The Triangle of Christian Education

Seventh-day Adventists believe that the home, church and school must work together to provide the best education for our children. This three-fold support for Christian education is important because, according to Ellen White, "In the highest sense the work of education and the work of redemption are one" (Education, p. 30). So, as in redemption, the objective of Christian education is to restore the image of God in the student.

The Best Education  In order to give the children the best education possible, the three institutions - home, church and school - must work closely together. Here is what Ellen White said:

"The best education that can be given to children and youth is that which bears the closest relation to the future, immortal life. This kind of education should be given by godly parents, by devoted teachers, and by the church, to the end that the youth in turn may become zealous missionaries for either home or foreign fields. They are to be earnestly instructed in the truths in the Bible, that they may become pillars in the church, champions for truth, rooted and grounded in the faith. They are to know whereof they believe, and to have such an experience in divine things that they will never become betrayers of sacred trusts" (Fundamentals of Christian Education, p. 231).

Importance of Home Training  Since the home is the child's first school, parents have a great responsibility in giving their children the basics upon which the church and the school can build. There is no doubt that what is done in the home is very important in determining the direction of the child's life. Notice how this is expressed by Ellen White:

"I inquired if this tide of woe could not be prevented, and something be done to save the youth of this generation from the ruin which threatens them. I was shown that one great cause of the existing deplorable state of things is that parents do not feel under obligation to bring up their children to conform to physical law." As a result of this neglect, children "become selfish, exacting, disobedient, unthankful, and unholy. Mothers who are doing this work will reap with bitterness the fruit of the seed they have sown. They have sinned against heaven and against their children, and God will hold them accountable" ( pp. 25-26).

Parents, yours is a solemn task to give your children a solid foundation upon which the church and the school can build. If in the home children are taught to love and obey God, respect themselves, and show respect for others, they will more likely succeed  at school.-Dr. John Carey

Profile of Dr. Robert Cruise        Dr. Robert J. Cruise graduated from the University of Alabama with a Ph.D. in Research and Statistical Methodology.  Immediately after graduation, he accepted a position at Andrews University in the doctoral program of education.  From this vantage point, he taught and guided many of the current educational leaders of the church. Many of those you know, he probably has taught and guided through the dissertation process.

After teaching there for 15 years, he accepted a call from the School of Medicine at Loma Linda University to come and head up the department of biostatistics.  For another 10 years he taught physicians, dentists, nurses and public health students, guiding them through the rough waters of statistical analysis.  Then the General Conference asked him to go to Asia to teach in the graduate program that the church has established in the Philippines.  That school, Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies, which many call the Andrews University of Asia, was his home for three years.  He traveled and taught in most of the Asian countries, once again spreading his skills at making statistics and research enjoyable and appreciated.

Today, after returning to the states, he accepted a position at La Sierra University as Director of research.  His latest endeavor is what brings him to the Bahamas.  He is the research director of the largest educational study that has ever been conducted by the church.  Its purpose is to assess Adventist academics.  That study, called CognitiveGenesis, is a three year study to see how our elementary and secondary students in NAD are doing compared to the national norms.

It also aims to find out what we are doing well and in what areas we could improve.   The study has just finished the second year, and Dr. Cruise will share with us today, at the Hillview Church, the results thus far in this landmark study in the Adventist educational system.

A Perfect Marriage is Possible  By Barrington Brennen

A perfect marriage is one in which both married partners realize and admit their imperfections and find ways of reducing them one by one thus creating a synergy of marital forces that only brings harmony.

Similarly, a perfect marriage on this earth is the harmonious blending of two sinful human beings struggling with imperfect thoughts and actions. It is this struggle that refines and molds us, building character of integrity. Hence, a perfect marriage is not the lack of imperfections, but the presence of a repentant, humble spirit.

  • A perfect marriage is not free from pain, but free of misery.

  • A perfect marriage is not absence from anger, but absence from resentment.

  • A perfect marriage is not free from disagreements, but free from discord.

  • A perfect marriage is not absence of challenges, but absence of confusion.

  • A perfect marriage is not free from diminishing romance, but free from an apathetic spirit.
