Health Ministries Fun Run/Walk a Success
The second annual Health Ministries Department 10K/6 mile Fun run/Walk was a great success with almost 200 participants. On Easter Monday, scores of persons met at the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium to get this event under way. Pastor Paul Scavella and other team members were interviewed on Bahamas @Sunrise, which was being taped live at the Sports Centre. The purpose of the event was to encourage exercise and healthy living according to God’s ideals. Once again the theme was Be Healthy, Be Happy, Be Hopeful. Health Education materials were distributed and screening for glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure was conducted.  See Phots

At 7 a.m. sharp, under threat of rain, the race was on as walkers and runners took to the road. The walkers left the stadium heading north on to Thompson Boulevard to Poinciana Drive to Blue Hill Road on to Meeting Street to Nassau Street and back on to Thompson Boulevard finishing at the Stadium. The runners had a slightly different route, leaving the Stadium heading on to Thomson Boulevard to Dolphin drive to West Bay Street to Nassau Street back on to Thompson Boulevard again finishing at the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium. Within 40 minutes the winner, Mr. Dentry Brown, came into the stadium while spectators and cameras waited with great anticipation and excitement. Numerous persons received trophies for their participation and a job well done.

Little Navorii Turnquest and Kishana Brown were the youngest walkers and runners in the 1 to 5 category. Superintendent Banister and Sis. Betty Culmer won the 60+ category with impressive times. All the participants are winners and the greatest benefit we received was the health benefits to our bodies. We are encouraged to continue walking and running to get ready for 2003.

The Health Ministries Department says special thanks to Dr. Joseph Evans and the Adventists Health Professionals Association, Sister Joan Duncombe, Bro. Phillip Humes and Ms. June Flowers for their tireless efforts and commitment to making this event a resounding success. Continued on p. 2 -Monique Mitchell, Health Educator

Homecoming 2002-Cat Island Advancement Society  Surely the presence of the Lord was felt in beautiful Cat Island when members of the Cat Islanders SDA Advancement Society, visitors and friends celebrated the 12th Annual Homecoming and 3rd Anniversary of the dedication of the Seaview Church under the theme "United in Worship of God."

Friday evening Vespers was a glorious occasion as the first church service for the weekend was held at the Devil’s Point Church, where Bro. Bert Clarke is the first elder. Pastor L. A. Johnson, Executive Secretary of the Bahamas Conference, directed our hearts heavenward during the Vespers time as he spoke on the topic "A Cure for Discouragement." Recalling the experience of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, the brethren were encouraged to open their hearts and minds so that they could recognize Jesus in their midst.

On Sabbath all roads led to the Seaview Church. Many visitors from throughout the island were in attendance. The Sabbath Celebration was heavenly. It began with a lively and joyous song service. The Sabbath School hour took the format of a radio talk show from "Radio Station Seaview" located on top of the hill, Wilson Bay, Cat Island, and was hosted by Sis. Vashti Brown and Sis. Martha Rolle.

During the divine hour Pastor Roger Moncur preached a dynamic sermon, "The Power of Healing Hope" which gave a fresh perspective and new meaning to the story of the cleansed leper. The sermon underscored the power and might of God to remedy and change whatever challenging circumstances we may find ourselves in, no matter how dismal or hopeless they appear.

The Unity and fellowship continued into a grand fellowship meal which followed the worship service. After everyone had been served, special attention was focused on the Treasurer of the Society, Bro. Cephas Ward and his wife, Ernestine, who celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary on Sabbath, 30th March. Congratulations, Brother and Sister Ward. We wish you God’s blessings!

Special thanks to Brother and Sister Allan Cleare for their continued support, dedication and hospitality which contributed to the success and blessed experience of Homecoming 2002. Recognition must also be given to the hard working officers of the Cat Islanders SDA Advancement Society - Bro. Henry Moncur, Bro. Cephas Ward, Bro. Norman Seymour, Bro. Teddy McDonald, and Sis. Vashti Brown. Also special thanks to all members of the society for their faithful and continued support, especially those who were able to travel and participate in this year’s Homecoming.

We are looking forward to Homecoming 2003 and all Cat islanders are encouraged to start preparing now as we strive to make this annual event a time for encouragement, mission and fellowship in the Cat Island district.-Vashti Brown

News from South Andros  With high expectations and much anticipation, Convention 2002 began. Members from the South Andros District, as well as persons from churches throughout the island, were in attendance.

We were warmly and enthusiastically welcomed by Pastor Owusu Boateng. The highlight was an awesome rendition by our mass crusade choir, led by Ms. Periott, which was followed by a stirring and unforgettable sermon by Pastor Leonard A. Johnson.

To complete the weekend, Pastor L. C. Rolle spoke to us on Friday night and Sabbath morning. Using the graphic illustration of a marathon runner, he expounded on the Word. The blessings bountifully flowed and we were definitely inspired to become United in Worship of God!

"Walking in God’s Light" was our theme for this outstanding and unforgettable trip to Mangrove Cay, Andros. By ministering to the members of the Pilgrim Baptist Church, our lives ere changed and so were theirs.

Sabbath School began with a lively and invigorating song service. This was followed by the introduction to Sabbath School, prayer, and scripture reading in skit form. Mr. Graham led out in a joint lesson review.

For Divine worship we marched into the very youthful and inspiring song, "Walk in the Light." Two young members of our group, Taron McPhee and Eleride Miller, presented two sermonettes. Taron McPhee is a senior in high school and is always active in our church. His sermon was entitled "Walking in God’s Light." His message to us was to read God’s word and apply it to our lives. This would give us strength to leave behind negative things behind such as violence and fornication.

Also this would give us courage to face whatever problems the devil may bestow upon us. Taron’s message encouraged us to continue to walk in God’s light. Eleridge Miller was one of the youngest in the group. His message was entitled "Let His light Shine through you." He told us that we could let God’s light shine through us by witnessing and living for him. Saturday evening we had a head-rocking, hand- clapping, foot-stomping, fantastic time at our singsperation. Members of the community were invited. Stanley Sands moderated this event. The New Macedonia Youth Choir and the Pilgrim Baptist Church Youth choir praised God differently, yet we were equally spectacular. Songs were brought by individuals and small groups as well. The night’s highlight was a closing rendition of the song "Make Us One" by the New Macedonia Youth Choir and the Pilgrim Baptist Church Youth Choir. That night we got together and played volleyball. Our group also engaged in other wholesome activities. No one says that you can’t praise God and have fun in the process.

Members of the South Andros Adventist Churches will continue to work with Pastor King and his members and the community of Mangrove Cay. This trip was inspiring to all of us. We learnt many things and confirmed that young people can walk in God’s light.-Alareece Collie
