Adventists Respond to Hurricane Katrina

Local Response   On Tuesday, September 6, 2005, at a special called Ministerial meeting, at the Seventh-day Adventist Headquarters on Harrold Road, Adventist officers and ministers met to formulate a response to assist persons devastated by Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Two positions were unanimously adopted; firstly, it was agreed that an offering would be collected in all local Adventist churches this Sabbath, (Saturday), September 10, 2005, at the 11 a.m. service. Additionally, it was determined that the offering collected would be passed on to ADRA (Adventist Development & Relief Agency) and the Adventist Community Services department to augment their ongoing efforts to provide relief working along with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

In partnership with FEMA Over the past few days, volunteers from the Adventist Arkansas-Louisiana Conference, under Lavida Whitson, Adventist Community Services Director, have been assisting the relief efforts in numerous ways. Working closely with FEMA, the Adventist Community Services Disaster Response volunteers are providing medical evaluation to those persons who've been rescued from housetops. Also, they are giving out blankets, new clothing and personal kits, including toiletries and assisting with transportation to nearby shelters. Adventist volunteers are distributing supplies that are prepackaged and stored in large truck units that supply nearly 1,700 people, which are continually restock.

40,000 Meals Daily Apart from the aforementioned the Florida Adventist Community Services department is providing 40,000 meals a day to the local community and volunteers from two feeding units.

Education Relief   Some Adventist schools in the United States are offering tuition assistance to victims of Hurricane Katrina. For example, Andrews University is offering a year of free tuition to any Adventist student who was enrolled in a university or college whose operation was interrupted by Hurricane Katrina. This plan will cover tuition, fees and books through a combination of government and Andrews University support. Each student who chooses to attend Andrews would then be responsible for room and food expenses of approximately $5,000 per school year, or 25% of the typical overall costs.
To assist with the ongoing efforts you may give a financial contribution at the local Adventist Headquarters on Harrold Road or at any of the local Adventist churches this Saturday, September 10. You may also telephone our Headquarters at 242 341-4021/2 or fax us at 242 341-4088. Let us pray for and contribute financially to assist those in need!  - Dr. Leonard A. Johnson

A Church Building for Acklins A special thank you to those Pastors and Churches who have Pastor Roy Hannagiven in support of the Church van and Gospel Crusade in Lovely Bay, Acklins.
We now have 13 baptized members and a few children who are worshipping every Sabbath in Lovely Bay; but they urgently need a house of worship.
A plan for a building has already been drawn and plans for erecting it are already in progress. Cheques and donations may be made payable to that name at the Bahamas Conference Headquarters on Harrold Road.
This appeal is to all churches, all members of our churches, who are from Acklins, all members who would like to support the work in Acklins and friends of Adventists everywhere.

Important Tips for Group Picnics or Swimming

When a church group or large family plans a picnic at the beach the following guidelines should be followed:

  1. It is important that the event or activity be covered by the appropriate insurance. If in doubt, contact the Conference Office.

  2. As far as possible, find an area where your group could be controlled and seen at all times.

  3. Choose appropriate times for swimming. For example, don't go swimming immediately after eating.

  4. Team up in partners when going in the water. No one should go in the water without a partner.

  5. Choose persons/leaders who are strong swimmers to be in the water and form a human barrier.

  6. No one should go beyond these designated persons.

  7. Persons should also be selected to serve as "lookout" on shore. These persons should have whistles that they could warn of danger.

  8. Blow the whistle at different intervals to indicate that everybody in the water needs to hold and show his/her partner's hand.

  9. Persons trained in C.P.R. or other medical personnel should be a part of a group.
