Get Rid of Personal Debt, Says Church Leader
In light of a dramatic leap in the number of bankruptcies in the United States, the director of stewardship for the Seventh-day Adventist Church in America has called for a greater awareness of the dangers of personal debt.
Paying off debt isn’t just wise financial advice--it goes to the heart of ethical Christian living, says Pastor Ed Reid. "Debt is probably the largest single frustration for families--living outside their means. It’s high stress. More than 80 percent of people who divorce say money matters was one of the biggest factors in the dissolution of their marriage."
Last year the American Bankruptcy Institute reported nearly 1.5 million non-business filings for bankruptcy--a more than 50 percent increase in the past eight years. "By now that’s 29,000 families declaring bankruptcy each week," says Reid. And the number is growing. The Federal Reserve says that household debt is at a record high relative to disposable income.

"From a biblical perspective if we incur a debt, we are duty-bound before God to pay it back," says Reid. "We can’t just lightly say ‘Sorry I’ve gone bankrupt,’ and write it off."
He points out that two-thirds of Jesus’ parables deal with money: "There are more than 2,000 references in the Bible dealing with money, possessions, and our attitude toward them.
"The Bible says in Proverbs 22 that a good name is chosen rather than great riches," he adds. "The whole point is that our character, our name, our signature, our handshake should mean something to people. Wouldn’t it be awesome for people to know that if you’re an Adventist, you’re going to pay your debts on time and you’re not going to try to cheat people out of what you owe them?
Reid says that principles of financial management need to be taught to young people, giving them a solid foundation that "will be a benefit to them their whole life."  Adventist News Network

Measure The Health of Your Relationship  If you are married, engaged, or courting, then this is for you. More and more of Adventist marriages are ending in divorce or separation within the first five years of marriage. How can you know if this will happen to you? Here’s one way. You can take a scientific inventory designed to measure your relationship strengths and weaknesses. This inventory will provide for you the specific area(s) in which you may be having a problems in your relationship. There is an inventory for each type of relationship. PREPARE is for those courting or engaged and without children. PREPARE MC is for premarital couples with child or children. ENRICH is for marriage couples. ENRICH will not only keep things going, it will give your marriage a new lift. MATE is for couples over the age of 50 getting married, seeking marriage counseling, or going through life transitions such as retirement or making a major move.

The inventory costs each couple $40 to send the inventory to Life Innovations Inc, in Minnesota. A seventeen page computer print-out will return for the certified counselor to use to consult with the couple. In addition the couple will receive a small book to assists them in their growth. To access the opportunity you can call Adventist Counseling Services, and speak to Nassau’s only Certified Prepare/Enrich Counselor, and Marriage and Family Therapist, Barrington Brennen, to make an appointment to take the inventory. Adventist Laity Explore More Ways for Mission Nearly 1,700 Seventh-day Adventist lay people met in Columbus, Ohio, United States, August 7 to 10, to focus on lay mission in the home, workplace, and community.

The 55th annual Adventist-Laymen’s Services and Industries convention brought together nearly 300 exhibitors representing health, education, humanitarian work, publishing, and mission outreach. The event also hosted professional seminars, meetings, worship services, and promoted youth involvement in mission.

"Finding God and finding salvation was never meant to be a difficult matter," said Pastor Jan Paulsen, president of the Adventist world church, to the more than 3,000 gathered during the Sabbath, or Saturday, afternoon program. "Being the church is not a complicated thing, either. It's there to tell people about Jesus Christ," he continued. "We are all together in this. We are, all together, the church. I want to thank you, ASI, for your focus, and strength, your intensity, and commitment to the mission that we share."  Paulsen also commented on the involvement of young people in ASI. "ASI is empowering young people to be fully involved in evangelism," he said.
According to its mission statement, ASI exists to "provide challenge, nurture, and experience in sharing Christ in the marketplace, as well as support for the Global Mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church."

During each convention, ASI members are updated on ASI-sponsored projects around the world, and how their offerings from the previous convention have been used. Sabbath morning Merilee McNeilus reported on an ASI-funded initiative in Myanmar, where in the past year more than 375 projects--including 180 churches and 125 elementary schools--have been completed. "That’s more than a project a day," she said. "This is your ASI offerings at work!"

Funding from last year’s convention also helped purchase 200 home churches in 12 countries of the former Soviet Union. Peter Koolik, a building contractor from Brisbane, Australia, who’s helping to coordinate this project, said that nearly 300 Global Mission pioneers are currently leading out in their own church services in areas where, just one year ago, there were no Adventists.
During the Columbus event, ASI members gave some $2.5 million in a single offering to fund international mission projects.  "It’s fun and inspiring to be a participant in ASI’s ‘can-do-it’ culture," said Ron Christman, ASI’s new secretary-treasurer elect.

ASI activities were broadcast live by Three Angels Broadcasting Network, a lay Adventist satellite television network based in Thompsonville, Illinois. Highlights from the event will also be featured on Adventist Television Network during the soon-coming Adventist NewsLine, a production of Adventist News Network.

ASI was established in 1947 by Adventist health care workers, but expanded in the 1970s to include other business people and professionals.- Adventists News Network
