- Children
Celebrate in Worship
Today
has been declared national Children’s Day in our Conference. I salute
all of our children on this your day. Our Lord Jesus stated in Matthew
18:3, "Except ye be converted and become as little children, ye shall
not enter into the kingdom of heaven." Until children learn evil from
those who are older, they exhibit many of the traits of character that
anyone who desires to gain heaven must have.
As our children grow up, we should involve even the youngest in our
decision making processes. Of course they sometimes advance
out-of-this-world ideas, and we have to tactfully exercise our veto power.
But let us listen and frequently their motions, suggestions and plans can
be good, and we can learn many things. As this is practiced, our children
will be willing to listen to us.
Somehow, we adults get the idea that children have nothing
to teach us. After all, we were once
children and we ought to know. But the truth is that there are many spiritual
lessons we can learn from them. Says Ellen White, "the simplicity, the
self-forgetfulness, the confiding love of a little child are the attributes
that heaven values." (The Desire of Ages)
As we allow the truth to sink into our innermost
consciousness, we will come to recognize that all of our children come to us
as a gift from God. I implore all parents, guardians, teachers and everyone
who come in contact with our children to treat them with love. Display trust
and concern for them. Remember that they need our guidance every step of the
way.
Special welcome is extended to our special guests for this
weekend, the Evans triplet - Dexter, Devon and Denesha hail from North Andros.
They are twelve years-old and are an integral part of the Lowe Sound SDA
Church. Their ministry in music weekly continues to inspire and bless the
worshippers. I know that as you listen to them today that indeed you too will
be lifted heavenward. Thanks to Bro. Evans and especially their mother Linda
who is accompanying them for this special occasion today. May God continue to
bless their voices as they continue to sing for Jesus.
Tomorrow, November 24 our Children’s Banquet will be held
at the BCPOU Hall, Farrington Road, from 2 to 5 p.m. Tickets will not be
available at the door, therefore kindly see your local Children’s Ministries
Leader to secure your child’s seat.
Once again, congratulations to all of our children, the
directors, teachers and faithful parents as we celebrate in concert this
afternoon at 3:30 at the Hillview Church in our annual Children’s Musical
Extravaganza. –Rowena Smith, Director CM

Final Examinations. Very few people like to be evaluated for what they know
or do not know. Children are no different. They soon come to realize, however,
that examinations
are a reality of school life and will be for several more years to come. How
can parents help children get through these nail-biting experiences? Here are
some suggestions for getting your child ready for examinations:
1. Build your child's confidence. Praise your child whenever he/she puts
time and effort into homework assignments and/or projects. Praise him for the
hours put into a project or for a job well done even before he receives a
grade from the teacher.
2. Insist that your child write neatly and clearly. If you check his/her
work and you're not satisfied with the way it looks, ask him to do it over.
Teach him to be his own critic by looking over and reading his work before
turning it in. If this habit is developed in primary school, he will thank you
for it when he reaches secondary school. Teachers may mark something wrong if
they cannot make out what the child is saying.
3. Develop the habit of checking your child's books each night. Ask him
questions about work done that day based on what you read in his notebooks.
Clarify anything he may not be clear on and make sure he understands.
4. A good way to study Spelling words is to have the child WRITE the words
on a piece of paper as you say them. Most children need to SEE the words, not
just hear them.
5. The best way to study for Mathematics is to have the child practice
working similar problems on a piece of paper. If your child is in Grade 2 or
higher, make sure he knows his multiplication tables. Make a game with these
tables; have him use flash cards while in the car on the way to school. Word
problems in Math seem to present some challenges. The key to getting word
problems right is first to understand what the problem is asking the child to
do. Help him to "see" what the problem is asking.
6. Do not wait until the night before the examination to review. Ideally,
revision should take place each night. But revision should continue in
intensity at least a week or two before exams begin.
7. Help the child control his environment when studying. You can do this by
making sure the house is relatively quiet-turn off the radio and TV, and have
smaller children go to a different room.
8. Give your child a good breakfast before sitting exams. Studies prove
that children who eat a nutritious breakfast do better on examinations.
9. Ensure that your child has a good night's sleep the night before exams.
This may mean altering your schedule so that you get home earlier than usual.
Eight to ten hours sleep is best.
10. If your child is still nervous going into the exam room, remind him to
pray. The Lord has promised to bring back to his mind what he has studied.
