Bahamas Academy Is
On The Move Again
Congratulations
go out to
Bahamas Academy students
for winning the top award for their proposal to spend $108,000.00 in the
recent Financial Investment Competition. This fact was highlighted in the
daily newspapers on Wednesday, May 16, 2007. We salute the principal, Mr.
Anthony Burrows, the other Administrators, Miss Larene Reynolds, (project
coordinator), Staff and Students of a great institution. We salute those
Alumni and supporters of Bahamas Academy who make all of us proud to be
associated with this noble institution.
On behalf of the conference, president Dr.
Leonard A. Johnson extend thanks to members who have assisted, particularly
with fundraising, over the many years. Some persons have supported through
Volunteers Bahamas Adventist (VBA) at $5 per month or other regular monthly
contributions including the Adventure in Faith program that was launched in
January 2007.
There are currently a number of other planned
financial programs going on. These include a Block Drive, T-shirt Day,
Silent Auction, Bahamas Academy Weekend, Celebrity Basketball Game and an on
campus Stationary Depot. We are encouraging all members to make an
investment by contributing $1.00 per day towards this necessary undertaking.
The benefits of attending Bahamas Academy are far reaching. It provides
quality, Christian education. Promoting high standards of excellence, and
preparing students for service now and for eternity, the academy is
committed to helping students develop character through a personal
relationship with Jesus Christ.
The construction of the New Bahamas Academy is
well on its way. We anticipate the completion of the Secondary School by
August 2008. This is possible, if all of us unite to do our part. Please
feel free to contact the school, the conference or the leadership of our
churches to offer assistance.
We are all committed to speaking positively to ensure the success of the
divine blueprint for education, which is one with redemption. -Pastor
Eric D. Clarke, Executive Secretary
Collegiality Still Works
According to 1 Peter 3:8, collegiality still works in the
Christian community. "Be of one mind, love as brethren," writes the apostle
Peter to the scattered brethren.
Collectively,
over one hundred and fifty Seventh-day Adventists, representing the Personal
Ministries, Sabbath School and Community Services department of the local
churches, assembled at Hillview Seventh-day Adventist Church for an in-depth
look at departmental function, personal responsibilities and mission. Pastor
Joseph Smith and Sister Vivienne Quarrie, Director and Associate Director of
Personal Ministries, Sabbath School and Community Services for the West
Indies Union, ably conducted a weekend of seminars, May 11 - 13, 2007.
The Union personnel electrified and informed
the participants with a detailed look into "Tell the World," the current
focus and initiative of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Strategic issues
and plans for addressing the issues were presented in a simple yet profound
manner. Record keeping as a tool of accountable reporting received extensive
treatment. For, too many churches actively engage in missionary activities,
yet are derelict in their duties to report. So, by voice and print details
on filling the Personal Ministries, Sabbath School and Community Services
forms were provided. Every church is encouraged to organize the Sabbath
School classes into Sabbath School Action Units. (Community Services issues
also received attention. In particular, the upcoming Community Services
Congress in Jamaica was addressed. It was made absolutely clear that every
first Sabbath the emphasis must be witnessing. This is a voted action of the
West Indies Union).
Collegiality still works. Local directors,
Pastor Peter Joseph, Pastor Wilfred Adderley and Pastor Paul Scavella
provided meaningful support to the union personnel. Moreover, the
Administrators, Pastor Leonard Johnson, Pastor Eric D. Clarke and Elder C.
Melvin Lewis gave strong support by their consistent presence. Remarkably,
several pastors and their wives enthusiastically attended. Anecdotally, I
believe that a positive correlation exists between the number of leaders
attending a departmental seminar and local attendees from the churches.
Collegiality faces two barriers. These are structure and attitude (Johnson
1990 p. 11). Let us not isolate ourselves in the structure and develop
negative and narcissistic attitudes to opportunities for interaction and
togetherness.
We are brethren. Ellen White (1948) writes,
"Let every department of our work, every institution connected with our
cause, be conducted on considerate, generous lines. Let every branch of the
work, while maintaining its own distinctive character, seek to protect,
strengthen and build up every other branch …. Each worker must give his own
branch special effort; but it is the privilege of each to study and labor
for the health and welfare of the whole body of which he is a member" (7T.
174). We can function and exist as a whole through the interaction of the
various parts (I Cor. 12:1-31). -Pastor Peter Joseph, Ministerial,
Personal Ministries and Sabbath School Director
Week of Prayer Results in Baptism at Bahamas Academy
On May 16, 2007, students of Bahamas Academy Secondary and Elementary

Adventist church for the culmination of the Weeks of Prayer held in March.

Like Jesus" at the elementary school's Week of Prayer held March 19 - 23.
Pastor Barrington Brennen conducted the Week of Prayer for the secondary
school March 26 - 30th under the theme "Last Day Events". He led the
students into an in-depth look at prophecies of Revelation and their
relevance to today's believer. After further study of God's word with Ms.
Ferguson six students expressed their willingness to publicly surrender
their lives to our Savior in baptism. They were warmly welcomed at Living
Faith church by the host pastor, Paul Scavella. To God be the glory!
