- Expressions
of Thanks to Crusade Supporters
Thanks!
Thanks! Thank you, my brothers and sisters, for the overwhelming support
you gave to the "Let God Speak Bible Campaign." Because of your
involvement and tremendous support, we have realized our three objectives:
to reach non-members, to reach former members, and to reach current
members. As a result of your concerted effort, four hundred precious souls
have been baptized during the past four weeks. I pray to God that we shall
view these newly baptized members as new babes needing our ongoing
prayers, visits and fellowship.
Thanks, also, for the strong financial support given to the crusade. On
the occasion of the special offering promotion, a total amount of $50,000
was collected. As promised, I am accounting to you as to its
apportionment. Twenty thousand dollars ($20,000) will go to the Early
Learning Center, thereby assisting with the completion of phase one and
phase two "b" by the end of November. Ten thousand dollars
($10,000) has been apportioned to each of the two new churches established
as a result of the crusade. Additionally, $1,500 was given to the Kemp's
Bay Church to assist with the ongoing construction. The difference was
used to supplement the crusade budget. However, because of the consistent
nightly offerings, our crusade expenses have been met. Thanks to you!
Thanks
to each pastor and member who supported the crusade in one or more of the
following areas: music, on the platform, transportation, Joshua team,
ushering, parking and security, audio and visual, Bible attendants,
translation, setting up and care of tents, food for the evangelist and new
believers, treasury and all others. I
salute, in particular, our coordinator, and each department head. We cannot
say enough thanks to Evangelist Nembhard. The name "Guy Nembhard"
will long be remembered in the Bahamas.
I urge that we continue to nurture all new believers as our
work has just begun. Also, words of encouragement to the pastors of the new
churches, Leo Rolle and Basil Sturrup, and their teams will go a long way in
building these bodies. Today, Pastor Rolle and the New Thompson Boulevard SDA
Church members are worshiping in the two storey white building north of the
Munnings Building on Nassau Street, where a Bahamasair Office is located.
Pastor Sturrup and the Gambier members are meeting at the Public school in
Gambier.
It may interest you to know that a baptismal record has
been set in our Conference; and for this we give glory to God! With such an
accomplishment, we in pastoral ministry are determined to reach our elusive
goal of 1,000 baptisms for 2003. Let's pray and work towards this end. As a
footnote, I applaud Lay Evangelist David Williams who spent three weeks in the
Philippines during September. Through him, God has led 28 souls to accept His
salvation. Also, I solicit prayers for Pastor Peter Joseph who traveled to
Guatemala to represent West Indies Union at the Satellite Evangelistic
Outreach.
Once again, on behalf of my administrative colleagues, I
say thanks for your support and thanks be to God for the success. hree
wonderful quarters. - Dr. Leonard A. Johnson, President, BC
Community Services/Pathfinder Exhibition - October
13th, 2003 All roads led to
the R.M. Bailey playing
field on Monday, October 13th, 2003 for the Annual Pathfinder and Community
Services Exhibition of the Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.
The opening ceremony began shortly after 11am with brief
remarks coming from Pastors Paul Scavella (Health Ministries Director); T.
Basil Sturrup (Community Services Director); our Energetic Youth Director,
Andrew Burrows, and Conference President Pastor Leonard Johnson, who cited the
importance of the three ministries working together for the betterment of our
community. He declared the Exhibition officially open and introduced our
special guest, Mr. Athama Bowe, Consultant to the Ministry of Youth who lauded
the praises of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in all of its programs,
especially in the areas of health reform and youth work. Furthermore, Mr. Bowe
said "the structure of the youth organization is an excellent one because
the development structure is one to be emulated".
Also bringing remarks was Permanent Secretary for the
Ministry of Youth, Mr. Harrison Thompson who praised the Pathfinders for being
the largest and most dynamic youth group, and added that the Ministry could
always depend on us to lead during National Youth Month. He encouraged us to
continue doing our part in the development of the youth in the Bahamas.
