Focus on
Bahamas Academy School Family
Since Wednesday evening, June 27,
2007, members of the Adventist churches in New Providence have been
listening to sound Biblical preaching and heart-touching music at Midyear
Convention. Also, many convention goers took time to fellowship with one
another. However, as we conclude this convention today, I would like to
highlight the Bahamas Academy school family. Bahamas Academy exists to help
young people who want to enhance their academic, social, and spiritual
development. So we count it a privilege to have been given the opportunity
to help parents prepare young people for worthy citizenship in the
Commonwealth of The Bahamas and for permanent residence in the New Earth. We
appreciate your consistent support for the Academy. This is not some
idealistic nonsense; it is the gospel truth and nothing but the truth. The
truth is you have a vested interest in this school. It is yours in many
respects, and it is for your use to educate your children.
Through your support, parents and
friends, this school has grown into the outstanding educational institution
it is today. Your support has come in terms of the assistance you give
through voluntary service, and the cooperation you exhibit in school
sponsored activities. Your concern is also manifested in attending events
such as a graduation ceremony, and in the financial contributions you make
in terms of donations toward the New Bahamas Academy building project
I also commend the hard-working administrators who are responsible for the
day-to-day management of the Academy. I am aware that it is no easy task to
operate a school in this 21st century environment where everybody has
rights. Sometimes school administrators have to make tough decisions for the
overall good of the school and all stakeholders. But those who are not
involved in the decision making process do not always understand the
reasoning behind certain decisions. I think you should know that the
ultimate objective of all administrative decisions is to benefit the
students.
Key to the success of any school
is the involvement of classroom teachers who keep the students' noses to the
grindstone every day. Principal Burrows and his administrative team have a
group of dedicated, concerned and caring teachers who are not afraid of hard
work. Teachers, I want you to know that we appreciate your commitment to the
philosophy of our educational system. We applaud your willingness to go all
out to help Bahamas Academy develop well-rounded young people who will make
a positive difference in our society. Students, as you continue to study at
this institution, or leave to pursue higher education or enter the job
market, it is our hope that you will strive to achieve God's ideal for your
lives. Ellen White, a very perceptive author, states in the book Education,
page 18: "Higher than the highest human thought can reach is God's Ideal for
His children. Godliness --- godlikeness - is the Goal to be reached. Before
the student there is opened a path of continual progress." Students, walk in
this path, and success will be yours.
Today, everyone will be given an opportunity to make a financial
contribution to Bahamas Academy. Give according to how God has prospered
you, and He will continue to make you a blessing. Have a happy Sabbath!

Church Elders and Pastors Summit More than seventy local church
elders and twenty-one pastors of the Bahamas Conference gathered for two
nights at the New Providence Community Center, June 20 and 21, 2007, for an
empowerment and training summit. The theme for the summit was "Encouraging
Unity Among Pastors and Elders." The two-night summit focused on two main
areas: the role and function of the elder and teaching the elders how to
build a sermon with the use of the computer and the Libronix software (the
worlds best Bible software). The two presenters were Pastor Enall Hall, Vice
President and Ministerial Director for the West Indies Union Conference of
Seventh-day Adventists, Mandeville, Jamaica, and Pastor Leonard Johnson,
president of the Bahamas Conference.
Pastor Hall instructed the elders
and pastors on the role and function of the pastor and how elders and
pastors can work together in unity. He emphasized that since the elders are
always at the church, they are closer to the members than the pastors.
Therefore, they play a very important part in church nurture, unity, and
growth. Pastor Leonard Johnson, with the use of the video projector and
computer, showed, in a meticulous way, how to construct a sermon. The elders
were very appreciative of this training and left the summit charged to lead
more effectively and to stand beside their pastors in finishing the work of
the gospel.
Ministers Refreshed to Serve Better It was a spiritual renewal and a
physical rejuvenation. For twenty-eight hours, Adventist pastors of the
Bahamas Conference, their spouses and children, enjoyed a much-needed
re-invigorating retreat. On Friday night, June 22, 2007, the ministers and
their families gathered at the New Providence Community Center on Blake
Road, Nassau, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. for fellowship, prayer and instructions
geared to enrich the lives of the pastors and their families. And all day
Sabbath, June 23, the ministers' families were at the Harbor Resort,
Paradise Island, for a retreat designed to revive and effect change in
ministry. Pastor Peter Joseph, ministerial director of the Bahamas
Conference, organized this meaningful event. Special guests for the weekend
were Pastor Enall Hall, ministerial director for the West Indies Union
Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and Patricia Allen, Coordinator of the
Ministers' Spouses Association, West Indies Union.
Pastor Hall shared about the
importance of balancing ministry and family life. He noted that family comes
before ministry and that a healthy family make a more effective ministry. He
also shared on general principles about effective pastoral leadership.
Pastor Leonard Johnson, Conference
president, shared about the trends of apostasy in the world church and the
role of the pastor in affecting change. Perhaps the most memorable phrase of
the weekend was that of Pastor Joseph when he said "ministry and
spirituality are not the same thing." He instilled in the hearts of the
pastors that their work in the ministry may be considered outstanding and
noteworthy by many, but it can be more effective if the pastor is a
spiritual leader or has a personal relationship with Jesus.
Pastor Michael Toote, a certified
grief counselor and attorney-at-law, shared on two very important subjects:
grief and loss management and the importance mechanisms of a will. These
topics were most appreciated by all and they provided insights and direction
for the pastors and their families. Barrington Brennen, family ministries
director of the conference and a nationally certified psychologist (USA),
shared about the importance of romance and intimacy for the pastor and his
wife. He also pointed out the negative effects of abuse and pornography on
the pastors' family. He further encouraged all to have healthy marriage
relationships because it will impact their ministry. Pastor Johnson ended
the Sabbath retreat at sunset with a devotion on the dynamics of meaningful
leadership. He charged the pastors to have a closer walk with Jesus and to
strive to be all that God wants them to be. which is the foundation of a
dynamic ministry.
The majority of the pastors and their families spent Saturday night at the
hotel, and on Sunday morning, June 24, they returned to their homes ready to
minister to their congregations.
