From The Principal’s Desk
There
are several hallmarks of youth: boundless energy, a willingness to forgive;
and an almost illogical optimism that too often rationalizes itself into
submission as youth turns to age. Youth says, “I can do all things!” Taken on
its own, this is at best a statement of sheer confidence, but on the lips of
the Christian, it is but half of one of the most basic truths of the Bible. We
simply add “through Christ” and our motto is complete: Through Christ I can do
all things!
Inspired by this powerful tenet outlined in Phillipians 4:13, Bahamas
Academy’s administrators, teachers, support staff, students and parents have
adopted as our motto “I can do my best”. Whether we speak of mental acumen,
physical stamina or emotional fortitude, we accept that the strength we need
to accomplish the goals set for us this academic year will come from our
belief in this principle, to which we committed ourselves in out first chapel
exercise on September 5.
This inaugural assembly also allowed me to introduce to our student body a
number of new members to our school family.
Monique Hepburn and Ada’Lee Jones joined the
Early Learning Centre as K5 teacher and Teacher’s Aide, respectively. The
school board and I are also pleased to announce the return of Music to the
elementary school’s curriculum with the addition of Reginald Forbes to the
teaching faculty. Coralee Carey has agreed to serve as substitute for
fifth-grade teacher, Diane Jones in the first term, and Allerine Munnings has
been engaged to serve as school secretary at the elementary division.
Six teachers have been added to the secondary
division: Hugo James (Mathematics); Trevor Greaves (Phys Ed); Earl Thomas
(Physics and Chemistry); Martin Lalnunsanga (Computers); Lorette Jones
(English); and Marguerite Laguerre (Health Science substitute for the first
term).
Improvements to the physical plant, including roof and bathroom refurbishment,
have been completed in preparation for our returning students, who numbered
911 this year - an increase of almost 5 per cent over last year’s enrolment.
Your financial support has contributed to the
purchase of 30 brand new computers and 12 brand new sewing machines, the
installation of air conditioning in the main lobby and the computerlab, the
procurement of 12 technical drawing desks skillfully built by Mr. Kevin
Rollins, and the opening of a cafeteria at the ELC. I am eager to express my
appreciation both to the Conference Administration for their financial
assistance with this improvement project and to Andrew Hanna and Friends
Construction Company for carrying out the repairs. I would also like to thank
Mr. Howard Barr, Physical Plant Supervisor, for overseeing all of the repair
and maintenance work needed for a smooth opening. We look forward to their
assistance in our upcoming ventures - grounds beautification, wall and fence
repair and science lab upgrade.
Rest assured, however, that our focus for this
year does not lie solely in cosmetic improvements, although we recognize their
urgent need even as we await the completion of our state of the art new school
building. Our commitment to training the head, heart and hand continues.
Through our increased public relations efforts, you will be kept informed of a
number of programmes under consideration to develop students’ thinking and
analytical skills. We also hope to establish a student forum to allow students
to express ideas and voice concerns, and an upcoming coin drive and talent
show will serve as student fundraisers, with donations embarked for the new
school complex. Watch this space and local media regularly for details.
Finally, we anticipate a new year filled with excitement and enthusiasm.
Operation RACE still guides our approach to teaching and learning. Developed
over the course of the last academic period, Operation RACE (Reaching
excellence by Accomplishing Christ-Centered Education) is a comprehensive
school improvement initiative that enables Bahamas Academy to operate at
advanced excellence in Adventist education that motivates, is relevant and
meaningful, and above all, prepares students for life and heaven.
The “community of learners” so vital to this
programme’s success still needs your nurturing and support so that they reach
their highest potential. They still believe that they can do “all” things. At
Bahamas Academy, we assure them that Christ will strengthen them in their
positive pursuits. Dr. Cheryl Rolle, Principal
BA On The Move VBA needs your continued support.
Lend us your hands; together we can do much for the Lord. Again, thank you for
your help on this necessary project. - Winston Ash, VBA President
