Seventh-day Adventists Women Help Masai Girls
According to a report in the June 17, 2003, Adventist News Network, a group of Seventh-day Adventist women from the NewLife Church Women's Ministry in Nairobi, Kenya, have organized a Rehabilitation and Education Center to help Masai girls. The traditional beliefs and practices continue to deprive many of these girls of basic human rights and force them into early marriages - "sometimes as young as age seven." However, because of the compassion of a concerned group of Adventist ladies, the situation is changing.

Started in 2000 with 15 girls, the Kajiado Rehabilitation and Education Center offers shelter, education, and friendship to 61 girls between the ages of six and twelve. Coming from diverse backgrounds, all of the girls have experienced extreme poverty and forced marriages, and some have been sexually abused.

The principal of the center revealed that the first time some of the girls saw a bed was at the center. They had to be taught everything- how to make up their bed, how to shower, "and even how they're supposed to put on their clothes, because back at home, they only put on sheets, and even some don't have clothing." A staff of four guardian teachers take care of the girls and teach them how to read and write during their four-year stay at the center.

Since women have no rights in Masai culture, when they first arrive at the center, the girls are very shy; but after counseling, interacting with the staff and socializing with one another, they open up and are happy for their new freedom. But the center is challenged by some mothers who cone to take their daughters back to the old way of life. Also, the center has to fight against the practice of female genital cutting. This usually takes place when the Masai girl is seven years old. At this age she is considered to be a woman and ready for marriage.

Some of the women at the NewLife Church serve as surrogate mothers for the girls and visit them once per month. Also, many of the girls' mothers visit consistently and are pleased with what the center has done for their daughters.

The center has been a real "source of hope" and help for many Masai girls. What the NewLife Church women are doing can truly be called "a ministry of compassion at its best." - ANC
