First Annual Bahamas Conference Women’s Retreat A Success
During the weekend of October 17-19, 2003, over 200 women took time out to nurture and replenish themselves emotionally, mentally, and spiritually at the First Annual Bahamas Conference National Women’s retreat held at South Ocean Resort, New Providence. With over 90 percent of the Family Islands represented, the women came from almost every pastoral district in the Conference. There was a spirit of anticipation and eagerness as the participants arrived Friday afternoon and greeted one another warmly.  See Web Page

That evening, the ladies gathered in the Papaguya Room where they were warmly greeted and welcomed to the retreat by Dr. Leonard A. Johnson, our Conference President. Under the leadership of Ursula Rolle, an enthusiastic praise team set the tone for the worship service that followed.

Our hearts were stirred as we sat and listened to the speaker for the weekend, Dr. Janice Browne, who in a soft but forceful voice, recounted the miracles God performed for her during the trip from Ethiopia to the Bahamas. Focusing on the theme "Ordinary Woman, Extraordinary Grace," she delivered a thought-provoking message on the awesomeness of God’s extended Grace toward us.

Excitement ran high on Sabbath morning, and the women were charged and fired up by Sharon Robinson’s devotional message during the early morning prayer and praise service. A colorful drama depicting how the lives of three noted Bible women were transformed when they met Jesus added to the excitement of the morning.

The high point of the Retreat was the powerful message presented by Dr. Browne during the Divine Worship on Sabbath. We were taken to a higher level of praise and worship as she dramatized the life story of the woman with the issue of blood and the many other related issues that weighed her down. Focusing on the many issues that face women today, Dr. Browne invited the women to take their concerns to the altar and leave them at the feet of Jesus, the Great Burden Bearer. Everyone present accepted the challenge and went forward in recommitment to Christ.

Sabbath afternoon two seminars, "Embracing and Accepting Each Other" and "Growing in Grace," were conducted by Eileen Sands

and Edith Roach, respectively. These topics gave the ladies the opportunity to share with each other in a most impressive way. Issues were discussed in a trusting, open and candid manner.

The Retreat concluded with a Prayer Breakfast on Sunday morning around the pool. Dr. Browne emphasized the need for women to show love and support for each other. Special prayers were offered, and inspiring testimonies were given before the Retreat ended with the singing of "Bind Us Together."

Thanks to the leaders and the committees that worked so hard to make the Retreat a success. Special thanks to guest soloists Nadia King, Portia Barnett, April Rahming, Stacy Campbell, and our musician, Cheryl Forbes. See you next year! -Miriam Knowles, WM Director

West Indies Union Departmental Directors Visit Bahamas Conference Pastor Basil Reid, accompanied by Pastor Derek Bignal (WIU Personal Ministries and Youth Directors, respectively), arrived in Nassau on Friday, October 24, 2003. Pastor Reid was the featured speaker at the beginning of the

"Super Sabbath" services at the Grant’s Town Church. He presented a powerful message that encouraged the members to "stay on the ship." During the Divine Service on Sabbath, he preached with power and clarity at the Centreville Church, while Pastor Bignal presented a stimulating message at the Berea SDA Church. At 4:00 o’clock that afternoon, at Grant’s Town, they conducted a "GO ONE MILLION" training session, which resulted in 146 persons signing up as lay workers.

Sunday morning at 8 o’clock, the training continued at the Centreville Church. Pastor Reid read Luke 9:57-62 and challenged the audience not to allow anything to deter them from fulfilling the Gospel Commission. Pastor Bignal shared from a youth perspective the importance of young people joining forces with others under God to carry the work forward.

Sunday afternoon they traveled with Pastor Sturrup (Personal Ministries Director of Bahamas Conference) to South Andros to conduct training and encourage the brethren on that island. Pastor Boateng (District Pastor) greeted the men at the dock as they arrived by ferry boat. The program began at 7:00p.m., and Pastor Bignal preached from the Book of Ephesians 6: 11-15 entitled, "No Bare Foot Soldiers." Pastor Reid then organized the congregation for the workshop. At the end of the service, 45 persons enrolled as Lay Workers in the cause of God.

