Director/Speaker Visits the Bahamas
On Tuesday of next week, a team of Voice of
Prophecy personnel headed by its director/speaker Pastor Lonnie Melashenko
will visit the Bahamas. See VOP Web Ministry
Accompanied by his wife, Jeannie Melashenko, Pastor Walter Arties, Del
Delker and Phil Draper, pianist, Pastor Melashenko will serve as featured
speaker in a series of services commencing on Wednesday, May 22 at 7:15 p.m.
at the Hillview Church. Additionally, Pastor Melashenko will present the main
address at a service marking the official opening of the Adventist Audio and
Video Studio and the recommissioning of the Bible School. Elizabeth Moses, the
second secretary of the Voice of Prophecy Bible school, since its inception in
the Bahamas, will cut the ribbons.
It is anticipated that the visit of the Voice of Prophecy team would be
gratifying for many of its radio
listeners. In fact, the VOP broadcast is
possibly the longest continuous radio religious program in the Bahamas and is
aired weekly on ZNS 1540. For over 50 years thousands of Bahamians have been
blessed through the ministry of Pastor H. M. S. Richards Sr., founder, Pastor
H. M. S. Richards Jr. and currently, Lonnie Melashenko.
During his stay, Pastor Melashenko and local conference administrators will
pay a courtesy call on the Governor-General and the management of the
Broadcasting Corporation.
Del Delker, a long-serving singing artist, and Pastor Walter Arties,
responsible for Evangelism, will render special music at each service.
All of the services are opened to members and visitors. Members are
encouraged to invite neighbors and friends. Bible lessons will be available
for persons interested.
Once again, we remind you that services will be held on Wednesday, Thursday
and Friday evenings. There will also be a Sabbath afternoon service. All of
these will be held at the Hillview Church on Harrold Road.

Academy Elementary Honors Convocation 2002 Herbert Hoover once said
"children are our most valuable natural resource." Realizing this to
be true and wanting to encourage academic excellence, BA Elementary held the
annual Honors Convocation on Sunday, April 28th, 2002, at the
Church of God Auditorium, Joe Farrington Road.
Hundreds of expectant students, anxious parents, relatives and friends made
their way in the cool of the evening to the beautifully decorated auditorium.
On cue, Dr. John Carey, Education director of the Bahamas Conference of SDA
welcomed the large expectant audience, the principal, Mrs. Estherlean Ash in
her brief opening remarks, applauded the teachers for their commitment,
commended the parents for their support and congratulated the students for
their outstanding performances and encouraged them to continue to work hard.
Lashan Brown and Dannia Clarke set the stage for the evening’s proceedings
by thrilling the audience with their melodious renditions.
The Bahamas Conference was represented by a high-level team of
officials headed by the President, Pastor K. D. Albury, who delivered the
timely keynote address. He drew from the stories of blind poet Helen Keller
and world renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson and urged the students to
use their "big brains" to shine as lights and strive for academic
excellence.
Finally came the moment everyone was waiting for: the presentation of
awards . The K5 students received from their teachers packages with ribbons
and certificates denoting mastery in their large and fine motor skills,
cognitive, social and spiritual development. The grades 1 to 6 students who
achieved A, A-, B+ and B averages were awarded trophies. The boys and girls,
bedecked in their finery, walked proudly to center stage as their names were
called to collect their trophies while proud parents were eagerly waiting to
catch the "Kodak" moments.
Vice-principal Mrs. Hermia Brown presented the Special Awards to the
students who gained top positions in their classes and those who excelled in
Spots, Music, Computer and drama. Honesty trophies were also given to students
who found monies and other valuables on the school campus and reported them.
The evening’s program climaxed with the vote of thanks by grade 6 student
Michelle Toote, followed by the benediction by Pastor E. D. Clarke. And thus
it was, that Honours Convocation 2002 went into history.-Carol Jackman/Chloe

