From the
Office of The President
In
the office of president one gets any number of messages ranging from good to
not so good. However on Sunday, October 2, while attending the funeral service
for George Hume, I was most gratified (though not surprised) to hear a non
Seventh-day Adventist speak so well of our deceased Brother George Humes. As
if that were not enough he went on to extol the virtues of another Adventist
Taxi Driver, Brother John Musgrove. I need not tell you that I was greatly
impressed. To me those words only underscore the belief that when Christ
possesses us He is seen in the way we dress, eat, conduct business, treat our
spouses, relate to colleagues and people in general. While this non-Adventist
alluded to only two members I know there are many in the Taxi business and in
every profession exemplifying Christ. To me this is the greatest sermon or
witness one can bear. Let me illustrate. On Wednesday evening while attending
the Grant's Town Church crusade, I saw the above- mentioned non-Adventist
gentleman and learned that he was attending the meetings since Sunday evening
following the funeral. Members, a life lived for Christ attracts souls for
Christ.
- Support Your Crusade
- Given the aforementioned I am encouraged
every time we launch a crusade because souls are drawn to the Master,
Jesus Christ, and the church is invigorated. I have visited each
Evangelistic center and I marveled at the unique way God is blessing each
evangelist or presenter. The messages all focus on Christ even though they
are presented in ways reflecting the speaker's personality and style.
However, I would appeal for greater support with our presence. You would
also want to convince at least one of your friends to attend and that
should not be so difficult. After all, he or she is your friend! This
weekend, Johnson Park, Maranatha and Parkgate will launch their series.
Please pray for the Evangelists and support them. Remember to do your
part.

- Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund
- Over ($7000)dollars was given to assist with
the relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Thank you so much for
your contributions. While we did not participate in the national telethon
on Friday, September 30 we did contribute to the same on Monday of this
week. Additionally, we assisted a Bahamian SDA family in the Gulf Coast
area, and will donate the balance of funds to the South Central Conference
and ADRA (Adventist Development Relief Agency). Again thanks for your
generosity which made all of this possible. As we are still in the
Hurricane season I ask that all local church Community Services Leaders
have ready those necessary items in the event that we are required to
respond locally to any disaster. In this vein I ask that such leaders
support the efforts of Pastor Sturrup in organizing for such a possibility
of a storm or hurricane.
- Church Games 2005
- Recently, a letter was circulated expressing
disappointment for the Adventist Denomination's decision to participate in
the upcoming Church Games 2005. To compound this matter the Media listed
the Adventist Church as one of the denominations that would be involved. I
wish to assure you that neither Conference Administration nor the Youth
Department committed the Church. It goes without saying that the Sabbath
would be an issue as well as other factors.
- Bahamas Academy Banquet
I commend to you the Reunion Banquet of Bahamas Academy slated for
October 23, 2005 at the Royal Bahamian Sandals Resort. Committee members
have been working assiduously to obtain ads and sell tickets for the same.
Initial reports point to success. However, it is important that your
church and business are listed in this souvenir booklet. This is a special
one marking Bahamas Academy's 91st birthday. You would not want to miss
the opportunity to showcase your services in this booklet. The proceeds
from this event will go toward the building project of the new school now
in progress on Marshall Road. Your support is needed and should you desire
to do more, there is the opportunity to give directly to the project by
calling us at our Headquarters on Tonique Williams-Darling Highway at
341-4021/2.
- Inspirational Food
- Finally, I urge you to study daily your
Sabbath school quarterly and devotional. Already, I am being blessed with
the emphases coming out from the book of Ephesians. These lessons and
devotional readings should prepare us for our January Convention featuring
the solid and Biblical preaching of Dr. George Brown. Happy Sabbath! -
Dr. Leonard A. Johnson
Building Communities Through Christian/Health Services The
Community Services department
in
collaboration with the health Ministry department seeks to build stronger
communities. The Seventh-day Adventist Church has left an indelible
impression in the area of Community Services throughout the nations of the
world and the Bahamas is no exception.
Thousands of Bahamian citizens all across this archipelago have benefited
from programs and initiatives designed to assist the less fortunate and
those affected by disaster or tragedies.
Likewise, the Health and Temperance Department continues to provide
information and physical activities geared toward improving the health of
our people.
These two ministries of the church bring to life the practical elements of
the gospel in light of III John verse 2, "Brethren I wish above all things
that you PROSPER and be in GOOD HEALTH, even a thy soul prospereth."
- On Sunday, October 16, 2005, the Health
Department and Community Services Department will combine its efforts to
Host the annual exhibition on the R.M. Bailey Park.
Under the theme "Building Stronger Communities Through Christian Service,"
the day's activities will begin with a colourful float parade that will
leave the Conference Office at 9 a.m. on to Tonique Williams-Darling
Highway, North on Blue Hill to Wulff Road on Wulff Road to Marathon Road,
South on Marathon to R.M. Bailey Park for the opening ceremonies.
The rest of the days activities will consist of fun and games for the
children, including a treasure hunt, bouncing castles, ball throwing and
the like. You can also purchase delicious dishes from the many church
booths represented. There will also be food tasting, aerobic exercises, a
variety of health lectures and a massive clothing give away.
For more information, contact the Community Services Leader or Health and
Temperance Leader at your church or call sister Deena McPhee at the
conference office - 341-4021. - T. Basil Sturrup, Departmental. Director
