Adventists Continue to Reach Out with Relief

Owing to the cancellation of church services in New Providence on Sabbath, September 25, 2004, because of Hurricane warnings related to Hurricane Jean, the special Relief Offering was not collected. However, today, another opportunity is accorded us to share in alleviating some of the sufferings and discomfort inflicted upon our brethren locally and abroad. Particularly, the Conference will assist the people of Haiti with a financial contribution on Monday of next week. Communication with Dr. Obas, president of the Haitian Union of Seventh-day Adventists revealed the need for assistance of food, clothing and monetary gifts.

Locally, two teams of personnel were dispatched to Abaco and Grand Bahama with water, food and clothing for affected persons. These included Conference officers, Local ADRA director, Pastor T. Basil Sturrup; Health Ministries director, Pastor Paul A. Scavella, ASI President, Dr. Alvira Higgs and Sis. Gigi Gonzales. The damage and havoc wreaked on these places were noticeable, especially in Abaco. The remark "Oh if the planes could only have taken all of the items." was spontaneous. The need at both places required more than we were able to take, nevertheless, Pastor Keith Albury, president of the North Bahamas Mission and his team were grateful for what they received.

Special Offering Given the preceding, I do not have to stress the need for full and total participation from all of us. In fact, many of you have telephoned and written to headquarters wanting to know what you can do. Additionally, some of you have responded with your contributions of $3,000, $1,000, $100 and the like. Thanks to all and thanks in advance for your offerings today. Be assured that our relief efforts will continue in Cat Island and San Salvador. As noted in last week’s Logos, Pastor Sturrup visited San Salvador on Thursday, September 22, and met with Pastor Owusu Boateng, district pastor and the local Administrator. He presented boxes of clothing, 25 cases of water and a cheque for $2,000. Bro and Sis. Cedric Neymour of Grant’s Town Church are to be commended for adding 20 cases of water which were sent to Devil’s Point, Cat Island.

To date, the Conference has spent in excess of $16,000 for the Relief Effort, and the special contribution of members amounted to over $20,000. A million thanks!
