Under the
theme, ‘Sold out to Jesus’, the Youth Department of The Bahamas Conference
of Seventh-day Adventists, officially launched its year of activities for
2007 with a Consecration Service at the Grant’s Town Seventh-day Adventist
church. Youth leaders from Adelaide to Philadelphia, Centreville to Breath
of Life gathered in their class A uniforms, sang, prayed and thanked God for
bringing us thus far, asking Him to take us through 2007 fully consecrated
to do service.
Pastor Andrew Burrows, Youth Director of the Bahamas Conference, charged the
leaders to go forth and try new things. He also reminded them that they are
Christians first and then Seventh-day Adventists, and that they should be
grounded in what they believe so that they can assist in the Spiritual,
Physical, Mental and even Social growth of the young people entrusted to
them. Dr. John Carey, in his prayer of consecration, asked for God’s
Guidance to be upon each leader and each church member. Gathered in a circle
of love and unity, those present ended the evening with the singing of "Side
by side we stand."
On
Sabbath many of the churches hosted their Youth Day; and some began the
annual Youth Week of Prayer, whose theme this year is "A heart that
worships: God is the very dwelling place of Christ."
Sunday, at 8:30am, Youth leaders filled Hillview and heard from all of the
Coordinators of each arm of Youth Ministries: Rohan Creighton-Masterguides;
Barry Shane Saunders-Pathfinders; Erika Perpall, Adventist Youth; Dr. Marvin
Smith-Music, Marilyn Bonamy-Adventurers; Curtis Bryan-Sports and Dillette
Miller-Listen Up! All of the messages were basically the same - to continue
to do the work of God, but in these evil times when the devil is trying new
and innovative things to get our youth to crumble, we need to be more
vigilant and more organized, and do some things differently to get our Youth
to where we need them to go and eradicate apostasy. There was dialogue and
many issues facing the youth arm of our church and country were addressed;
and in these new and exciting times in the history of our church, moving
forward Seventh-day Adventist youth will march victoriously and claim their
rightful places now and in the New Earth. Listen Up, with its new leader and
team has bold plans, but with Christ on their side they will conquer. The
Sports department led by Lester Stuart will surpass the glory days of when
this writer was a child, and sweet wholesome Christian camaraderie will be
an added blessing. Pathfinder Promise was presented to the conclave as a
work in progress, and Natasha Ruffin and her team were introduced and
thanked on behalf of the Youth Department for the work they are doing
in educating people in the Bain and Grant's Town area. Another highlight of
the conclave was the presentation of awards to Darrell Taylor -Parkgate, and
Shandera Smith-Philadelphia, for their accountability and reporting efforts
during 2006. All in attendance were admonished to be accountable not to the
Bahamas Conference, but first to God, to their churches and to the youth
they represent.
Youth leaders left the weekend of activities buoyed up and ready to do
battle for the Lord in 2007 and onward. The Youth Department of Bahamas
Conference requests the prayers of all as we continue to serve. Why don’t
you help us in this warfare? Become Sold Out To JESUS, and allow HIM to
FIGHT this battle of Apostasy, Crime, Violence and all other ills that
affect today’s youth. I am giving my talents back to God for His service;
what about you? -Curtis Byran, Associate Youth Director

Cat
Island
On
February 2 - 4, 2007, Pastor Eric D. Clarke, the Executive Secretary of the
Bahamas Conference, traveled to Cat Island with Pastor Leroy Sewell to
introduce him as the new non-resident Adventist pastor for the island. It
was truly an exciting time for Pastor Sewell and his family. He, his wife
and two energetic children enjoyed getting acquainted with the people,
learning about the culture and the beauty of the island. Since it was his
first time on a Family Island in the Bahamas, Pastor Sewell was given an
Island tour. During the visit the Clarke and Sewell families visited Mount
Alvernia, the highest elevation in the Bahamas of more than 210 feet. At
the peek of Mount Alvernia is a medieval monastery hewn from the limestone
cliffs where a monk lived for decades.
It was truly and inspirational weekend. Pastor Sewell also had the
privilege of attending a Baptist service where he had the joy of meeting
most of Cat Island governmental and religious leaders. Cat Island has two
Adventist churches. Seaview, where the Convention was held is located in
Orange Hill, North Cat Island. The other church is located more than 70
miles south in Devil's Point.