BSDAEA
Educational Seminar On April 14, 2002, at 9 a.m. educators of the
Bahamas SDA Educators’ Association convened at the Annex of the Philadelphia
Church, Elizabeth Estates, to attend the 2nd annual Educators’
Seminar held under the theme "Empowered to Meet the Challenges of
Education."
The session began with a devotional period by Pastor W. T. Adderley. His
discourse was centered on "A New Vision, Breaking the Cycle." To do
this, he told the participants that they must see all children as their flock.
With Christ’s power, they can win against insurmountable odds.
Colyn Major, Vice-president for Student Affairs of the College of the
Bahamas, in his presentation on "Stress Management", emphasized that
stress is a fact of life and we must learn to transfer our stresses to the
Lord Jesus and not to internalize them. He described stress as putting garbage
in a can that is never emptied. As a result, too much stress leads to ill
health. Seventy percent of all doctors’ visits are stress related. Those who
are exposed to high anxiety are four to five times more likely to die of
stokes.
He quoted Murphy’s Law - "Anything that can go wrong, will go
wrong." What is needed is a change in one’s perception of how one sees
things. Stress can be used to motivate one to pursue goals. It can be utilized
as a means of pushing on in the right direction, says Mr. Major. He gave
several suggestions as to how to relieve stress. They can be placed under the
following headings - anticipate situations, be proactive, eat and dress
properly, exercise and learn to say NO!
Dr. John Carey, Education Director of the Bahamas Conference of SDA, made
brief remarks to the assembly, expressing his appreciation for the seminar as
it sought to improve its members. Dr. Sonia Higgs, Head of the Behavioural
Management unit at Social Services, made a timely presentation on the Legal
Aspects of Education and the Safe School document. She listed the factors that
led to the development of the Safe School Document such as; children who defy
authority, abuse drugs or are abused and are sexually active.
She explained that the document provides the school system with guidelines
on how to discipline problem students. It is to protect legally all the
stakeholders in the system. It is not a restrictive document but rather it
empowers teachers and administrators in the following areas: it makes
punishment commensurate with the infraction, it allows teachers to document
repetitive behaviours and it allows for police involvement when necessary. It
steers away from corporal punishment as a solution, for it suggests violence
as a means of dealing with conflict.
Dr. Higgs further stated that although the document does not address every
disciplinary issue, it does allow the system to discipline with dignity. She
added that the only way the Safe School Document will work is if all the
teachers buy into it.
To conclude the presentations was Mrs. Ella Collie, Principal at Columbus
Primary School who spoke on the Psychology of Teaching and Learning. She
started her presentation with a quote from Henry Adams, "A teacher
affects eternity." She acknowledges that something wrong is occurring at
school and the Philosophy and teaching strategies have to be re-examined.
Teaching is more than a job but a calling; it should promote more than the
3Rs, but also good values. Discipline and temperance should be taught. She
stated that the discipline the teachers receive depends upon the type of
person the teacher is.
She listed some teaching strategies to enhance learning in the classroom.
Participants were allowed to role play various school situations and their
solutions. The participants found this exercise most delightful.
A special thank you to all the presenters who took time out of their busy
schedules to facilitate the seminar. Gratitude also to Sis. Pansy
Hamilton-Brown and her team for developing this seminar. Finally thanks to
those who contributed the light refreshments. -Darlene Edwards

Indies Union Youth Ministries Weekend
Thousands of youth from all territories of our Union, Jamaica,
Bahamas, Cayman and Turks and Caicos, and from the USA flocked to Northern
Caribbean University for the first ever West Indies Union Youth Ministries
Weekend. Pastor Balvin Braham and his team of Youth Directors, namely Pastor
E. D. Clarke [Bahamas], Pastor Reynaldo Drackett [Cayman], Pastor Michael
Harvey [West Jamaica], Pastor Michael Henry [Central],
Pastor P. Kerr [Turks & Caicos],Pastor G. P. Williams [East Jamaica],
and their Youth Leaders and the team at NCU must be congratulated for a job
well done. All weekend the youth were reminded to be trend setters in all that
they do and everywhere they go. Pastor Braham, Pastor G. P. Williams and Dr.
Patrick Allen, Union President, all encouraged our young people and reminded
them that they are indeed a peculiar people and they must continue to keep up
the standards of God and the Church.
The Sabbath School was different in every way and those responsible did a
great job with presenting the marriage and the second coming of our Lord and
Savior. Music for the weekend was the best and the Music Festival for me was
the Highlight of the Weekend, where choirs, groups and soloists came from all
over to present good items for the church service. The sporting activities,
the drill and band displays also drew huge crowds, and at the end of the day,
every Trendsetter left with a good feeling. This Youth Weekend, I am sure,
will continue because it has the support of our Union and all of the
Conferences and Missions involved. I encourage all of our young people and
older ones to continue to be trendsetters and examples as you spread the
message to the entire world.
The Bahamas delegation was small, but everyone knew that Ray Jennings,
Rohan Creighton, Elvardo Perpall, Alfred Styles and Curtis Bryan were there,
and of course we did set the trend for all to follow. Our hosts for the
weekend were Drs. Wendell and Althea McMillan, Alfred Styles stayed at the
home of Pastor Ronnie and Pat Henry, and to them we are most grateful. Our
Students at NCU who assisted in making the Weekend a success are Etosha
Rahming, Anistacia Forbes, Johnette Brown and Valentino Campbell. On Sabbath,
we invited everyone over to the McMillans’ home for a real Bahamian meal and
that was a great time of fellowship. -C. Bryan
