Good News 17th Anniversary and Furniture Dedication

Good News Seventh-day Adventist Church
Air-conditioned.  Seating Capacity: 350

During the weekend of Friday, May 27, to Sunday, May 29, 2005, the Good News Seventh-day Adventist

Church, located on Great Britain Street, Flamingo Gardens, celebrated seventeen years of Christian witness. Friends from the community and members from sister churches on the Island of New Providence joined in the anniversary celebrations and the dedication of the new church furniture.

The theme for the weekend, "To God Be The Glory," was appropriately chosen, for in all of the services for the weekend the emphasis was on giving glory to God for what was accomplished. The leaders and members acknowledged that it was not their bright ideas that grew the church over the years, but the mercy and blessings of the Lord that they experienced material and spiritual growth.

On Friday, a former pastor, Wilfred T. Adderley, brought greetings and encouraged the members to continue their journey with the Lord. Former senator, Desmond Bannister, also greeted the gathering and commended the church for what they had achieved.

Supported by the Message of Hope Church Choir, Pastor Leo C. Rolle, another former pastor, was the guest speaker for the Friday night service. Using as his topic, "The Glory of God," Pastor Rolle stirred the hearts of the listeners with a powerful message based on Psalm 138. He pointed out that praise is not dependent on the number of persons that make up the membership of the church rather it depends on the individual member’s relationship with the Lord. The closer one gets to Christ the more one is inclined to praise the Lord because that closeness allows one to see that God is worthy to be praised. Further, as we reflect on what God has done through just a few members at Good News, we must exclaim that God is great! And we have to conclude that little becomes much when we put it in His hands.

From Sabbath School to the Praise Service in the afternoon, the Sabbath services were inspirational and full of praise. Hundreds packed the main sanctuary for the Divine Worship. The special welcome, the items of music and every aspect of the program appeared to be saying "Let us give glory to God." The congregation was enlightened as Pastor Neville E. Scavella, a former pastor of the church, recounted how the Lord blessed and guided the church in the move from Carmichael Road to Flamingo Gardens. Pastor Scavella served as pastor of Good News during the move and was responsible for coordinating the free and paid labor for the major stages of the construction of the building.

The speaker for the Divine Service was Dr. Leonard A. Johnson, president of The Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. His discourse was entitled "Bless The Lord." He stated that one might ask, "How could man bless God?" He explained that we bless the Lord when we make a contribution to enhance God’s work. Good News had reasons to bless God. It is because of His blessings that this church was able to celebrate 17 years on the battlefield for the Lord.

The main text, Psalm 103: 1 – 5, served as a basis for the message. In this segment of the Psalm, David is giving recognition to God for providing everything that he needed.

According to the Authorized King James Version, David said:

1. Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless His holy name.

2. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits:

3. Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;

4. Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;

5. Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Dr. Johnson then shared have David advances the idea that we ought to go all out to bless the Lord and that we should not forget the benefits He offers us. Therefore, we ought to bless God because He forgives, heals, redeems, satisfies, and is kind and merciful. Under all circumstances, we should praise the Lord. When we reflect upon the way God has guided and provided for us, we can join David in blessing the Lord.

On Sabbath afternoon, the celebration took the form of a musical program. Several groups and individuals cheered the hearts of the people with heavenly music. And on Sunday this special weekend closed with the dedication of the new furniture for the church.

We congratulate the members of Good News and Dr. Hugh Roach, the current pastor, and his wife, Mrs. Olga Roach, for planning and executing a memorable weekend of celebrations. May the Good News church continue to be a beacon of hope in its community.

VBA Needs You It is important that Winston Ash and the team of volunteers who have been working on the New Bahamas Academy building project are aware that we appreciate what they have done and are doing to ensure that the foundation for Phase I of the construction plan is done properly. If you were to pass by the site, you would be able to see the progress of the building. Soon we hope to see the steel for the columns and the blocks going up.

