Emphasize reading. If parents read to their children and the children see and hear their parents reading, the children will develop a positive attitude toward reading. Also, children should be encouraged to read the Bible, wholesome books and magazines regularly. Children who read and discuss what they read with parents and others do well in school. Control the use of TV. It
is important for parents to limit the amount of time their children spend Schedule homework time and other routines. When parents establish and encourage their children to follow a homework schedule and other family routine, the children’s success in school is enhanced. A quiet place with proper lighting should be set aside for study. Also, time for chores, eating meals, and going to bed should be set. Take time to talk to and listen to children. Personal talks with children about Christian values, the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse can make a difference in their success or failure. Of course, you should listen to what your children are saying. Most importantly, set a good example for them to follow. Maintain contact with the school. Don’t wait for the school to ask you to come to discuss a problem. Make periodic checks to see how your children are doing in school. Become familiar with your children’s teachers, principals and counselors. Children whose families check on their progress at school maintain a high standard of performance. Involve your children in community activities. Take your children to church and let them participate in positive social activities in the community. You can also enhance your children’s learning by taking them to concerts and other cultural activities. It has been proven that when parents become involved in their children’s education, the children perform better in school and they achieve greater success in life. So, parents, do your best to help your children succeed this school year. - Editor Youth Camp Meetings Conclude Today Hold up…where have the Seventh-day Adventist Youth gone? Many have asked this question since the beginning of this two-week Youth Camp meeting campaign. They aren't at the usual teen hangouts. The guys are not on the basketball courts; the girls aren't home gabbing on the phone. Well, where are they? Let me tell you where they are. Check Blue Hill Road South at the Holy Spirit-filled Berea Church where hundreds of young people flocked to get their Holy Ghost praise on. Come with me to a special place, a place where we have a little fun as we worship and pray, a place where we can see the love of God radiating from each face, a place where the young and old gather together, regardless of what others say. The first week was fantastic, with the Camp Meeting '03 team presenting the Gospel as you have never seen it before. This second week came in with a bang. If you missed it you truly missed a blessing, from the comical - yet informative - skits, the melodious musical selections, and the Holy Ghost Power-Packed sermons. At times, Pastor Burrows was mashing corns hard, yet it was all good as the messages spurred and inspired us to push up to a higher plateau of Christianity. The messages moved us to be Committed and Connected. If you were there you surely received a blessing and would feel, as I do, that this Camp Meeting was really 'off the chains'. The spirit truly is moving and any young person who needed a battery charging surely got rejuvenatedn. The Spirit moved and people were baptized. Pray that those who made a commitment to Christ will be faithful in their walk, drawing others to Him. The Camp Meeting may be almost over but it is not too late. Join us this morning for an inspiring Sabbath School and Divine Service. Walk, hike a ride, push the keys in your ignition and head over to the Berea Seventh-day Adventist Church for this grand Sabbath finale. This afternoon during the A. Y. period, the concert will be happening. Come get some Jesus, and pump up your blessings. -Natasha Rufin
Religious Liberty All persons enrolled in the National Religious Liberty Association and those interested in becoming a part of the Executive Committee of this Association are asked to meet at 5 p.m. today at the Johnson Park Church. -Dr. M. D. Toote, Director, Religious Liberty ‘Let God Speak’ Reaping Campaign On September 13, 2003, at 7 p.m. the Bahamas Conference of SDA will embark on the largest city-wide crusade under the theme "Let God Speak." Evangelist Guy Nembhard is requesting that all members pray for the upcoming meetings during our Wednesday prayer services and in our daily family and private devotions. Healthful Lunch Ideas About a week from now our children will be back in school, and many parents will be concerned about providing lunches that will keep their children healthy, happy, and strong. We are grateful that Miss Idamae Hanna has agreed to share with parents the following "Healthful Lunch Ideas" that they may use this school year. If your child develops good eating habits in childhood, he will be well on his way to becoming a healthy adult. The best way to teach healthy eating habits is by example. If mom is constantly nibbling on some high fat, high calorie fast food, the child will learn to do the same. If mom enjoys eating carrots, broccoli and cauliflower, the child in most cases will do likewise. You and your habit are the key to healthy eating in your children. Children should be taught to have regular meal times and not be allowed to eat continuously. Young babes need to be fed on demand, but as they grow older they need scheduled feeding times. Pre-schoolers may need to eat up to four scheduled meals a day, especially if they are finicky eaters.however, most children over the age of seven do well on three balanced meals a day. Children over the age of two can begin using low-fat food items. This choice will aid in preventing obesity. When shopping for lunch items for your children, read labels. The popular snack foods are usually high in fat, sugar and salt while low in important nutrients. There are some conveniently packaged lunches at your supermarket that seem to be very popular with the kids. One brand is called lunchables. They include pieces of meat, cheese, crackers and sweets. Check the label. The fat calories in many of these popular lunches are well over 50%, far from what I would call a good choice. Many parents love to buy the sugared up drinks that seem to come in every color imaginable. These drinks for the most part are simply sugar, artificial flavorings and dyes. Most of them have little or no nutrients. Here are some healthy lunch tips for your child: 1. Purchase juice instead of drinks. If finance is a problem, pack only one 8-ounce can of juice and include a refilled bottle of good old water. 2. Try always to include at least one piece of fresh fruit in your child’s lunch box. Sapodillas and sugar apples are good choices
3. A sandwich, be it peanut butter or cold cuts on whole wheat bread is always good as a main part of the meal. Don’t shy away from using cooked foods from the night before. These foods can be kept warm in a good thermos. Young children enjoy eating spaghetti and meatballs at lunchtime. It’s a favorite! 4. Healthy snack foods like low-fat granola, nuts, raisins, carrot sticks or well-liked vegetables, homemade oatmeal cookies and popcorn are some good ideas. We live in a fast-paced world, and have fast foods. However, take some time this school year to ensure that your child is getting the nutrients he/she needs in order to build a healthy immune system and a healthy body. --Idamae Hanna, M.P.H.,R.D.