Monday Afternoon they said goodbye and traveled to the North Bahamas Mission to continue to train and prepare more persons for Christian service.

Moses Accepted Support  In this Pastor's Appreciation Month within the Bahamas Conference, we continue what last week's Logos introduced. There are two continuous and wonderful things members can do for their pastors. Keep bringing souls to them to be baptized (not just waiting for crusades) and continue to pray for them fervently. As pastors we must embrace the efforts and prayers of our congregations with joy and gratitude. The following is modified from the North Caribbean Conference: One of the most successful leaders of the Bible was Moses. He was called by God, commissioned by God, and received audible as well as visual confirmation from God concerning his leadership. However, as endowed as this "man of God" was, he opened his heart and mind to positive and helpful support and counsel from others.

1. Jethro advised him of the importance of delegation and division of labour.

2. Zipporah (his wife) stepped forward to save his life and personally cared for their son by performing the then required act of circumcision.

3. Joshua accompanied him up the mountain to meet with God.

4. Aaron and Hur supported and held up his arms in the battle against the Amalekites until the victory was decisively won. Ellen White makes this pointed statement: "Happy [is] the minister who has a faithful Aaron and Hur to strengthen his hands when they become weary and to hold them up by faith and prayer. Such a support is a powerful aid to the servant of Christ in his work and will often make the cause of truth to triumph gloriously." (Testimonies to the Church, volume 4, p. 531) As we begin the month of November, let's be supportive and help "make the cause of truth to triumph gloriously." Ministerial Department

Education Corner/Parenting Seminar  Think about this-we need a license from the proper authorities before we can get married; we need a license before we can drive a car; we need a license to operate a business. However, no license or training is required before a baby is brought into this world and raised in society! Isn't that amazing? And raising children is one of the most difficult, time-consuming, and mind-boggling things we will ever do in this life. Yes, raising children can also be rewarding. But there are days when we ask ourselves what were we thinking to bring these "miniature people" into our homes!

How much training did you have when your children were born? Probably only what you read in a book, or picked up from the "old folks". More than likely, you raised your children just how you were raised. Maybe that's good; maybe that's not so good. In any event, raising children how we were raised doesn't work in this 21st century. Children are different. The Bible even says they are "wiser but weaker". The influences on a child's life are different. The situations children are exposed to today are different. The things parents have to deal with today can cause one to lose his/her sanity.

Parents can use all the help they can get. So why not register today for the upcoming Parenting Seminar being planned and sponsored by Bahamas Academy. The seminar begins this coming Thursday, November 6 at the Wyndham Resorts & Crystal Palace, Cable Beach starting promptly at 7:00 p.m. The Hon. Melanie Griffin, Minister of Social Services & Community Development will bring greetings, and the opening session will be conducted by Dr. Ava Thompson, clinical psychologist.

We need everyone who is planning to attend to register before Thursday night. This will ensure that you receive the materials and a name badge. The name badge must be worn to all sessions, especially on Sabbath when a meal will be provided. Also, we don't want to deal with money during the Sabbath hours so it's vital that you register by Tuesday, November 4 the latest. Even though late registration will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the hotel, we want all our people to register early so that we can make sure the hotel has enough chairs and food to accommodate everyone. Sessions continue on Friday night at 7:00 p.m., and on Sabbath morning beginning at 9:30 a.m. You can't afford to miss the sessions on Sabbath!

If you are a parent, a prospective parent, a grandparent raising children, or someone planning to have children sometime in the future, you must attend these sessions. The information, training, and techniques you will receive are priceless. God expects us to take advantage of the knowledge available to His people today so that we can have a better quality of life.

You can register at either division of the school or at the Adventist Book Centre. We are so anxious for you to attend, we will even pick up your registration form and fee if you call us at 394-0094. Don't miss this opportunity-you may not get another chance to better your parenting skills.- Lynn C. Smith, Principal
