First Prayer
Conference in Bahamas Conference A Success
To see a large movement of persons coming in Christ in
Baptism, there must first be a movement of intercessory prayer in private, and
God will reward openly. This is what Pastor Samuel
Telemaque
told hundreds of Adventists gathered at Hillview to hear him speak at the
first ever conference-wide Prayer Conference. A director of Personal
Ministries and Sabbath School Departments and Prayer Co-ordinator for the
Caribbean Union Conference, Pastor Telemaque was the main speaker for the
weekend. From Friday night (January 28) to Sunday (January 30), hundreds of
Seventh-day Adventists came to the Hillview SDA church as delegates to pray
and to learn how to pray.
Pastor Telemaque explained that the Prayer Conference is a process whereby
persons experience spiritual, emotional, and physical healing through the
convicting power of the Holy Spirit, intercessory prayer, singing and faith in
the divine power. A Prayer Conference, he said, focuses on three levels of
healing: first is spiritual healing, the deepest form of healing, and it is
the major objective
of a Prayer Conference; second is emotional healing which comes out of
spiritual healing; and last is physical healing which begins when a person has
experienced spiritual and emotional healing.
Along with forgiveness, reading God’s word is a vital
aspect of the prayer conference. In reading the word, one must read, then
meditate on what is read and hear what God is saying to the reader in those
verses. Then pray God's word back to Him (boomerang prayer), by including
verses of scripture in the prayer.
Prayer operates in the context of conflict-- a conflict is
between Jesus and Satan, continued Pastor Telemaque. There are two realms --
the physical realm where we live, and the spiritual realm where many are held
captive by Satan and his demons. So a good prayer warrior needs to know who
(Satan) and where (the Spiritual realm) they are fighting. To have deliverance
in the natural realm, the prayer warrior must first conquer in the
supernatural realm, by the word of God. This calls for daily consecration of
oneself to God and diligently reading His word.
Pastor Telemaque identified three dimensions of
intercessory prayer: Bible Study, which allows God to speak to the prayer
warrior; Prayer, which allows the prayer warrior to respond to God; and
Ministry, the payer warrior goes out into the community. In intercessory
prayer, one should use the PART principle - Praise God, Admit sins, Request
need, and Thank God for answering the prayer.
A good prayer warrior uses spiritual authority as the
primary source of power;
for "There can be no effective ministry without spiritual authority," said
Pastor Telemaque. He further said that spiritual authority is developed
through God's Word, spending time with God in intercessory prayer and sharing
the word of God with others.
It was on Sabbath afternoon, at 4 o'clock, that armed with simple
instructions, Adventist troopers marched to war, their task---to pray for
persons they met along the street. This one hour Prayer Walk took them into
areas like Nassau Village, Bozine Town, Grants/Bain Town, Golden Gates, out
East, Joe Farrington Road, and Yellow Elder.
The prayer walkers reported that they received varied responses, but mostly
positive ones. Some residents were prayed for by one group and when they met a
second group of prayer walkers, they asked to be prayed for again.
Early Sunday morning (6 a.m.), Dr. L.A. Johnson led out
with a Bible Study on "What Happens When Leaders Pray." This was followed by
Pastor Jeremiah Duncombe’s presentation on "Promises and Faith." Pastor Samuel
Telemaque wrapped up this session with "Encounter/Response Principle." An
anointing service followed. Pastors moved through the aisles anointing with
oil those who requested. Then the pastors anointed one another.
The conference concluded with a prayer seminar that emphasized the power of
prayer in evangelism. Dr. Johnson challenged the participants to put into
practice the principles they were taught during this awesome prayer
conference. -Linda Major
