Eager Beavers, Adventurers, Pathfinders,
Masterguides and T-shirt-wearing Adventists marched from Windsor Park to
Clifford Park to the rhythmic music of our very own Pathfinder Band and
Hillview’s Drum Corps. See
Photos Rivaled by only the armed forces themselves in terms of performance and discipline, the marchers further wooed the crowd of spectators by taking turns saluting conference officials during the march past. After greetings were brought by Pastor Eric D. Clarke, Youth Director, and Pastor K. D. Albury, the keynote address was delivered by the Minister responsible for Social Services, the Honorable Melanie Griffin. She commended the Pathfinders on the theme "Trendsetters," and charged us to be just that in this our Bahamaland -- trendsetters. She stated that with all of the ills affecting our country at this time, it is good to see Adventists taking a stand to make a difference through positive change and aiding in the development of the youth of our nation. She affirmed Jesus as the real Trendsetter. Other notables in attendance at our 2nd Annual Pathfinder Parade and Rally were Pastors Jeremiah Duncombe, Michael Smith, Michael Toote, Andrew Burrows and Basil Sturrup. Grateful thanks go out to all who made the parade and rally a success, especially our pastors, Pathfinder Directors Pedro Rolle, Ray Jennings, Kirk Price, Philip Humes, Akin Barr, Curtis Bryan, Carron Miller, Jace McKinney, The Pathfinder Band, Hillview’s Drum Corps and many others who played such an integral role. Continue to be Trendsetters for Christ. -Barry S. Saunders

Community Services/Pathfinder Expo 2002 The Community Services/Pathfinder Expo will be held Sunday, October 13, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the R. M. Bailey Park. The new buzzword in the church is integration, with specific reference to evangelism. This concept is not new to us, as for many years the concept of the integration of faith and learning in the Adventist system of education has been fostered. This is the wave of the present, and as a church, we look to spreading the gospel in a most efficient and effective way. Isolation in the various ministries must be a thing of the past. Coming together in concert for the harmonious development of the ministries of the church is a must. How can this concept become a reality? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if our school system would have the eight laws of health carved into the learning process at the cafeteria, and other areas? While programs are designed for our youth, must there be an effort to have health integrated into our AYs, socials with potluck lunches at churches, etc.? Certainly, a health fun run/walk could not be successful without the involvement of the youth ministries. In order for this concept to work effectively, the church must have the political will to consider full-time departmental directors in some of these areas who can more efficiently facilitate the integration process. The potential for greater production, and results, would be expected. Integrated ministry seems to be the intent of the apostle John in 1 John 2:9 where he wishes above all things that we may prosper and be in health even as our souls prosper, ultimately effecting integration of evangelism and ministry. Teamwork, togetherness, unity is the goal of the church and the essence of the prayer of Jesus "that they all may be one." Today, beginning at 4 p.m. at the Centreville Church, representatives Dr. Johnathan Kuntaraf and Elder Milton Gregory, of the General Conference and West Indies Union, respectively, will lead out in a seminar on Integrated Evangelism --Lay Involvement.-Pastor Paul A. Scavella, Health Ministries Director This is a weekly feature sponsored by Bahamas Academy However, are we as parents aware that too much TV viewing can also have negative effects on the mental abilities of school-aged children? I read with keen interest a recently-published article in the Adventist Review (November, 2002, Inter-American Edition) on this topic. In case you haven't read it, I decided to share a small section with you: "Television interferes with the child's acquisition of the very tools needed during an entire lifetime, especially in his formal education . . . . Who does not feel disturbed by the evidence from schools indicating that today's students give the impression that they suffer from an epidemic of attention disorders, a depressing lack of language skills and little comprehension of what they read. Teachers tell us that more than ever, students lack analytical ability, creativity and perseverance. "There is a consensus among communication media specialists that children who watch too much television reveal: (1) reading deficiencies, (2) language use deficiencies, and (3) low levels of concentration, creativity and imagination. To what can we attribute this deplorable situation? According to Marcia Winn, when a person watches a lot of TV, it interferes in the development of the left hemisphere of the brain, the side of the brain that specializes in verbal ability. When you speak and read to a child, however, or better yet, when the child himself reads, the left hemisphere is stimulated and the linguistic abilities increase. In Winn's opinion, reading: (1) promotes concentration due to the demand for more complex mental operations than when watching TV; (2) reading enriches vocabulary, and (3) it helps develop writing ability. What about the lack of imagination in children who watch television a great deal? The problem is that the images viewed on TV are created by others, exactly the opposite to what happens when the child reads. When reading, the children themselves create scenes in which the people they read about come alive." Maybe it's time for us to revisit our feelings on this topic. For most parents, television is such an easy "babysitter," and it frees us from having to spend time with our children. Our children are too precious for us to sit back passively and allow the devil to use this medium not only to destroy their spiritual values, but also their ability to use their God-given mental acumen to its fullest potential.
