Times of Uncertainty! What to Do?

Most, if not all, of the financial indicators and experts reveal that the times ahead will be times of uncertainty.  What is the child of God to do in this type of climate?  Those who study God’s word on a daily basis know that He never leaves us in a state of uncertainty;  for He has promised never to leave or forsake us.  We always find solace and the answers to our most perplexing questions in His word, the Bible, and the Spirit of Prophecy.

The wisest man that ever lived, King Solomon, reminds us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).  God is an expert on the human condition. Even before we ask him, He knows what we need.  He knows we need His help in making important monetary decisions and in keeping our financial houses in order.

Solomon continues in Proverbs 6:6-8, “Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.” A quick check of others versions, make the point much more salient.

We are encouraged not to wait until times of uncertainty to start to do something about it.  We should not wait for the hurricane season to begin preparations, we should prepare now!!  Our lifestyle should be one of prudence.  We should always live below our means.  We should save at least 10% of our income each time we receive it for times of uncertainty.  Remember the ant!

As we think about spending we should have several key elements in focus.  We should ask ourselves a few questions to assist in guiding our purchases:  (1) Do I really need this?  (2) Is the price reasonable?  (3) Is this the best time of year to buy?  (4) If this is a bargain, is it a current or suitable model?  (5) If it’s on sale, is the price a true sale?  (6) Am I sure no less-expensive item can be substituted? (7) Am I sure there are no major disadvantages?  (8) If excessive in price, will it truly satisfy an inner need? (9) Have I comparison-shopped for price and quality? (10) Have I allowed for this item in my spending plan?

The Bible is full of sound advice about money matters. It even cautions us not to be so concerned about money that we seriously neglect other important aspects of our life. Our dependence is to be on God and not on money.  Jesus said, “For where your treasure is there your heart will be also.”  This is a warning given to us in Matthew 6:21. Is your heart and your treasure focused primarily on things of this life, or on God in heaven?   - Kenny Deveaux Stewardship and Trust Director

Women’s Ministries of  Philadelphia Church adopts Home for Boys   “If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.” James 1:26 – 27. With this mandate in mind, this year the Women’s Ministries Department of the Philadelphia Adventist Church took on as one of their community service projects, Colby Home for Boys located in Ridgeland Park West.  After an assessment of their needs, it was found that house ware such as plates, table cloths, irons were needed.  Therefore, the women went shopping (as women love to do!) and bought the requested items.

On Sabbath February 23, 2008, the Administrator of the Home, Mrs. Marion Taylor, along with two residents attended our church service and afterwards a presentation was given to them.  They were also treated to a sumptuous fellowship meal.

The Philadelphia Church intends to continue and strengthen our relationship with the Home.
