Next Sabbath, September 28, 2002, the Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day
Adventists will conduct an Integrated Evangelism Seminar for all local
church officers, departmental leaders and church members engaged in lay
evangelism. The meeting, which will be led by Dr. Johnathan Kuntaraf,
Associate Personal Ministries Director of the General Conference, takes
place at the Centreville Church, at 4:30 in the afternoon.
In order for the church, the Body of Christ, to accomplish
the purpose for which it was established, there must be synergy, unity,
harmony for there to be proper functioning. Additionally, the matter of
training and proper allocation of human resources in the local church will be
addressed together with insights on the mission of the church (Matt. 28:19,
20).
Jesus not only established His church at a point in time,
but He also committed Himself to build the church throughout time.
Accordingly, in Matthew 16:16 the Lord declares, "I will build my
church." Through His Holy Spirit, Jesus continues to build the church by
inspiring members of its body to service. The church as God's appointed agency
for the salvation of fallen humanity will be the focal point of next weekend's
plenary sessions.
Moreover, Integrated Evangelism seeks to enable further
those called to serve in local church ministries to embrace their elected
offices as channels of service in Christ's stead. IN this light, every
ministry of the local church must have outreach as its primary focus. This
truth is affirmed in the following passage: "It is too small a thing
for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those
of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you
may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth" (Isa. 49:6). A follow up
to the Integrated Evangelism Program is the "Go One Million" Campaign,
which will be launched in our Conference on Sunday, December 1, 2002. May God
inspire us to committed service in His vineyard.-Dr. M.D. Toote

Elders’ Forum on Church Issues will be held on Tuesday, September 24, at 7

Annual Pathfinder March and Rally Tomorrow,
September 22 On Sunday, September 22, 2002, beginning at 200 p.m.,
Pathfinders, Masterguides, Adventurers, Eager Beavers and two lively
Pathfinder Marching Bands are expected to take to the streets of Nassau for
the 2nd Annual Pathfinder Parade and Rally.
Under the theme "Trendsetters," Pathfinders will march in the
formation of their individual churches from Windsor Park to Clifford Park
(Fort Charlotte), demonstrating that there is a healthy alternative to the
many ills that plague our society.
In view of this, all churches are invited to prepare banners portraying the
essence of the theme "Trendsetters" as a healthy alternative.
Churches are encouraged to turn out in full force as we will be marching by
churches. Those without uniforms may march in Pathfinder T-shirts or churches’
colors following the last uniform group.

Grant’s Town Church celebrates Super Sabbath
2002 The eighth annual Super Sabbath of the Grant’s Town Church
was set in grand fashion. The music was glorious and heartfelt. Special
gratitude is expressed to all of our visiting musicians including the Brown
Sisters, Leslie and Jackie Brown, Daranique Mortimer, David, Clayton and Randy
Forbes, Stuart Cherafaunt, the Good News and New Englerston Churches, and Mark
Hanna.
The sermons focused on various aspects of the theme,
"Holy Spirit Come and Deliver Us." All of the preachers were used of
God to meet the needs and feed the flock. On Friday night Pastor Paul Scavella
opened the preaching sessions with a word from Jeremiah [6:1-5]. On Sabbath at
the 8 a.m. service Dr. Michael Toote led the church in a Holy Ghost time. The
Sabbath School period was one where the church shared in the informative
discussion and Bible Study. During the Divine Worship, President K. D. Albury,
in his usual captivating way explored the subject of "Being Filled with
the Holy Spirit." Lunch time came so quickly, many were not even
hungry. Time was of the essence, however, throughout the day, and Chairman
Norman Seymour kept all on a steady course. Thanks to all members of the
Committee.
At 1 p.m., Elder Lionel Johnson, after a busy week and a
hectic day, ascended the sacred desk and God used him in a profound and
powerful way. At 2 p.m. Pastor Edward St. Fleur became a man on fire, and in
an anointed way declared the Word of the Lord.
Sister Brenda Scott and Children’s Hour left everyone
wanting more. Sister Scott, through exhortation and personal testimony,
speaking from her heart, gave the most soul-searching message of the day.
Institutional promotions, church and crusade updates, and
testimonies characterized the 4-5 p.m. session. Mrs. Ann Albury introduced
representatives from Oakwood College and Northern Caribbean University who
encouraged Christian higher education.
Pastor Clarke preached the 6 p.m. session and Dr. Leonard
Johnson capped off the day in dynamic style.
We thank all those members from our sister churches who
came, participated and contributed to a great weekend in the Lord. The theme
song was "Holy Spirit, Thou art welcome in this place."
Congratulations were also extended to Lawyer Sandrena
Florvil-Benjamin, who was called to the British Bar earlier this summer and to
the Bahamas Bar last week.
The church crusade will take place October 6 – 20, 2002
Bible Marathon 2002 On Sunday, September
29 at 5:00 p.m. Bible Marathon 2002 will be officially launched in Rawson
Square, and will be carried live on ZNS-1 for one hour. Dame Ivy Dumont,
Governor- General of The Bahamas, will commence the reading. In recent times
the non-stop reading of the Bible from Genesis to
Revelation on Bay Street has been an annual feature. The Bible Marathon had
its genesis here in the Bahamas May 7, 1978, when Pastor H. A. Roach first
introduced it under a tent on Bernard Road, just east of the roundabout on
Wulff Road. It was opened by the then Governor-General Sir Gerald Cash. This
year marks the twenty-fourth anniversary of Bible Marathons in the Bahamas.
The Bible Marathon legacy was later passed on to Pastor
Jeremiah Duncombe, then Youth Director of the Conference. He took the
programme to Bay Street, first in front of the Nassau Shop (now John Bull) and
eventually to Rawson Square, and the Family Islands. The goal of the program
has always been to encourage the reading of the Bible, especially by young
people. On one occasion the Bible Marathon took the form of an individual
competition to see which young person would be the first to complete the
reading of the entire Bible. Dr. Marvin Smith, who was then a student at
Bahamas Academy, won the first prize. He read the entire Bible in less than
one month. His photograph along with that of his mother Rowena Smith, was
carried in the Nassau Guardian.
The annual Bible Marathon has been taken to several family
islands, including South Andros, Eleuthera and San Salvador. All Nassau
churches, and especially the youth departments of these churches, are invited
to organize their church to provide readers for one hour each day during the
four days it is expected to complete the reading. The support of pastors,
parents and adults is especially requested. -Joan Duncombe
- Education Corner This is a weekly feature
sponsored by Bahamas Academy
- Parents often ask the question: "How can I teach my child
responsibility?" The overall objective for parents of young children
is to teach them that their actions have inevitable consequences. One of
the most serious results of a permissive society is the failure of parents
to make a connection between behaviour and consequences. Too often a
three-year-old child screams insults at his mother, but mom ignores this
behaviour. A first grader launches an attack on his teacher, but the
school makes excuses for his age and takes no action. A ten-year-old is
caught stealing candy in a store, but is released to his parents with no
penalties for his actions. A fifteen-year-old sneaks the keys to the
family car, but his father pays the fine when his son is arrested. A
seventeen-year-old drives the family car like a maniac and his parents pay
for the repairs when he wraps it around a telephone pole!
You see, all through childhood, loving parents seem
determined to intervene between behaviour and consequences, breaking the
connection and preventing the valuable learning that could have occurred. Thus
it is possible for a young man or lady to enter adult life not really knowing
that every move we make directly affects our future, that irresponsible
behaviour eventually produces sorrow and pain.
How can parents connect behaviour with consequences? Here
are some suggestions:
