Pentecost and More –An Answer To The Right Kind of Praying

Pastor Peter Joseph, Coordinator of Pentecost and More in the Bahamas Conference

There is a right kind of praying and a wrong kind of praying.  Pentecost and More is an answer to the right kind of praying.  Have you ever considered the importance of answer to prayers?  Answers to prayer bring glory to God and great good to humanity.  Hence, God has enormous interest in answering prayers specifically and objectively I Kings 18:37.  When we pray for Pentecost and More, God will answer, by bringing this very specific experience to the people of God.  Such an answer will bring glory to God and great good to the church and the society that it seeks to lead to Christ.

I believe that  prayer continues until the answer comes.  Again, because the answer exalts God and improves the condition of people, God has enormous interest in answering our prayers.  In Luke 24:49, Jesus instructed the disciples not to leave Jerusalem until they experienced the infilling and out pouring of the Holy Spirit.  In Acts, the first and second chapters, the disciples came together for ten days of spiritual renewal and prayer, according to Christ’s instruction.  The answer came as the Spirit poured out upon them.  Even the place that they assembled, shook indicating that the answer had come.  This answer exalted God in Christ and improved the condition of thousands of people in that world.  The disciples did the right kind of praying.

Let me share some elements of the right kind of praying.

All doubts must be cancelled  “But let him ask in faith with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.  For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord.”  James 1:6,7.

All manner of selfishness must be cancelled.  “You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.”  James 4:3

All pride must be cancelled.  “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble…… Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord and He will lift you up.”  James 4:6, 10.

All Fear must be cancelled.  “And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing you will receive.”  Matt. 21:22  “For we who have believed do enter that rest.”  Heb. 4:3.   “For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and love and of a sound mind.”  II Tim. 1:7.

All generalities must be cancelled.  “Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?  Or if he asks for fish will give him a serpent?  If you then being evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him.”  Matt. 7:9-11.

All laziness must be cancelled.  “Ask and it shall be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be open unto you.  For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks find and to him who knocks it will be opened.”  Matt. 7:7,8

All internal and external conflicts in vertical and horizontal relationships must be cancelled.   “If you abide in me and my words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.”  John 15:7.

“When the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.”  Acts 2:1.

Currently in our conference the entire membership is at prayer.  I challenge the membership to de-emphasize diction and language and deepen our experience by engaging in the right kind of praying – unwavering, selfless, fearless, specific, direct, persevering, and united praying.  This elevates God and brings great good to all people. - Pastor Peter Joseph, Ministerial, Sabbath School, and Personal Ministries Director

The year 2008 has been designated “Year of the Adventist Man” by the Family Ministries Department of the Bahamas Conference.  It is a time to promote positive living of Adventist men in The Bahamas Conference.  While men are leading in all the violence and crime in our country;  while there are one hundred times more men in our prison than women;  while there are too many men breaking up marriages through infidelity; we want to promote the happy, spirit-filled, upright Adventist Man in 2008.  Here are a few suggestions how a local church can make “The Year of the Adventist Man” stand out:

1.  Have a wall of fame (bulletin board) in your local church where an Adventist man is featured each week or month.  Life story, photos, etc. can be used.

2.  Utilize the church bulletin each week to highlight the life of an Adventist man in your church.

3.  Include an Adventist man in a church activity/program/event, especially the man who is not often used but is a member in good and regular standing.

4.  Select a member in good and regular standing to be the “Adventist Man of the Day” for each Sabbath Divine Service, or as often  as it can be done.   This man should sit in the front bench and  should simply be the honored guest or patron of the service for that day.  The one chosen should be recognized in the church bulletin.

The Adventist Men coordinator for the Conference, Pastor Paul Scavella, will be guiding the men, in cooperation with Family Ministries, in making 2008 a banner year for the Adventist Man.
