Will You Tell
The Story?
The name Catherine Hankey is possibly one that does not resonate with you
and rightly so, as this
gifted
poet and Sunday school evangelist lived between the years 1834 and 1911.
However, one of her works is probably known by many and it continues to have a
great impact upon lives today. To put it succinctly, the title of this article
is an adaptation of this well-known piece and it describes what is taking
place in your church or district. Yes, there are crusades and efforts in just
about all of our churches heralding and trumpeting the good news of Jesus who
has "come to seek and save the lost." I often recall my own
experience of salvation and how God led me, through some of you, to the
knowledge of His truth. Thus, this fall season of proclamation and reaping
affords us another opportunity to share the love of Jesus in meaningful and
dynamic ways. Says Catherine, "I love to tell the story of unseen things
above, of Jesus and His glory, of Jesus and His love. I love to tell the story
because I know ’tis true. It satisfies my longings as nothing else can
do." Isn’t it a fact that only Jesus can satisfy our longing? And given
the recent hurricanes, there are those who are wondering where was God, while
others questioned what was He doing to us? What a golden opportunity to share
with family, friends and neighbors the love of God!
George Matheson, another hymnologist who lived around the time of
Catherine, was heartbroken
because
of a fiancée who left with little explanation. Possibly tempted to do
something foolish, he latched on to God’s love and penned the famous "O
Love That Will Not Let Me Go." Consider the first stanza: "O Love
that wilt not let me go, I rest my weary soul in Thee; I give Thee back the
life I owe, That in Thine ocean depths it flow May richer, fuller be."
Saints, again I declare, "What an opportune time to share what Christ
means to us!" Your invitation followed by your offer to transport your
guests is certainly one of the ways to share and tell the love of God.
Assisting visitors in finding Bible passages is another. Simply getting
involved is what your pastor and evangelist need from you. To sit and observe
is not enough; for while you are in attendance, and that is good, your pastor
would also welcome your prayer and participation. Together, we accomplish much
for the Master and offer hope.
Today as you meet, remember to pray for Pastor Dannie Major and me as we
proclaim the good news in Landrail Point, Crooked Island. Last weekend it was
my privilege, along with Sister Johnson, to share with the saints in South
Andros at The Macedonia Church. What a time as Sister Johnson and I dealt with
family matters such as communication, marital compatibility and the topic of
love. Indeed, the weekend was beneficial for us as it was for the members and
visitors. Just as you do, I, too, like sharing Jesus. Yes, like Catherine
Hankey "I like to tell the story, more wonderful it seems than all the
golden fancies of all our golden dreams. I love to tell the story—It did so
much for me, and that is just the reason I tell it now to thee." Have a
happy Sabbath and support the effort in your local church. Leonard
A. Johnson, President

Education Corner (This is a weekly
column sponsored by Bahamas Academy of S.D.A.) Last
week, the 90th anniversary celebrations of Bahamas Academy got off to a big
and grand start as the students celebrated with a special assembly and
birthday parties at lunch time on Wednesday, September 29th .
The celebrations continue all this term. The next big event is a basketball
tournament scheduled for October 28 - 31. Look for our advertisements in the
newspaper and on Cable 12. We want to see all old scholars, alumni, and
friends of Bahamas Academy at this event.
We have been talking about Bahamas Academy weekend for some time now, and
believe it or not, this grand event is just around the corner. This weekend is
scheduled for November 19 - 21, beginning with church services and ending with
a gala banquet. The church services will be held at the Hillview Church and
the banquet at the Nassau Marriott and Crystal Palace Resorts.
In preparation for this weekend, we want to form a choir consisting of ALL
former students and alumni of the school. If you ever attended Bahamas Academy
(no matter which year), we want you to be a part of this special choir. A
director has already been chosen (a former student) and songs have already
been identified. A special anniversary theme song has also been written just
for the occasion, so you can't afford to miss one service. Choir rehearsals
will commence as soon as the church crusades are completed. See you there!
The highlight of Bahamas Academy weekend will be the gala banquet planned
for Sunday, November 21, 2004 beginning at 6:30 p.m. At this banquet, our
former Bahamian principals will be honoured for their many years of dedicated
service and marvelous contributions to this Seventh-day Adventist institution.
These pioneers are: Dr. H. A. Roach, Dr. John Carey, Dr. Ruth White, Dr.
Cheryl Rolle, Dr. Althea McMillan (Elementary), and Mrs. Estherlean Ash
(Elementary). Bahamas Academy is what it is today because of the untiring
service rendered by these educators and those who went before, like Elder
& Mrs. James Smith, Miss Enid Wright, Mrs. A. R. Haig, Ms. O. J. Lawrence,
Ms. U.Z. Lawrence, Mr. D. B. Reid, and Dr. & Mrs. Wilfred Liske. I had the
privilege of having Dr. Liske as my supervising instructor during my student
teaching semester at Andrews University and what an honour that was for me!
Many of us are who we are today because of the beginning we had at Bahamas
Academy. Let's thank God for the opportunities He provided for us to receive
an Adventist education as we support and be a part of these celebrations. See
you there!
