Pathfinder Promise Highlighted at Youth Rally
Accompained
by their own band, the Pathfinders participated in a brisk march from
the Centreville Seventh-day Adventist Church to the Grant's Town
Adventist Church, Wellington Street, shortly after 4:30 p.m., Saturday,
May 5, 2007. The Pathfinders and other church members assembled in the
parking lot just east of the Grant's Town Church for an informative
Youth Rally that highlighted the work of Pathfinder Promise in the local
community. This innovative outreach idea was conceived by Natasha
Ruffin, a member of the Pathfinder organization. It is a pilot programme
funded by a special grant from Caricom.
Several guest speakers brought greetings and commended the Adventists
and coordinators of Pathfinder Promise (Natasha Ruffin, Delkisa Wood,
and Erica Perpall) for their effort in providing education regarding
HIV/AIDS, promoting the need to care for and support affected persons,
and trying to eliminate discrimination against them. Evaluator of the
Pathfinder Promise programme, Dr. Joan Rolle, and Caricom Youth
Ambassadors from the Ministry of Youth, Ms. Alana Kemp and Mr. John
Darville were very generous with their praise for the programme.
The main speaker for the afternoon, Hon. Sen. Dr. Bernard Nottage,
pointed out that although it is difficult to address AIDS Stigma, it
must be addressed. He said that the best way to deal with the AIDS
stigma is through education: "knowing about the virus and how to prevent
it." However, he said that "the difficulty arises in the area of
implementation." We must come to the realization that "prejudice and
discrimination against people perceived to be HIV positive is wrong."
While he credited various non government organizations for their
contribution to the success in our fight against AIDS, he was of the
view that "there is need to involve civic groups, service organizations,
fraternities and sororities specifically to establish organizations to
assist in funding the many facets of education and training needed."
Dr. Nottage emphasized that discrimination does not protect one against
HIV. We must "learn the facts, get tested and get involved." It should
be noted that "abstinence is the only guaranteed way to prevent sexual
transmission of HIV."
It is believed that the Pathfinder Promise initiative will be
implemented in other Caribbean countries.
Bahamas Academy
Elementary Honours Convocation The
Elementary Division of Bahamas Academy of Seventh-day Adventists held
its 2007 Honours Convocation on Thursday, May 3, 2007, at 7;00 p.m. at
the Church of God Auditorium, Joe Farrington Road. Parents and
supporters of the Academy were in attendance to witness the presentation
of awards to the students for success in academics and other aspects of
school life.
Dr. Leonard Johnson, Chairman of the School Board, and Dr. John Carey,
Director of Education for the Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day
Adventists, congratulated the students and staff for their achievements.
The guest speaker for the occasion, Dr. Michael Toote, Pastor of Johnson
Road Company and the Breath of Life Church, delivered a stimulating
message on the topic, "Success Is Mine." He told the students that God
wanted them to succeed. Then he gave them four steps to success and told
them that they would do well to say, "If it is to be, it's up to me."
The following are the four steps that Dr. Toote presented:
1. Dream. Think about what you want to be or do, and don't settle for
small stuff.
2. Action. Take action regarding your dream - not just any kind of
action. Your action should be in agreement with your dream.
3. Respect. Respect yourself and others; for being successful in life
has a lot to do with how you treat other people. You should treat people
fairly, and show them that they are appreciated.
4. Endurance. Get over the little things that annoy in life. Keep your
hands to the plough and don't look back. Remember that there are forces
that are ready to snatch away your dream. However, hold fast to your
ideals and you will succeed.
Every conscientious person should follow these steps in order to become
all that God wants us to be. The response from the audience indicated
their enthusiastic acceptance of the speaker's remarks.
Vacation Bible School
Workshop Review On Sunday April 29th
2007, Children’s Ministry
Directors
and volunteers gathered at the Hillview SDA church to participate in a
2007 Vacation Bible School (VBS) workshop.
Mrs. Diane Jones, Children’s Ministry Director for The Bahamas
Conference of SDA and her Team facilitated a day in the life of a camper
at the “Avalanche Ranch”. Participants, including both adults and
children, got a taste of the exciting VBS that will be hosted in our
churches this summer.
Mrs. Jones organized sample stations for all of the lower division
including Cradle Roll, Kindergarten, Primary and Juniors- and
participants with specific interest in each area rotated as a group from
station to station. Playing the role of children at VBS, attendees
experienced sing along time, crafts, tasty snacks, Bible adventure and
fun games. We all laughed at ourselves while we played along with the
facilitators, swinging our pretend lassos and shouting “Wahoo” every
time we heard the phrase “God is Real!”
By the end of the morning we were all tingling with excitement realizing
that if we, the adults, could have fun at VBS surely the kids should
have a blast. I have very little experience with planning VBS, so as a
rookie team member having this type of hands on experience was quite
enriching.
As VBS counselors, we are charged and ready to go. And go we must and
right away because last minute rushing will only frustrate the VBS
volunteers and the children. A successful VBS requires a great deal of
planning, an energetic and committed team and a compassionate treasury
department!
So grab your ten gallon hat, pull up your cowboy boots and start working
on your Texan accent because this summer our kids will be taking a wild
ride at the Avalanche Ranch. WAHOOO!!! -Andria Musgrove

them is to prosper, be in health and finally save their souls.

Plan For Me in The 21st Century and Beyond". This took the form of 13
questions from the Bible that traced the fundamental aspects of
Stewardship from "creation to present".

using Dr. McMillan's book "12 Baskets of economic Survival" as the
