Community Services Hurricane Preparedness Watch
The official hurricane season begins 1st June and ends 30th November of each year. Before the hurricane season each household should make the following preparations:
  1. Make repairs to house to include damaged shingles or tiles, windows, doors or walls.

  2. Check and repair window shutters and keep a supply of wood and plywood for boarding windows.

  3. Trim trees near overhead power lines. If you are in doubt whether it is safe to do this, call Bahamas Electrical Corporation and ask for assistance, to trim other tall trees in your yard. Remove dead or dying trees and debris.

  4. Improve as best you could the drainage of water in your yard to reduce flooding.

  5. Keep on hand flashlights and spare batteries, lantern, a battery-operated radio, a supply of non-perishable food and containers for/of drinking water.

  6. Ensure that your home and its furniture and other contents are fully insured against hurricane damage.

  7. Determine where the nearest hurricane shelter is located by your home and practice driving there to decide the quickest and easiest route.

What To Do When A Hurricane Warning Is Issued
(A hurricane warning is when the hurricane can produce hurricane conditions within 24 hours).  When you are notified by Radio Bahamas or other local radio stations that your island is likely to be affected by a hurricane or a storm with in 24 hours you should:
  1. Check that all precautions that should have been taken earlier are completed.
  2. Fix hurricane shutters to all remaining windows; DO NOT DELAY. High winds may make it impossible to do so later.
  3. Stock up on special medication required by family members.
  4. Feed animals and move them indoors or loose them.
  5. Pick all fruits such as coconuts, mangoes and bread-fruits.
  6. Tie down your gas tanks and satellite dish.
  7. Listen and follow all advice and announcements on Radio Bahamas or other local radio stations. The warnings will advise whether those persons who need to abandon their home should seek safety in a designated shelter in your area.
  8. Stay calm as your ability to handle emergencies will help others who may need your assistance.
  9. Tie down garbage cans, garden furniture and dry loose objects or store inside if possible.
  10. Take down television and radio antennas.
  11. Clean and fill bath-tubs and spare containers with drinking water.
  12. Ensure that your car (s) is/are in working order and fill tanks with gas.
  13. If you will be away from home, turn off the main electricity switch, cut off gas supply and secure gas tank

What To Do During The Hurricane

  1. Stay in your home if it is safe, or in the shelter during the storm.
  2. STAY CALM. If you are calm you will be able to assist others. Listen to your radio for information.
  3. Be cautious during a lull in the storm. This lull may be the result of the eye of the storm passing over you, and it will be followed often by winds with greater violence from the opposite direction.
  4. Be sure that a window or door can be opened on the side of the house opposite to that facing the wind.

Maranatha Celebrates 32nd Anniversary  The 32nd anniversary celebrations of the Maranatha Church got off in high spirits under the theme "His Coming Draws Near" on Wednesday night, June 26. Our illustrious President Keith D. Albury led us into a powerful, soul-stirring message about the coming of our blessed King. We were utterly blessed by a beautiful selection from St. Paul’s Choir with brief remarks from their Pastor, Dr. J. Carl Rahming.

On Friday night, another dynamic, vibrant, leader in the person of Pastor Lynden Williams from the Eleuthera district enriched and blessed us. He offered a combined visual and oral presentation about Christ’s imminent return. Our hearts truly burned within us to see one of our own back on familiar territory speaking so commandingly. We were truly enraptured.

On Sabbath morning, true to form, we were taken to the pinnacle of happiness as guest preacher and former Pastor Trevo W. Thompson from the Oklahoma Conference gave us an enthusiastic, motivational message that encouraged us to hold to our faith and not to lose hope for the King is truly coming soon. He was accompanied by his lovely helpmeet, Sister Jean Thompson.

Sabbath afternoon was another lively meeting amidst the brethren as former pastors converged at the Maranatha Church to reminisce on times past, souls saved and changes made subsequent to their departure.

The gala celebrations culminated in grand style with a musical extravaganza with renditions from Maranatha Senior choir, Maranatha Men’s Chorus, St. Mark’s Baptist Church Male choir and the Philadelphia Choir providing selections that really took us to the mountaintop and back. Brief remarks were given by the pastor of St. Mark’s Baptist Church, Dr. Carrington Pinder, before he introduced his male choir. The nightly musical selections during the anniversary celebrations truly invigorated our souls and the refreshments satisfied us. Pastor Thompson rendered the enthusiastic closing sermonette.

Heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all members, committees, choirs, etc, for the part you played in making this 32nd anniversary one that will long be remembered.

To God be the glory as we await the Lord’s glorious return! Maranatha! Marantha! –Ingeria Miller
