Report on General Conference Session
On Wednesday, June 29, 2005, the 58th General
Conference Session of the world Seventh-day Adventist Church began in St.
Louis, Missouri. The two delegates that will represent the Bahamas Conference
at the Session are Dr. L.A. Johnson and Mrs. Rowena Smith. They will be part
of the 2000+ delegates that will represent the various fields around the
world. Almost 1000 Bahamians will be among the thousands of others who will
attend this General Conference Session. Our Bahamian news team, Pastor
Barrington Brennen, webmaster, and Philip Humes, videographer and
photographer, will provide us with up-to-date news and photos about the
activities at the General Conference Session. Check our website (www.bahamasconference.org)
and the Logos to keep informed.
The theme that will be echoed by the various speakers during the convention is
“Transformed in Christ.” The devotional speaker for the opening night, Dr.
Randy Roberts, centered his remarks on the importance of worship. He said that
the different interests of our church such as evangelism, education, health,
small groups, traditional Bible studies are necessary and important, but their
main objective is to bring individuals into a worship relationship with God.
Supporting his thoughts with quotations from various Christian authors, Dr.
Roberts emphasized that we did not give enough attention to worship in our
church. The motivation for his emphasis on worship is the call to worship that
is embedded in the Third Angel’s Message of Revelation 14:9. He pointed out
that who we worship will determine how we live.
The message was very inspirational and fitted the theme; for if we are to be
“transformed in Christ,” we must worship Him. And through our worship
experience, we behold Him. It is an accepted teaching of scripture that by
beholding we are changed. So, if we behold Jesus consistently through worship,
we will be changed into His likeness. We will become more like Jesus. That is
what worship is all about.
We anticipate
the other inspirational devotional messages that will be shared by the other
speakers during the rest of the Session.

We Can Depend On Our Young People It is no secret that we are living in
a society that is plagued with some serious social problems, and the young
people of our nation are deeply involved. However, I believe that we can
depend on the majority of the youth of the Adventist Church to shun the
promiscuous life style that prevails in the wider society and hold up the
standards of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
As I listened
to a report last week of the pervasiveness of homosexuality and lesbianism
among the youth in many of our high schools, I was shocked. But I was
encouraged when I attended the Youth’s Day Service at the Maranatha Church on
Sabbath, June 25, 2005. The young people in charge of the programme and those
who participated appeared to be serious about their religion and their
relationship with God. The energy with which they performed, especially their
inspirational singing, indicated that they were trying to serve the Lord with
all that was in them. If they continue that spiritual fervor, coupled with a
meaningful study of God’s word, we can depend on our young people to carry on
the work that God has given us to spread the Three Angels’ Messages to the
world.
After presenting several selections of soul-stirring music, the Maranatha
youths were ready for a challenging message form their pastor, Eric Dannie
Clarke. Pastor Clarke spoke on “The consequences of a Bad Decision.” His
message was based on the story of young King Rehoboam as recorded in I Kings
12. Instead of taking the counsel of his wise elders, this young king took the
bad advice of his peers. Thus the decision he made to treat his people in a
harsh manner was disastrous for him.
Although we live in a promiscuous society, and many young people have no
regard for older people, our youths can be different. They were admonished to
take counsel from the word of God and positive persons of experience. That
way, we might be able to change the trend in society.
Several young persons were honored and given awards for their positive
contributions as Bahamian Adventist youth. A representative from the Ministry
of Youth & Culture was in attendance. He brought remarks and made the
presentations to the outstanding young people present.
