The Responsibility of A Christian Citizen
Last weekend we celebrated our 32nd anniversary as an independent nation of more than three hundred thousand people. The activities during the weekend gave us the opportunity to reflect on the meaning of independence and how far we have come since that eventful night of July 10th, 1973. For many of us, the service that was held on Clifford Park Saturday night brought back fond memories of the transition from colony to nationhood - from a British subject to a Bahamian citizen. Then for others, the service awakened a consciousness of the great responsibility for a Christian citizen.

What is the responsibility of a Christian citizen? One who is a born again child of God, a Christian citizen, must regard it his/her duty to be fully responsible to God for every thought, word, and deed. In other words, a Christian citizen should represent Christ in all things. Once we have taken on the name of Christ, we ought to live in harmony with the principles of God’s Word. When others see a Christian citizen, they ought to see Jesus in him/her.
Jesus was a law-abiding citizen, and he taught his disciples and others to obey the law of the land. On one occasion his Jewish detractors asked Him whether it was lawful for them to pay taxes to Caesar (the Roman authority). Jesus helped them to see that Caesar was the legitimate authority; therefore, they should give Caesar what was due him at the same time, they ought to give to God what was due Him (Luke 20:20-25).

In 1Peter 2:13, the Apostle says that the Christian citizen should submit to human authority. He further states that the Christian should be an example of genuine Christianity and “Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the Emperor” (1Peter 2:17). This is the formula for Christian unity. If one honors all people, he will show respect for everyone. Even when there is disagreement, an attitude of genuine respect ought to prevail.
As a true representative of Christ, the Christian citizen will love his fellow Christians. This is a true test of discipleship; for Jesus said that everyone will know that you are his disciple if you love the brotherhood (John 13:34). If he exhibits genuine love for his fellow Christian brother, the Christian citizen will exert a tremendous impact on the community. Love in action is a powerful force for good.

When Peter tells the Christian citizen to fear God, he is not talking about being afraid of God. He means that God should be looked upon with awe and reverence. It is only when God is given His special place in the life of an individual that he will reverence and show respect for God and respect his fellow human being. The same kind of respect shown to the ordinary person should be shown to the king. If you are a Christian citizen, it does not matte what your opinion might be about those in authority. What is important is how you express your views of them. Are you submissive, kind, and respectful? Are you like Christ? The responsibility of the Christian citizen is to be Christlike.

A Word for The Literature Ministry Although we live in an age when there are so many distractions that grip our attention and tend to draw us away from our purpose as followers of Christ, it is still clear that getting the message out through the printed pages is very important.

Many years ago Ellen White wrote the following: "The great object of our publications is to exalt God, to call men's attention to the living truths of His Word. God calls upon us to lift up not our own standard, not the standard of this world, but His standard of truth." T 7, p. 151.
Accordingly, we continue to promote the literature ministry as an avenue that members can utilize to educate and inform the people in our community regarding various issues of life.

This summer four students from Northern Caribbean University have been walking through the streets of New Providence scattering the pages of truth. Many families and individuals have benefited from the educational, health and spiritually uplifting books they bought. These books are designed to bring hope and help to sincere seekers of health, happiness and truth. But we need more persons who are willing to consistently take our books and magazines to the people. Time is running out, so we need to buy up the opportunity to witness in every way possible.

It is interesting to note that we have just over 42,000 literature evangelists world-wide. This puts us in third place behind the Mormons who have 70,000 and the Jehovah's Witness with more than 90,000 persons making house-to-house visits regularly. More local church members need to get involved in this soul-saving ministry. Ellen White declared in 1901: "When church members realize the importance of the circulation of our literature, they will devote more time to this work."
If you hear the Lord calling you to witness through the Literature Ministry, part-time or full-time, contact the Publishing Director of the Bahamas Conference at 341-4021.

Congratulations Hearty congratulations are extended to Mrs. Celestine Creighton on her successful completion of the course work for the Master degree in School Administration from Northern Caribbean University.
