourage the church to view ingathering in the overall context of sharing Christ with those whom we are closest to. Further, I wish to commend the following churches for reaching their goals during last campaign, Adelaide, Gambier, Grant’s Town, Landrail Point, Lowe Sound, New Englerston, Parkgate, Redemption, and Stevens. Below is a list of the goals for the upcoming campaign. As we go out, let us remember, we are sharing the love of Christ and extending the invitation for others to experience His love.

Logos: October 8, 2011

Back To Basics

Our nation, over the past few days, was wrenched in emotional pain as we all hoped beyond hope that eleven year-old Marco Archer would be found alive. Somewhere in the corner of one's mind the questions lurked, "What if he is not safe?" "What if he has been fatally injured?" Later, the heart jerking news came that the body of a young boy was discovered.

The more profound question is, "What could cause a human being to commit such an evil act?" We have had similar incidents played out in our country before, but we cannot become immune to these acts of violence and develop a cavalier attitude to these heinous crimes that so easily rob us of our sense of civility, security and pride.

What do we do?

We must aggressively petition our Saviour as the evil force seeks to rob our country of the peace and camaraderie that we once enjoyed. Taking the quotation, "I am my brother's keeper" seriously, will engender a spirit of brotherly love as we collaborate our efforts to steer every child from the wrong path. Children will eventually become adults, who if not rightly trained, become a menace to society. We must make the concerted effort to discipline every child in our reach. Discipline does not ridicule, injury or demean. Discipline redeems and instructs. Demographics to a large degree impact culture and trends. This I will leave to the statisticians because there may be underlying arguments on how the social woes have contributed to our present condition.

Notwithstanding, we must do our part. We cannot simply rehearse the obstacles then resort to paralysis. We must pool our resources and become active agents of rehabilitation in our Bahamaland.

I chronicles 14, 7 tells us that righteousness exalts a nation. We must humble ourselves and pray, then God will heal our land. Do we still trust God's word? Or is it an irrelevant piece of literature? Full compliance to all of God's word is where it has to begin.

Wherewith shall a young man cleanse his way? The answer comes, "By giving heed to God's word"(cf. Ps. 119:9).

Logos: October 1, 2011

Women’s Ministries Convention: Heeding The Call

The Inter-American Division (IAD) and Atlantic Caribbean Union Mission (ACUM) Women's Ministries Directors (WMD) visited the Cayman Islands Conference for a special Women's Convention, held September 16 -18, 2011. We are told by Ellen White that the work of education and the work of redemption are one. Having accepted this, shouldn't we seek to ensure that there is a balance among the home, the church, and the school?

Sometimes it may do us well to take a step back and ask ourselves the question, "If I were sure that Jesus would return before my child reaches adulthood, what would I do differently?" If they are to live with Him eternally, shouldn't they begin as soon as possible to learn how to live with Him now? And who better to give them this training than the school which endorses and enforces all that their home and church teach?
Our channel of Adventist education is Bahamas Academy, God's school. We are told that children are a heritage of the Lord, one for which He paid dearly. Let us seek to do all that is required of us to ensure that our children are in a position to receive the best education possible. They will be going out to live and compete in a world that has become a global village. Therefore, they must be taught to think globally. The world is not fair but they must be taught to act responsibly. The world is interested in the here and now, but our children must remember that eternity is at stake, so it is imperative that honesty and integrity run through the fabric of their being.

As we position ourselves to meet the regional and global challenges of education, we are mindful of our spiritual obligation to train candidates for heaven. We ask that you allow us to partner with you as you continue to introduce your children to the One who has set His ideals higher than the highest human thought can reach.

Logos: August 13, 2011

Family Togetherness

The old adage "The family that prays together stays together" is still true today. In 1942, when these words were first coined by Al Scalpone, a professional commercial writer, he never thought that it would have such a profound impact on families.

As the divorce rate escalates pass the 50% threshold, prayer certainly is the glue that holds families together in these turbulent and troublesome times. Without prayer, we would give up and call it quits.

Tradition, ritual, routine, and structure are terms often used to refer to an activity that brings a family together. In my humble opinion, for an activity to be referred to as a family tradition, ritual, routine, or structure, it must: 1) bring the family members together; 2) Create positive memories and provide encouragement and stability; and 3) leave a cherished heritage to pass along.

Someone once said that in order to create genuine togetherness, you must spend: 1) 30 minutes sharing each evening; 2) one whole evening sharing per week; 3) one whole day per month sharing; and 4) one whole weekend per quarter sharing.

