Come Alive With Jesus--Summer Events for Youth Ministries
The 32nd Independence Celebration showcased youths who are making positive
choices and contributions. This positive choice was depicted
most
eloquently during a face-off demonstration by four of the nation’s top
marching bands, among which was the illustrious Pathfinder Band. The PF band
came out swinging, pulling out all the stops, with a breathtaking performance
of their 100 member squad, under the leadership of Band Director Kirk Price.
The 15 minute march & musical routine was interrupted, just long enough for
the spectators to hold their breath in awe, as the Pathfinder Drill Squad
dazzled them with flawless execution of precision drilling, flag waving, and
domino-style salutes and twirls. Both groups did us proud and represented SDA
well. To God, we give the glory.
Further, at the Ministry of
Education’s National Summit on Education, held on Thursday, July 7th, the
Pathfinder organization was recognized by the Hon. Alfred Sears and received
an award for “its dedication in molding character through the teaching of
godly principles.” During the summer months, we also continued with the PET
program at the Willimae Pratt and Simpson Penn centers for girls and boys.
Also, on Sunday July 17, at 5:30 a.m. Masterguides In Training (MGIT) met at
the Coral Harbor roundabout to begin one of the physical requirements of their
program, a 3 hour 5-mile hike in the wooded forest of Coral Harbor.
What started as a serene and
tranquil walk along the road switched quickly to a wooded maze of trees,
quarry, trails, canal, tracks, fallen trees, lakes and frequent mosquito
calls. For some MGIT hikers, it was brutal, but for others it was interesting.
Guided only by directional markers of stones, sticks, trees and sand, the hike
proved to be a bitter-sweet experience, with some completing the trek in under
three hours, while others, having wandered for two hours, with about 150
meters to go, missed a marker, and never completed.
However, the scenic unspoiled beauty
of nature, (as we meandered through cedar trees, on man-made trails, along the
harbor and natural lakes), will be indelibly etched in the memory of all
participants. This Sunday, they will be engaging in a community service at
Mary Ingraham Home. While, many were off to the General Conference Session in
St. Louis, the SDA Youth Summer basketball league was in full swing. Junior
and senior teams from a number of churches and the school played each other on
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights. We commend the Message of Hope,
Philadelphia, Bahamas Academy, and Bethany Junior boys’ teams along with the
Centerville, Living Faith, Bahamas Academy and Johnson Park Senior teams for
making the playoffs. The championship series between the Philadelphia and
Bethany (Jr) and the Centerville and Living Faith ( Sr.) began on Tuesday
past. It was noted that many of the smaller churches have really made an
impressive showing this year.
This speaks well for the growth and
future of youth ministries. We also commend the members who came out each
night to support their respective teams. The basketball season ends tonight at
the BA Gym when the final games will be played and awards presented. The
highlight will be a pastor’s game. You won’t want to miss it.
In addition the 17th Annual Jeff
Rodgers basketball camp, which took place over the past few weeks, concluded
this week. Each year hundreds of young people from within and without the
church learn valuable skills (not only in basketball) but in their overall
development. We move on to the Annual Youth Summer Camp meeting. Under the
theme “Come Alive with Jesus,” the youth of the conference are geared up and
ready to experience Jesus as never before and to share, and witness of Him to
their friends, fellow students, and co-workers. The speaker, former executive
secretary of the conference, and pastor of the Bethany and Message of Hope
churches, Pastor Leo C. Rolle, is ready to be used by Holy Spirit as His
instrument during the series of meeting. Utilizing the ministerial students,
we held a night of revival and prayer on Wednesday past at the Maranatha
Church.
On this Wednesday night, July 27th,
we will converge at the Hillview church for another meeting. Then on Sabbath
evening, July 30th, we take the message outdoors as we assemble at Yellow
Elder Park. The nightly service will be held from Sunday July 31st to Friday,
August 5th, except Monday, at the Hillview church. At 6:00 p.m. each night,
there will be seminars and workshops on topics relevant to young people.
Sabbath morning, August 6th, the youth will worship at the Hillview church.
Summer Youth camp meeting will conclude that same evening, at 6:00 p.m. in the
Yellow Elder park. Then, Gods willing, early Sunday morning, August 7th, over
one hundred Adventurers, Pathfinders, and counselors, from Nassau and the
family islands will board the Bahamas Fast Ferry, Seawind on a short trip to
Central Andros for the annual Adventurer/ Pathfinder camp. This year’s theme
is “Champions in Christ.” Each church is asked to remember their appropriation
toward the overall budget of the camp. In addition each church is asked to
sponsor a number of Adventurers/ Pathfinders to this camp. We believe no
investment is too large for the salvation of our young people. The goal for
youth ministry is salvation and service. During the summer months, we hope
that each parent, church, or family member will ensure that their young people
are involved in the programs that will help in achieving this goal. Let’s come
alive with Jesus!
