Regional Day of
Prayer and Fasting
Today is a special day for Adventists in the Bahamas and throughout West
Indies Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. The following communication
from the office of our Union President explains the significance of this first
Sabbath in the month of March:
"The Seventh-day Adventist Church has declared Saturday, March 5, 2005, a
day of Prayer and Fasting for Jamaica, the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands and
Turks and Caicos Islands.
The entire membership of these islands which make up the territory of West
Indies Union Conference are being called to unite in praying to the Lord to
bring about a spiritual revolution and stem the rising tide of crime and
violence.
This special appeal is made to coincide with the worldwide observance of
the Annual International Women's Day of Prayer on the first Sabbath in March.
In an appeal to all members of the 724 congregations in the territory, Pastor
Patrick Allen, President of West Indies Union Conference said, ‘We are deeply
troubled by the runaway state of crime and violence, and we must address the
matter with the weapon that is primary to our warfare - PRAYER AND FASTING.’
Apart from the appeal to the membership, Pastor Allen is also extending an
open invitation to all Government representatives, business and community
leaders and friends to participate in the service in their local communities."
We applaud the leadership of our union for taking this initiative that
shows concern for the wellbeing of the people in this region. Therefore, we
invite the members of the churches in the Bahamas Conference to join the
members of the other fields in our union in this special Day of Prayer and
Fasting. We believe that this call for prayer and fasting comes at an
appropriate time for us in the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. The frequency of
serious crime and violent behaviour in our country is of great concern to all
law-abiding citizens. It is evident that the enemy of our souls, the Devil, is
working over time to destroy the peace and harmony of our society. The
Government is doing its best to maintain law and order, but additional help is
needed. Supernatural help is needed; and the most effective means of getting
this help is through prayer and fasting.
Jesus said that there are some difficult problems that can be remedied only
by prayer and fasting. Now the prayer and fasting is not a magic formula that
solves our problems, but it conditions us to stay in tune with the will of
God. Thus, the barriers to the free working of the Holy Spirit are removed,
and God can intervene on our behalf.
Sacred history and the record of persons who fasted and prayed to God for
help in challenging situations confirm the effectiveness of sincere prayer and
fasting. Joshua prayed and the sun stood still. Hannah prayed, and God gave
her a son. The early church prayed, and Peter was freed from prison. One
colporteur prayed, and he was saved from drowning in a flood. Miracles happen
when God’s people pray; and greater things happen when they fast and pray.
Every student of the Bible is familiar with the passage of Scripture in 2
Chronicles 7:14 which says: "If my people, which are called by my name, shall
humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked
ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal
their land."
As God’s people, we should take advantage of the opportunity to petition
the God of heaven and earth on behalf of our nation. The God who answered the
prayers of His people in times past is the same God that we serve. He is
willing and able to answer our prayers today. Let us approach His throne of
grace boldly to obtain help in our time of need.
May this day be a day of miracles for the people of God in our Commonwealth
and throughout the islands of our region.

About Global Mission Seventh-day Adventists have taken to heart the
gospel commission found in Matthew 28 to go and teach all nations and baptize
them. As a result the Seventh-day Adventist church has grown into a worldwide
organization with a presence in more than 200 countries. This desire to share
the gospel is born out of genuine .
Global Mission was born out of a desire to take the message of Jesus' lov
Christian love for our fellow human beings and the desire to share the hope
that comes from a relationship with Jesus Christ e to the people and areas of
the world that had not yet heard the gospel. It was launched at the
Seventh-day Adventist world convention held in Indianapolis in 1990, when
international delegates voted for a special initiative to reach these
unreached areas.
The office of Global Mission has established study centers to foster
relationships and understanding with the major world religions--Buddhism,
Hinduism, Judaism, and Islam. Another study center focuses on building bridges
to postmodern/secular people.
The key component of Global Mission is the pioneer program. Global Mission
pioneers are Adventist lay people who
Volunteer at least a year to establish a new congregation
Live and work within their own culture
Establish new groups of believers
Understand the culture
Speak the local language
Help people with physical and spiritual needs
Receive a small stipend and cost far less than overseas missionaries
Today, tens of thousands of Global Mission pioneers are working around the
world, leading the way in taking the name of Jesus to people--often in
extremely challenging areas.
The Adventist Church faces two major mission challenges today--the 10/40
Window and the growing secular/postmodern population, particularly in urban
areas.
