Mother/Daughter Retreat
On Sabbath, May 22, 2004, the Women's Ministries Department of the Johnson Park Church held their third annual Mother/Daughter retreat at the campsite on Marshall Road under the theme "Caring Women In Partnership with God."

As the women arrived they met each other with hugs and greetings expressing their pleasure at being out in nature. It was a balmy day. The beautiful sea breezes and relaxed environment under the canopy of swaying trees set the tone for a deeply spiritual and introspective day with our Creator and Redeemer.

After a lovely song service and the usual preliminaries, our Sabbath School discussion on "Keeping Identity" was led by Sister Kathy Antonio. The portion of scripture focused on was Philippians 8:1-18. There we sought to identify the attitudes of Christ and how they could best be used to create strong families. Both mothers and daughters gave each other tips as to how they can best use these to enhance and not smother each other's identity and strengthen the family.

The Divine Service brought us a heavenly music as Lynn Smith and daughter, Nashanda performed a Mother and daughter duet. Mothers and daughters also read poems, scriptures and stories.

Marva Farquharson gave five steps to becoming a "caring woman"; She encouraged both mother and daughter to:

  1. Accept Christ and become the total person He want us to become (1Corinthians 5:17).

  2. Love as Christ loved, showing others that we know Him personally (1John 2:6, 9,16).

  3. Spend time with His Word and find ways to do His Will (Revelation 1:3).

  4. Pray continuously, (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

  5. Continue to find opportunities to share Jesus with others. (II Timothy 4:5)

She was powerful, thought provoking and stirred us to renewing our commitment to being mothers and daughters fit for His kingdom.

Lunch was a delightful experience. There was a large assortment of delicious dishes and desserts. We ate and relaxed. Some went for long walks, collecting rocks and shells. Others spread blankets and napped in the cool breeze while others sat around in small groups and fellowshipped. Laughter and snores blended beautifully.

Our final session was very informal but educational. Sister Lynn Smith facilitated the discussion on "Living with and nurturing teenage daughters." What an uplifting and lively session. We thank the older mothers for the wisdom shared, the younger mothers for the concerns and hopes shared and the daughters for the honesty and dreams that we were given a glimpse of.

As we brought this wonderful day to a close, we again thanked our God for His Presence in our midst throughout the day and promised to meet each other again in that same setting next year. -Kathy H. Antonio  JPC Women's Ministries Leader
