President Johnson Says Thanks on Behalf of
Leadership Team
At the
beginning of this year and a new quadrennium, I think it is appropriate for
us, the newly elected leadership team of Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day
Adventists, to pause to give thanks to God for His enabling power and to
express our gratitude to all of you for your prayerful support, as we seek
to fulfill God’s mandate for His Church. We recognize that we will be
challenged in many ways during the quadrennium, but we also are aware and
believe that God is able to supply everything that we will need to achieve
success. Therefore, we request your continued prayers that we will be
faithful to our commitment to Him and the task He has given us.

Special Thanks
On behalf
of my fellow officers and the rest of the team, I am grateful for this
opportunity to say “Thanks” to all the laypersons and every worker who
contributed to the success
of the Session and Convention 2007. Special
mention must be made of the parking attendants, ushers, choirs, media
workers and all who provided special music. All of you did a commendable
job. I pray that you will maintain this spirit of cooperation during this quadrennium and beyond. – Leonard A. Johnson, president
Dr. Israel Leito Speaks at Convention 2007
Shortly after
7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 5, Convention 2007 started with a rousing song
service and an enthusiastic welcome by the host pastor at the Hillview
Church, Peter Joseph. The responsive crowd of worshippers expressed their
appreciation for the various musical renditions with a spontaneous applause.
In his introductory remarks, the principal speaker for the weekend, Dr.
Israel Leito, president of the Inter-American Division, expressed
appreciation
for the maturity with which the delegates dealt with the
business of the session. He felt that “God’s Church is in good hands in the
Bahamas.” He also commended the leadership for the growth in the conference
during the last four years. He was convinced that the Holy Spirit was
leading in the affairs of the Bahamas Conference.
With
thoughts on the theme, “Words of Hope,” Pastor Leito stimulated the minds of
his listeners. He pointed out that this theme, chosen by the leaders of the
General Conference, was based on John 14:1-3, which builds our hope in the
second coming of Christ. It lifts our sights from what is to what will be.
Because they expressed their belief in the second coming of Jesus, our
brethren in the former Soviet Union got into trouble. However, while the
Soviet Union no longer exists, the brethren are still talking about and are
looking forward to the second coming of Jesus.
Pastor
Leito also explained that the Jews were expelled from Rome because of
conflict between the believing and non-believing Jews over the teaching
about the second coming of Christ. The believing Jews did not allow
opposition to silence them or cause them to abandon their hope in the second
coming of Christ. Similarly, we should not allow any issue to prevent us
from sharing “words of hope” with those around us; for we are one people
with one message, “bringing hope to a dying world.”
On
Sabbath, January 6, Convention 2007 moved to the Eastern Region. While the
children met at the Maranatha Church, the youths and adults gathered in the
Church of God Auditorium, Joe Farrington Road. Folllowing a stimulating
Sabbath School programme by teachers and students of Bahamas Academy and a
brief song service, the Divine Service began.
The newly
elected officers and departmental directors were introduced to the audience.
After our Union president, Pastor Allen, explained the procedures that were
followed during the Session, and the musical selections had been rendered,
the audience was ready for the message from Pastor Leito.
In his
brief discussion of the topic, “There Will Be No More Separation,” Pastor
Leito said that humanity’s greatest problem is separation from God. He
emphasized that it was not God’s plan that this should happen. We were made
to always be enjoying the presence of our Creator. He suggested that man was
the last to be created; so like the child of an elderly man, we were special
to God. We were His joy and pride. But sin separated us from God, and Jesus
had to die to restore our relationship with the Father. Soon Jesus will
return to bridge the gap. And there will be no more separation. -Editor
First Workers’ Meeting of the Quadrennium Held January 7
After a delicious breakfast in the annex of the Grant’s Town Church, workers
of the Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists assembled in the
sanctuary for the first workers’ meeting of the new Quadrennium, January 7,
2007. Bringing the devotional message at that meeting was Pastor Everett
Brown, president of Central Jamaica Conference. Using Philippians 3:1-10 as
his scriptural base, he reminded the workers that the focus of 2007 is hope.

In
his address to the large group of workers gathered, Pastor Brown said that,
as a worker, he would like to spend the rest of his life sharing Jesus, the
Living Word, with a hopeless and dying world. He asked the poignant
question, “Do we know Christ?” By “know” he said he meant having an intimate
relationship with Jesus.
According to the chosen text, Pastor Brown said that Paul’s philosophy of
knowing Christ was not intellectual but intimate. Paul was willing to trade
all that he had acquired for a lasting knowledge of God. He wanted an
experience with Christ. Pastor Brown suggested that every member develop an
intimate relationship that would shape their world view, their thought,
work, attitude, and priorities in life. To know Christ, Pastor Brown said,
is to experience life. Anything that hinders our knowledge of Christ as we
work in the church must be expunged. Again he posed the question, “How will
it prosper the worker if after knowing the work, our own life is
impoverished and wretched?”
Pastor Brown
called on all workers to join together in removing selfishness and
self-centeredness, “Let us lift up Jesus Christ,” he said, “Let us promote
Him in all our relationships and in our work.” When the work is done our
reward is sure. Nothing will rob us of what God has in store for us. God
will fulfill His promise. Today we must begin to experience eternal life by
the way we live and conduct ourselves.
The
Workers’ Meeting continued with presentations from Dr. Bernard Nottage, the
Minister of Health, and his team, who spoke on the issue of the proposed
National Health Insurance scheme. Minister Nottage answered the many
questions posed by the workers in attendance. Also addressing the workers
were the President and the Treasurer of West Indies Union Conference of
Seventh-day Adventists. -Celestine Creighton
