Seventy-nine Graduate from Bahamas Academy Elementary

At an impressive graduation ceremony on Sunday, June 5, 2005, seventy-nine students received their certificates for successfully completing all the requirements for graduating from Bahamas Academy Elementary Division. To the delight and admiration of parents, relatives, teachers, and friends, the graduates smartly dressed in their school uniform, marched into the newly refurbished Church of God Auditorium, Joe Farrington Road, shortly after 5 p.m., and took their places. Using as their aim, "Strive for the best, don't settle for less," the Class of 2005 adopted the motto: "To Discover, To Persevere, To Excel."   See More Photos

In her address to the graduates, Mrs. Elma Garraway, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health, congratulated them for what they had achieved and encouraged them to seek to realize their potential as they continue their education. She also applauded the parents and teachers for the part they played in helping the students to achieve success.

Mrs. Garraway reminded the graduates that they have to compete with professionals and skilled workers in a global economy. Therefore, in order for the Bahamas to maintain its position as the country with the third highest standard of living in the western hemisphere, they will have to achieve "higher standards of excellence" during their secondary schooling. She further advised the graduates to plan now to be both outstanding students and good citizens; for success is achieved through careful planning. Then she outlined the following seven laws of success:

  1. Set a realistic goal that is achievable and that will utilize your skills and talents to contribute to your success and that of our country.
  2. Educate yourself for your life's tasks, and take responsibility for your own learning.
  3. Strive to maintain good health, for "a healthy mind makes a healthy body."
  4. Be enthusiastic but conscientious in all you do. Remember that "anything worth doing is worth doing well."
  5. Be resourceful and adaptable.
  6. Persevere in the face of all odds.
  7. Maintain a positive relationship with God.

The students were encouraged to follow these laws as they plan for the future.

Danielle Deveaux, the student with the highest GPA, responded on behalf of the class. In accepting the challenge from the speaker to not settle for anything less than the best, she urged the class to do everything possible to excel. It should be noted that the majority of the graduates were honor students for the entire period of their attendance at the Academy. Danielle Deveaux, Myesha Rolle and Tristan Knowles were the top three students in the class.

Fathers' Day - Family Fun Run/Walk The excitement and anticipation are mounting as the date (Sunday, June 19, beginning at 7 a.m. at Breath of Life) for the Father's Day - Fun Run draws near. Pastors, first elders, and Adventist men's leaders are busy registering "fathers and sons" for that featured category.

This Father's Day event which is being spearheaded by the Breath of Life Church on Marshall Road, South Beach, is open to all members male and female, young and old - free of charge (No entry fee). However, there is a father and son category where a small registration fee per person is required (see your pastor or first elder for details).

The objective of the father - son category is to foster and encourage bonding between fathers and sons, and older men and younger men in our congregations and homes. There is a tremendous bond forged as older and younger men play together. This we hope to capitalize upon.

A father is any male who has fathered or adopted a child. A son would be a young male under thirty (30) who has not yet fathered a child. The father who may not have a son or whose son may not attend his church, can adopt a son from his church for this event, as teams must enter by churches.

A quota has been assigned to each church as follows (this is a revised quota):

  1. Large churches: Grants Town, Centreville & Hillview = 10 teams
  2. Medium size churches: Maranatha, New Providence, Johnson Park, Living Faith, Francophone = 7 teams
  3. Small churches: All others not mentioned above = 5 teams.

Churches who meet their quota will receive 100 points. Additional points will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd positions as follows:

1st place = 10 points; 2nd place = 5 points; and 3rd place = 3 points.

The winning church will receive an all expense paid trip to Orlando for two (2). Second and third places will receive very substantial prizes, including hotel rooms, watches, gift certificates, etc. Breakfast will be available. See your pastor or first elder for more details.

Great Gospel Concert at Hillview Shortly after 6 p.m. last Sabbath afternoon, June 4, an eager crowd of young and old members of the various Adventist churches on New Providence and a few curious on-lookers from the community gathered at the Hillview church for the much advertised George Gordon concert. The musical treat started with one of the popular voices among gospel singers in our local Adventist church, Sunae Russell. Her rendering of "My Help Cometh From The Lord" was just heavenly. She was followed by Tony Burnside who in his unique style lifted the spirits of the audience as he sang, "Great Is Thy Faithfulness."

Fresh from Montemorelos University in Mexico, Nadia's rendering of "When I call on Jesus" electrified the audience as she sang with feeling and understanding.

George Gordon, the main artist for the afternoon lived up to our expectations. Though short in statue, he stood tall in his relationship to Christ. He interspersed the presentation of his original songs with humorous personal anecdotes. The audience was literally moved and uplifted by Brother Gordon's music ministry.

Some of us were pleasantly surprised by the splendid performance of the Hillview Youth choir. Their voices blended so harmoniously as they sang joyfully to the honor and glory of God. The well known Adventist gospel singers, Harmonious Praise, sang toward the end of the program, and were well received. Special thanks is extended to Ray Jennings for ably moderating the program and the Hillview church for graciously hosting the event. What a wonderful, inspirational gospel concert! To God be the glory!

Bahamas Academy New Building As we reported to you last week, the first phase of the New Bahamas Academy building is progressing satisfactorily. This week the workmen were busy pouring the footing for the foundation. If you do not know anything about building, you might wonder why it is taking so long for the workers to start putting up the blocks. However, when you talk with the professional builders, you can appreciate what is required to get the foundation right. Tons of concrete and the appropriate amount of steel have been put in place to ensure that the building will be constructed according to specification. Soon the blocks will go up at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow, we need volunteers to sift sand, operate the mixer and lay blocks. Please come and help!

In order for our hopes to become reality, everyone who is able ought to commit himself/herself to giving an amount on a regular basis. Those of you who have already pledged and have been giving to the Academy, please continue to give. Now is the time to turn in your pledges. To the new contributors who may need guidance in planning your giving, we say consult your pastor or call the Treasury department at the Conference Office. A special blessing awaits everyone who gives unselfishly to advance Christian education.