In order for our hopes to become reality, everyone who is able ought to commit himself/herself to giving an amount on a regular basis. Those of you who have already pledged and have been giving to the Academy, please continue to give. Now is the time to turn in your pledges. To the new contributors who may need guidance in planning your giving, we say consult your pastor or call the Treasury department at the Conference Office. A special blessing awaits everyone who gives unselfishly to advance Christian education.

Keep in touch with your pastor and with the Logos to be updated on the VBA work schedule. We will need your full and consistent support at the appropriate time.

3ABN On Air In Exuma!  Following years of negotiating with Cable Bahamas to include The Three Angels Broadcasting Network (3ABN) channel as a part of its basic package in all Family Islands, a dream came true for the members and residents of the island of Exuma last week Thursday, May 26. About 4 or 5 years ago, the leadership of ASI in conjunction with the Communication Department of the Conference made several calls upon the management of Cable Bahamas hoping to have 3ABN aired in all Family Islands where cable service is provided. Needless to say, promises were made, costs for the services were worked out and dates were given for launching the program, but the hopes of many of our brethren were dashed when these promises were not met. Nevertheless, with persistency and perseverance, that which is so freely enjoyed in Nassau, Grand Bahama, Abaco and in Eleuthera will now be experienced by most of our Family Islands if not all. With Exuma now on, the next stop is San Salvador. This has been promised for later this month and will be followed by Long Island possibly in July. While the Conference does not have the final say as to the exact date the service will begin, we can continue to pray and negotiate to get the company to include 3ABN in the package for Inagua, Andros and all islands where cable is present.

Addition to Johnson Road Company The Johnson Road Company is happy to report the baptism of one precious soul. To God be the glory. Please continue to pray for the new believers in Christ. -Pastor W. T. Adderley

Velinda and Eddie Rolle Share Christ in Andros  They live on the largest island in the Bahamas, Andros. Eddie Rolle, music teacher at the Central Andros High School, and Velinda, director of Andros Christian Academy, established the Academy in 2002. Eddie and Velinda, along with their two sons are faithful, vibrant Adventists in Andros.

After giving birth to two sons, the Rolles wanted to provide for them the best in Christian education. It was their desire to provide home school education. After much prayer and thought, Velinda decided to stay at home to teach their two children. The boys enjoyed it. Their development was fast and often proved to be ahead of many in their age group. Deep in the hearts of the Rolles was the thought that one day they would provide a home school program to include other students. However, by the time their sons were seven and ten years old, they were begging their parents for more interaction with other children and the honor of wearing school uniforms. They wanted to go to a regular school, although they were excited about being taught at home. Eddie and Velinda presented this matter to God in prayer. What should they do? Little did they know that their prayers would be answered with a simple phone call.

One day, just after praying, the phone rang. When they answered, the person on the other end of the line said, "I have a pre-school that will be closing, and I would like for you to take it over." Velinda jumped high within her heart. That was an answer to prayer. The phone call came in August of 2002. Two weeks later, the Andros Christian Academy began. Their two sons were happy. They now had friends to play with. The school began with the Rolles' two boys and twelve other students. They were now excited about wearing the school's uniform. Today, their Academy has 21 students. Their sons are the oldest in the school. The curriculum of the school is based on the same home-school curriculum the Rolles have been using with their sons, the Alpha Omega Academy Home School Curriculum. The students learn at their own pace and receive stimulating, interactive teaching. From their trained and committed teacher, Velinda Rolle.

Also for the past three years, Eddie and Velinda have been conducting a summer day camp called Camp RRICH (Camp Respect Responsibility Industry Caring and Health). Each summer about twenty children participate. The camp involves nature study, hikes, field trips and lots of interaction among the students. Everyday they visit a body of water, caves, or go boating and canoeing . It is an outdoor, fun time, adventure. The camp is held at the Forfar Field Station, a complete international research center. The operators allow the Rolles to use all the facilities.

Velinda and Eddie Rolle are active not only in their community, but they are also very active in the Lowe Sound Adventist Church. Eddie is the musician and Velinda is the choir director and the Children’s Ministries Director. They are a vital force in the church and community. We thank God for the dedication of Eddie and Velinda and request that you pray for them and their ministry in Andros.
