Joint Forum To Address Church Issues
Pastor Keith Albury - PresidentOn Sabbath afternoon, September 28, all members are invited to share in a forum at the Hillview Seventh-day Adventist Church to address issues emanating from a special committee appointed by the West Indies Union Executive Committee.   It was on June 5 and 6 of this year when the Issues Committee convened in plenary session to address certain issues troubling the Church in some areas, and made recommendations to the Union Executive Committee. Among the issues the Committee considered were Hat Wearing, Wedding Band for Men, Blessing of Babies born out of Wedlock in the Church and Dead Bodies in the Church. The Committee pointed out "anything which is not scriptural should not be imposed arbitrarily on members nor encouraged in our church." It was explained that "The gospel is the basis on which individuals accept Jesus and become members, and nothing else should be required of them except that which is necessary for their salvation and to …increase their devotion, reverence, respect and service to Him." The simplicity of the command of Jesus: must be the imperative of the Church 'Come, follow me' in lowly paths of service free."

After critical and prayerful examination, the Committee made its recommendations regarding each issue. However, the Committee noted that "some of these recommendations may seem to go contrary to things you have been practicing for a long time, but if there is no real Scriptural basis for such practice we must desist and be true to the principles we believe, that our belief and practice are based on the Bible and the Bible only."

Hence at 4 p.m. on the last Sabbath of this month at Hillview, the Issue Committee's recommendations will be discussed and further evaluated. It is the hope of the local Conference's Administration that all members will report for this forum. Time will be allowed for questions and answers. Administration

Children need good role models. As their parents, we should be their first and foremost models. Ellen White reminds us that by the age of 4 or 5, a child’s personality, self-esteem, and behavioral patterns are pretty well formed.

Our children are not casual observers–they take in everything. They watch everybody, especially their parents. They’re like sponges, soaking everything in. Children are listening when we think they’re not listening, and they’re watching when we think they’re not watching.

Our kids need to see consistency in our lives. Dad, if you’re a tyrant at home but you put on the mask of a saint at church, your young children won’t get upset at you–they’ll probably think that your behavior is perfectly acceptable. Our kids learn from us mostly by our actions. If our words are different from our actions, they will give the most weight to what we do.

We need to be aware of some common, subtle practices within the family that could have dangerous repercussions later on if they’re not dealt with now:

Let’s consider the dinner table.

What is our conversation like there? Is it spent building up one another or others, or is it a gossip session in which we concentrate on the negatives? If we spend most of our time criticizing others, should we really be surprised when our children do the same?

If your children question your behaviour and you know you’ve done wrong, do you get defensive or remark, "When you’re an adult, you’ll understand better"? Children no longer ‘buy’ that answer. What’s more, their respect for you will diminish if you’re not willing to admit you made a mistake.

Do you allow your children to see you when you’re hurt, or do you try to hide it from them? It is not a sign of weakness to show emotion or hurt.

Honesty, openness, and willingness are crucial to providing the kind of parental example our children will respect and recognize as genuine. When we’re honest, open, and willing, our children will see that although we may stumble and sometimes fall, we are seeking God’s guidance and doing our best.
