Finally! We
have Started!
If you are a curious person, then the above caption would have gotten your
attention. I can actually hear you say, "What has started other than hot days
and Sabbath school?" Well, wonder no more. On Tuesday of this week, April 26,
2005, the foundation for the new Bahamas Academy Secondary division was
excavated thus signaling the end of speculations as to when…. Thanks to Gwen
and Thomas Hanna and the fine staff of United Backhoe and Equipment, who once
again came to the aid of Bahamas Academy by providing the heavy equipment for
the excavation.
What does this mean? Bahamas Academy's construction moves into full
gear with the objective of completion of phase one in two years. Isn't that a
bit presumptuous, owing to the enormous task ahead of us? Certainly it would
be, if we were to dwell on all the financial concerns (6.2 million for the
seconday division), and other challenges. However, if we took time to consider
the awesomeness and greatness of God, we would discover that "nothing is too
hard for Him." To ensure that we keep our focus on God as we knock on doors,
write businesses and appeal to all, especially alumni of Bahamas Academy, the
fund raising committee met on Tuesday, April 26, to intensify fundraising
efforts in order to finance the project. This committee is headed by Brother
Keith Major and includes Dr. Cheryl Rolle, Dr. Hugh Roach, Orencia Ferril and
others.
Who will construct the school? VBAs, those hard working men and
women of our church who sense a call of God upon their lives and talents, and
who have pledged themselves to be used to His honor and glory, will build the
school. If you doubt this group of volunteers, consider their record which
includes full construction of the Stevens SDA Church in Stevens Long Island,
significant work to the Lowe Sound SDA Church in Lowe Sound, Andros and more
recently, construction of the New Early Learning Center, off Old Trail Road.
Proactively, VBAs and their leadership team of Winston Ash, Cecil Cartwright
Sr., Henry Moncur and Howard Barr and others have been meeting during the past
two weeks in anticipation of this project; and now it is go. Well, you may be
asking, "what can I do, where do I fit in?" You will notice that each church
has been assigned a section of the building. See the same in this week's
Logos. Additionally, your financial contribution and building materials will
go a long way. (Mark BA on your envelope).
Have the pledges stopped? Pledges continue to come in weekly, and
numerous businesses have given. Some of you may have heard that about two
months ago, a non-alumnus who is not a member wrote a check in the amount of
$5000 on the occasion of one visit. That was a clear indication that God will
supply our needs. Need more proof? An alumnus of BA made the commitment to
supply plumbing materials free, and where that is not possible, he will supply
at the basic cost. Isn't God good! Get involved and ensure that we build a new
Bahamas Academy soon.

Adventist Youth Leaders Trained As First Responders Proper preparation
is the key to effective and efficient response to real-life emergency
situations. On April 13th - 15th, 2005 over 30 Individuals from the community
were trained to react to emergency situations at a Community Emergency
Response Team (CERT) Seminar sponsored by The National Emergency Management
Agency (NEMA) in conjunction with the US Embassy . CERT is a positive and
realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens are
trained to safely provide assistance to the injured.
The training programme focused on dealing with hazardous material,
terrorist attacks, fire, hurricanes and storms. Volunteers learned how to
rescue an injured person safely should a building collapse or some other type
of emergency arise. It also allowed volunteers to manage utilities, put out
small fires, treat individuals for shock, provide basic medical aid, search
for and rescue victims safely, collect disaster intelligence to support first
efforts and to control bleeding.
On Friday (April 15th) an emergency simulation was carried out in Gambier
Village where the CERT Volunteers got a chance to search and rescue real
victims from bushes, burning buildings, administer medical aid and control
bleeding. Although there were only a few fatalities, it didn't phase any of
the volunteers because we were taught to save the greatest number of persons
in the shortest time, so we just tagged them "BLACK" and moved on to the next
victim. Thanks to the Cadets in training who acted as our guinea pigs and all
turned out to be great patients.
At the end of the course, volunteers were presented with certificates and
CERT kit backpacks which contained first aid kits, flashlights, glasses,
masks, scissors and other emergency items.
The Youth Leaders that took the course were Marilyn Bonamy - Pathfinder
Director - Breath of Life; Neko Davis - Pathfinder co-ordinator Eastern
Region; Marguerite Williams - Asst. A.Y. Leader - Centreville, and Sherry
Burrows - Adventurer Coordinator - Eastern Region. -Sherry Burrows, Youth
Leader