One of the greatest and best traditions for fostering togetherness is mealtime. Nancy Gibbs in an article found in Time Magazine dated June 12, 2006 states "the more often we eat together, the less likely kids are to smoke, drink, do drugs, get depressed, develop eating disorders and consider suicide, and the more likely they are to do well in school, delay having sex, eat their vegetables, use big words and know what fork to use." This should not surprise us because Ellen White in the Health Reformer (1874) said "when the family gathers alone around breakfast or dinner table, the same courtesy should prevail as if guests were present…let the conversation be genial and suited to the little folks as far as possible. Interesting incidents of the day's experience may be mentioned at the evening meal, thus arousing the social element. If resources fail, sometimes little bits read aloud from the morning or evening paper will kindle the conversation."

Logos: August 6, 3011

Children and the Church

Amidst a world of turmoil, trials and tribulations, our children can still be properly trained in the way they should go. While we are truly delighted that a member of the Adventist church owns and operates a radio station that teaches the gospel and our distinctive messages, we are a bit perturbed and dissatisfied about the manner in which the local programs consistently defame the church, criticize individuals, and stress personal views as though they are those of Scripture and or of the Adventist Church. This is not the method of Christ.

Both present and past administrators have spoken to Brother Miller of 102.3 FM about our concerns, informing him that the church has approved channels for airing grievances, and asking that such criticisms and personal views and attacks come to an end. Also, the administrators requested that he develop and maintain a harmonious working relationship with the church. The conference officers counseled him on matters of church leadership, teachings, the approach and relationship of BBN to the organized work and his attitude to the Church that he loves. Therefore, the South Bahamas Conference finds it difficult to support the radio station as long as it maintains a counterproductive approach in relating to the Adventist Church.

Logos: July 23, 2011

You Are The Master of Your Microphone (Part 2)

Most if not all persons who participate in church worship services have had an occasion to use a microphone. This has to do with the path or pattern that the microphone receives sound. Manufacturers design their microphones with this in mind. In choosing your microphone you have to decide what characteristics you want.
Do you want a microphone that picks up sound directly in front of it? Let us face it, though we sometimes drift, (to the detriment of our identity) this is a beautiful country. Many attempts have been made to obscure its beauty through violence, crime and conflicts that often result in deaths. The call for civility is placed on every citizen, visitor and resident of this country to heed the Word of God.

How does the country realize its full potential firstly in the context of God's creation and secondly in taking pride in this gift, our Bahama Land?
One of my favorite authors, Arlene Taylor in her book, The Mind Has a Bent not a Dent, suggests that in order to adjust the thinking of individuals in a positive direction, man has to move his thinking from the base of the brain to the frontal lobe of this wonderful organ created by God. Think of the brain in three parts and compare it to a balled fist with the wrist as level one, the palm as level two and the balled fist as the head which represents thinking - the rational area of the brain. Dr. Taylor argues that in order to effect change in the human arena one has to move his/her thinking processes from the wrist to the fist. She calls it "up-shifting". Our country needs an up-shift. How is this possible? The South Bahamas Conference leads in actual baptisms with a total of 494 souls which represents 58% of their year's goal. They are followed by the Cayman Islands Conference who realized 67% of their goal and are rejoicing with the 201 people baptized so far. One hundred and twenty-three baptisms was the praise report coming from The North Bahamas Conference, having reached 65% of their goal, while the Turks and Caicos Islands Mission achieved 61% of their goal with 79 baptisms. Glory be to God for these precious souls!

Each field has put into effect conservation and consolidation plans, seeking to retain and nurture these brothers and sisters. It must be noted that the Constant in Prayer initiative has served to enhance each field's outreach program. Shortly, the union will share plans for the next Revival and Reformation phase known as "Attentive to God's Word" that will be launched in El Salvador, Central America on July 23, 2011.

Incorporation
Another cause for praise is the recent incorporation providing the legal authority to operate and function as a union. It was heartwarming to listen to the praises and commendations given by our civic leaders for the church and various church leaders who have served over the years. While the accolades are gratifying, they are equally sobering for us as a church as we try to live up to the high expectations of many in the Bahamas. My prayer and that of my colleagues is that we be found faithful to the values and beliefs of God, ever mindful of the sterling example bequeathed to us by our predecessors. As a result of this incorporation, the union now functions as the legal entity of the church in the Bahamas, representing the interests of its fields and the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Bahamas.

