Teachers’ Appreciation Week at Adventist Academies
Once again it is that time of the year when teachers are targeted for special recognition. I am pleased to join parents, students, and the faithful supporters of Christian education in expressing appreciation to ALL Seventh-day Adventist teachers in the Bahamas Conference for their contribution to the educational development of our children and youth of our country this school year (2001 to 2002).

We appreciate you, teachers, because you are "special." This means that you are a cut above the ordinary. You are dedicated and capable professionals who have committed yourselves to the task of providing the best education to every student who comes under your influence. You have demonstrated a willingness to share your knowledge with your students in a caring and understandable manner.

During the school year, from time to time, you encountered various problems. Some of these appeared to be insurmountable, but with hard work and a co-operative spirit, you threw off your frustrations and worked out solutions.

And now you are just about ready to close this school year, and take the rest that you deserve. Undoubtedly, you earned it every day of the school year. Therefore, I hope that the summer holidays bring to you the rest, health and happiness that will prepare you for further service.

Thank you, teachers, for playing such a noble part in the Education Ministry. May the Lord bless and keep you always.- Dr. John Carey, Education Director

Kenya Evangelism Five pastors have been invited to conduct a crusade in Kenya, Africa. They are Jeremiah Duncombe, T. Basil Sturrup, Roger Moncur, Gary C. King and Eric D. Clarke. These meetings (from May 26 to June 18, 2002) are co-ordinated by Elder Robert S. Folkenberg, former General Conference president, The North Carolina Conference and the Quiet Hour radio ministry. It is hoped that at the conclusion of these 1,600 crusades, we will experience the largest number of conversions to the truth in our world church. The crusades will all begin and end at the same time with massive baptisms at several sites. A number of lay persons are traveling in support of the ministers. These include Bursil Wallace and Bro and Sis. Keith Watson.  Members are encouraged to support this venture financially through the Conference.-E Clarke and J. Duncombe, pastors

AIDS Memorial Week May 18 to 25, 2002  The Health Education Division of the Ministry of Health is commemorating International Aids Memorial Day, which was celebrated on May 19, 2002. However, churches are encouraged to remember people who have died from HIV/AIDS or are living with the disease and their families.

"Breaking the cycle through support and care," the theme selected for this awareness week, seeks to suggest ways that your church could lend its support:

  • Hold a prayer vigil for those who have died from AIDS and their families.
  • Preach a sermon on tolerance and kindness towards people living with AIDS (PLWA).
  • Talk about HIV/AIDS topics during Bible study.
  • Become involved and informed, and hold special HIV prevention and educational programs for teenagers.
  • Encourage church members to volunteer at local HIV/AIDS centers. "If you have done it to the least of them, you have done it unto me. I was a stranger and you took me in, I was hungry and you fed me, I was naked and you clothed me." Matt. 25 v 35-40

Jesus never asked anyone how he/she got a disease. Can we do more? Can we afford to do less?

Churches can provide a climate of love, acceptance and support for those who are vulnerable to or affected by HIV/AIDS. -M. Mitchell, Health Educator, MOH
