During the weekend of July 5-7, 2002, a small team of workers comprising
of Garvin Kemp, Alvin
Collie
and Pastor L. Johnson, traveled to South Long Island to assist with the
construction of the new Steven Seventh-day Adventist Church building. When
the team arrived on Long Island, the building was at the point of two
courses of blocks above the footing. However, through the combined efforts
of this team from the New Providence SDA Church, three men from Long
Island, Warren Rogers, Peter Strachan and Rashad Rahming, along with three
sisters, Carla Rogers, Barbara and Tenia Strachan, the building was taken
to the foundation level, in preparation for fill, electrical and plumbing
roughings.
As we consider what has been done thus far in the planning and
construction of this building, one is led to exclaim "this is truly
the Lord's doing." Given the small membership and their limited
resources, "miraculous" best describes the happenings. To
explain, the building plans, inclusive of electrical and plumbing
specifications, were prepared by a Nassau member at cost. Additionally,
the building was laid out through the generosity of a non-SDA in Long
Island. He also assisted with materials and initial work on the footing
stage. In fact, others in the community also helped. If that was not
enough, a brother in North Long Island made his concrete mixer available
for use on Sunday, July 7, at no charge to the group. Still, at the end of
that day God had another blessing in store as a prominent businessman,
without being asked, gave a cash donation toward the building project.
Certainly, these happenings confirm the saying that "when we step out
in faith, God comes to our aid always" He did this convincingly in
Long Island.
At the end of Sunday, July 7, the brethren were all smiles
as they reflected on the enormous outpouring of God’s blessings. While they
are grateful for the obvious hand of God in their efforts, they are not
unmindful of the many current and future obstacles and challenges.
Nonetheless, they are also mindful of the awesomeness and greatness of the God
they serve. They continue to solicit our prayers and support as they seek to
erect a church building to God's glory, not only in South Long Island, but
also in the North. Persons wishing to assist with the Long Island project may
contact Sister Dorothy Ritchie at Centreville, or Brother Warren Rogers in
Long Island at 242 337-1598. Editor

What To Do When A
Hurricane Warning Is Issued
(A hurricane warning is when the hurricane can produce hurricane conditions
within 24 hours).
When you are notified by Radio Bahamas or other local radio stations that
your island is likely to be affected by a hurricane or a storm within 24 hours
you should:
- Check that all precautions that should have been taken earlier are
completed.
- Fix hurricane shutters to all remaining windows; DO NOT DELAY. High
winds may make it impossible to do so later.
- Stock up on special medication required by family members.
- Feed animals and move them indoors or loose them.
- Pick all fruits such as coconuts, mangoes and bread-fruits.
- Tie down your gas tanks and satellite dish.
- Listen and follow all advice and announcements on Radio Bahamas or other
local radio stations. The warnings will advise whether those persons who
need to abandon their home should seek safety in a designated shelter in
your area.
- Stay calm as your ability to handle emergencies will help others who may
need your assistance.
- Tie down garbage cans, garden furniture and dry loose objects or store
inside if possible.
- Take down television and radio antennas.
- Clean and fill bath-tubs and spare containers with drinking water.
- Ensure that your car (s) is/are in working order and fill tanks with
gas.
- If you will be away from home, turn off the main electricity switch, cut
off gas supply and secure gas tank
What To Do During The
Hurricane
- Stay in your home if it is safe, or in the shelter during the
storm.
- STAY CALM. If you are calm you will be able to assist others. Listen to
your radio for information.
- Be cautious during a lull in the storm. This lull may be the result of
the eye of the storm passing over you, and it will be followed often by
winds with greater violence from the opposite direction.
- Be sure that a window or door can be opened on the side of the house
opposite to that facing the wind.-Dr. M. D. Toote, Director of
Community Services