In collaboration with the Pathfinders, the exhibition this
year continued in the tradition of tastefully prepared vegetarian dishes, as
well as crafts and skills acquired through the commitment and discipline of
the Pathfinders. Competition was stiff and all participants are to be
commended for a job well done. Results were as follows:
- 1st Place, Johnson Park -1,483 pts.
- 2nd Place, Hillview -1,389.5 pts.
- 3rd Place, Breath of Life -763 pts.
- 4th Place, Living Faith -455 pts.
- 5th Place, Grant’s Town -335.5 pts.
Although the Pathfinder competitions were exciting, the
highlight of the Exhibition was indeed the Hillview Drum Corps, which no doubt
left many speechless with a spectacular demonstration. We salute the Hillview
Drum Corps. and Bro. Ray Jennings for their hard work that truly paid off on
Monday. A note of gratitude goes out to all who planned and supported this
year's Pathfinder and Community Services Exhibition, especially our Community
Services and Pathfinder Coordinators and Directors, particularly Elvardo
Perpall, Camille Sylvester, Ray Jennings, Lester Stuart, Randy Johnson,
Marilyn Bonamy, Estelle Gibson, Sherry Burrows, and Louis Cleare. Thanks are
also extended to our judges, Elder C. Melvin Lewis, Sis. Denise Johnson, Sis.
Laverne Sturrup, and Bro. Audley Mitchell and special thanks to Philip Humes
for always extending himself beyond the call of duty making these events a
great success. We look forward to more participation and good Christian
fellowship next year. Start preparing now.-Sherry Burrows, Eastern Region

Education Corner (This weekly
column is sponsored by Bahamas Academy of S.D.A.) A
mother once asked a child psychologist this question: "I am a single
mother of a four-year-old girl. Recently quite a few people have made the
comment that my child is spoiled. They say I give in to her and baby her too
much. Could it be that by worrying so much about not being a good enough mom,
I may have gone overboard? I know that I give in to her often, but after
hearing her whine and cry, I can only take so much. Am I raising a spoiled
child? If so, what can I do about it now? I love my child, but maybe I have
loved her too much."
How would you answer that mother? Here is my five cents.
Many parents, especially single parents, equate indulgence, attention, instant
gratification, and buying "things" with love. Because of our
fast-paced lifestyle, many parents don't have the time to spend with their
children. This makes them feel guilty, so when the child asks for something,
the parent gives in, knowing that the item is probably not the best for the
child but he gets it to "prove" her love as a parent.
I feel that many Bahamian parents who are raising children
in the 21st century are also guilty of giving in to children's wishes too
often. Why? Because when they (the parents) were younger, their parents
couldn't afford these items and they were told "no". Now that these
young people have grown up, they have had more opportunities than their
parents to get a college education and better-paying jobs. So they
"shower" their children with everything money can buy just because
they can afford it.
What we are doing is raising a generation of children who
are spoiled--a generation of children who can't appreciate the value of money,
who aren't learning what responsibility is, and whose characters are being
ill-formed. When these children enter school, they find it hard to relate to
restrictions and rules in the school environment because they are allowed to
do as they please at home. What will happen when these children become adults
and move out on their own into society?
Small children throw temper tantrums because we allow them
to every time we give in to their whining and crying. We need to say
"no", mean it, and stick to it! One way to handle this is to prepare
the child ahead of time if you have to go into a store. Let her know that you
won't be buying anything for her today so she should not ask. You can even
promise her a treat if she does what you ask. But isn't that bribing, you may
ask? All you are doing is reinforcing the good behavior you want the child to
exhibit. If we don't correct this indulgent behavior when they're small, we
will have teenagers who won't understand when things "get tough" and
you can no longer supply everything they needs.

mighty way at the prison during the day and at night at the crusade. To God Be
The Glory, great things he has done. Bro. Williams says that the SDA Church was
able to construct a chapel inside the prison grounds, which has an active
