The
Past Seven Days
The
past seven days have been most eventful with numerous happenings. Beginning
with breakfast and treats for fathers; followed by graduation exercises and
the Pastors/Elders Summit. Today,
pastors and their families are in retreat with Dr. Enell Hall and Sister
Patricia Allen of West Indies Union as presenters.

Also, during the week, Philip Frederick
Nairn, an elder for many years at
the Centreville Church, died as a result of a heart attack on Tuesday, June
19, at Doctors Hospital leaving to mourn his wife Cleo and children, Phylis,
Cleophil and Philisia as well as other family members. Condolences are
extended to them and all other bereaving families.
Dollar-a-Day Initiative
At the beginning of the last seven days, most of our churches and
pastors promoted and appealed to members to support the dollar-a-day
initiative designed to aid Bahamas Academy
with the ongoing construction on Marshall Road. Wanting to lead by example,
I took the opportunity to lead out in the process with the Education
Secretary, Belva Zonicle, at the Centreville Church and was rather pleased
with the positive response. The same, no doubt, would have taken place at
other centers. In fact, I have challenged the Centreville Church to give an
amount of $5000 by Mid-Year Convention which kicks off next Wednesday, June
27, at Grant's Town. I implore each of you to support the drive as we seek
to complete the building for the secondary division of Bahamas Academy in
time for September 2008. Imagine the results with a minimum of 5000 persons
giving a dollar a day? Do you know what that
will translate into each month? Approximately $140,000! Of course there are
more than 5000 of us and with more giving greater will be the result! The
bar joists for the second floor have been ordered, and owing to Government
exemption, we have been able to save ourselves $50,000. Additionally, I have
been informed that the block drive at Bahamas Academy coupled with other
initiatives have netted over $30,000. Thanks to you. Also, the teachers and
pastors, who for the most part contribute monthly, will have a gift for the
school at Midyear Convention. Support the advancement of Adventist Christian
education and ensure a solid future for our children, grandchildren and the
nation's youth!

Dame Joan A. Sawyer Speaks at B. A. Graduation On Monday evening,
June 18, 2007, The Rt. Hon. Dame Joan A. Sawyer, President of the Court of
Appeal, gave a challenging commencement address to the graduates of Bahamas
Academy of Seventh-day Adventists, at their graduation ceremony at the
Wyndham Nassau Resort and Crystal Palace, Cable Beach, Nassau, Bahamas. In
her presentation, Dame Sawyer explained how her early spiritual grounding
helped her in her quest to achieve her goal. She counseled the students to
anchor their faith in God, be truthful always, and success will be theirs.
During the ceremony, hundreds of
parents, relatives, and friends were present to witness 52 students receive
their graduation certificates. Several of the graduates were offered a total
of $120,000.00 in scholarships from Oakwood College, Huntsville, Alabama.
The principal, Mr. Anthony
Burrows, gave a comprehensive report of the operation of the Academy for the
2006/2007 school year. And in his remarks, Dr. Leonard A. Johnson, President
of the Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, encouraged the
gathering to continue to support the Bahamas Academy building project. He
also acknowledged the significant contributions that parents, teachers, and
other well-wishers have made to the school.