Stewardship is Lordship

One of the definitions of Stewardship that I have come to love is this. Stewardship is the lifestyle of one who has a living relationship with Jesus Christ, accepts His Lordship and walks in partnership with God, and acts as His agent to manage His affairs on earth. You may wonder what has motivated this focus. The truth is, while we have made great strides in sharing the three angels’ messages, in recent times our efforts have been given, in most cases, to the exclusion of the publishing ministry. Is this what God desired when this sacred work was pioneered in the 1850’s? Certainly not! In fact, only if we were to uncover the counsel of Ellen White could we really appreciate why this ministry is of such great value and why we should be deliberate in its utilization today. She shares the following: “...Seventh-day Adventists have been chosen by God as a peculiar people, separate from the world... He has made them His representatives and has called them to be ambassadors for Him in the last work of salvation... and in the accomplishment of this work our publishing houses are among the most effective agencies” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 7 138, 139).

Mexico Camporee: "Conquering Giants"

On Sunday, April 17, after months of rigorous preparation, the South Bahamas Conference (SBC) Youth Department took a delegation of 57 pathfinders, masterguides, adventurers and guests to Ciudad Deportiva City, Mexico. Once it was agreed to choose a name, it was important that the name reflect “the true features of our faith in front,” and hence, “Seventh-day Adventist” was selected (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 1, p. 224). Right away, one sees two distinct doctrines coming out, namely, the seventh-day Sabbath and the second coming. However, upon closer reflection, one is likely to see more such as the creation of a 7-day weekly cycle and above all, creation’s God. Who is its author or originator? When did the publishing ministry begin? The publishing ministry was designed by God as a medium of evangelism and nurture for His church on earth. It is a proclamation of the gospel through the written word. The printed pages can go where possibly no pastor, Bible worker, or literature evangelist can go. The printed pages can go directly into the homes of individuals who will not come to our tent meetings or churches. There are basic things needed for the publishing ministry to accomplish its mission. These are: (1) Message; (2) Writer or Author; (3) Materials upon which to write; (4) Printing Press; (5) Messenger; and (6) Customer.

How and when did the ministry of publishing begin? The Holy Scripture tells us the following: "And when He [God] had made an end of speaking with him on Mount Sinai, He gave Moses two tables of the Testimony [the Ten Commandments], tablets of stone, written with the finger of God" (Exodus 31:18).

This text shows us that at Mount Sinai, God used two methods in proclaiming His eternal law, His love, and the plan of salvation. Unfortunately, not all of them are aware of the church's election process. Accordingly, this article provides some information regarding the process.

What Is A Conference Session?
The term conference session refers to the coming together of all churches within the Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists to review the church's work over the past 4 years and to choose officers, directors, and persons to comprise the executive committee of the Conference. Just what do you put in your child's lunch box? You want him to grow healthy and develop good eating habits. This is the time to prevent and or manage potential overweight problems in your child. If you do not, you will regret it later, and he will blame you for it. Remember, you are in charge!

Prevention is better than cure. If your child develops good eating habits in childhood, he will be well on his way to becoming a healthy adult and will probably thank you later. The best way to teach healthy eating habits is by example. If mom is constantly nibbling on some high fat, high calorie fast food, the child will learn to do the same. If mom enjoys eating carrots and broccoli, the child in most cases will like them too. You and your habit are the key to healthy eating in your child.

Children should be taught to have consistent meal times and not be allowed to eat every time they see some food. Young babes need to be fed on demand, but as they grow older, they need scheduled feeding times. Pre-schoolers may need to eat up to four scheduled meals a day, especially if they are finicky eaters. However, most children over the age of seven do well on three balanced meals a day with only a snack of fruit if needed.

A Praise Report From Bahamas Academy

The 2009 - 2010 school year is history, and the results from the B.J.C. and B.G.C.S.E external exams are in. A prolific writer, Ellen G. White refers to evangelism as “the life blood of the church”. The imagery used suggests an innate connection to daily living and commitment to Christ. Each believer is called to herald God’s message to a world in chaos and despair. Evangelism places the church in a position of expansion and great possibilities for God’s people. Even in our own nation, as we look about us, the fields are white and ready for harvest (John 4:35).

Pentecost & More...

Joining us this weekend for Pentecost and More is Pastor James Daniel, General Field Secretary and Associate Stewardship Director of the Inter-American Division. Ps. 145:18 (NKJV)

“Now, where did I put that remote control,” I grumbled, as my eyes swept the room to catch a glimpse of that small grey and white rectangle. “I always keep it right here on the table; so, where could it be now?” Thinking that maybe it had fallen behind the table, I searched behind it, under it and around it. Shivering a little, I looked round again. The room felt cold and I wanted to change the setting on my air conditioning unit.
