Prime Minister of The Bahamas Commends Adventists

Under the theme The Journey Continues," supporters of Bahamas Academy of Seventh-day Adventists gathered at the construction site of the school on Marshall Road, on Sunday, June 25, 2006, shortly after 4:00 p.m., to give God thanks and praise for His blessings and guidance in the building of the new school. Heading the list of special guests and friends of the Academy who were at the service was the Rt. Hon. Perry G. Christie, Prime Minister of The Commonwealth of the Bahamas. When he saw how much work had been done on the building, he remarked, "I am astonished to see how successful you are to this point." He expressed a desire to see the Master plan for the development of the site, and he encouraged the administration of the Conference to include in the plan a unit to accommodate the physically and mentally challenged students who also need to have access to the kind of education offered by Bahamas Academy .    SEE PHOTOS

Commending the Adventist Church for its outstanding heritage in Christian education, Prime Minister Christie said that the new site of the Academy was a good location to give students in the area the opportunity to obtain a good education. He emphasized that when they teach the children in the new school, the teachers should double the level of intensity that the Adventists use in doing evangelism and in teaching biblical principles to their members. He made this suggestion because he believed that the Academy was "making good citizens in this country."

The Prime Minister commended Dr. Leonard Johnson, president of the Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists for his "romantic upbringing;" for Dr. Johnson rose from a bag boy in the supermarket to an outstanding leader in a respected church organization. (Just before he introduced the Prime Minister, Dr. Johnson gave a brief sketch of his life that included some of the challenges he faced and how he was able to achieve his goal).

To show their gratitude to God and support for Bahamas Academy, following an appeal by Elder C. Melvin Lewis, Treasurer of Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, the Church District Leaders and the other persons attending the service gave over Thirty-two Thousand Dollars ($32,000.00) toward the building project.

Moderated by Pastor Eric D. Clarke, executive secretary of the Bahamas Conference and Mrs. Joan Scavella, Vice-principal of the Bahamas Academy Elementary Division the program was entertaining and informative. The expressions of thanks and praise were punctuated by inspirational music by various groups and the Pathfinder Band. Among the groups that rendered musical selections were the San Salvador Children’s Choir, Bahamas Academy Boys’ Choir and the Convention Choir.

Since the ground was broken early last year for the construction of the New Bahamas Academy , work on the project has been moving along steadily. The Volunteer Bahamas Adventists (VBA) group, under the direction of Mr. Winston Ash, president of the group, has been in the vanguard of the building program and God has blessed their efforts. With the encouragement and prodding of Dr. Leonard Johnson who birthed the idea for the formation of the group, the members of this group have committed themselves to finish what they have started. Mr. Ash spoke for the group and echoed this spirit of commitment. Mr. Cecil Cartwright, the on site technical advisor for the project, also voiced his continued support for the project.

Let us all lend our support, in every way possible, to see the project completed

Ministry of Education Endorses our Books Our full-time colporteur, Lebert McBean, is on the move spreading the books like leaves of Autumn. Brother McBean went to the Ministry of Education and was able to convince them to use our books as resource materials for teachers and students in the education system. The areas supplied are Family Life and Home Economics. I am proud to report that all the government high schools and some of the private high schools have been furnished with our books. For the first time in the Bahamas questions appearing on the BGCSE exams were sourced from our books. Recently brother McBean has also convinced the Primary division of the Ministry of Education to add to their curriculum our storybooks for children. The Ministry was impressed with the morals taught in our books. the Public Library System is another area targeted by Brother McBean. He has sold our books to almost all our Public Libraries.

Brother McBean is not only spreading our books in New Providence, but each year he makes trips to the Family Islands spreading the message of hope to the people of the Bahamas.

Keep up the good work, Brother McBean. We are proud of you. -Dr. John Carey
