The Bahama Islands land mass is 5,382 square miles
(13,940 sq km) and covers a total area (land and sea) of almost
100,000 square miles (Twice the size of Florida) from southeast of
Florida to just north of Cuba. The population is 300,529 (2002 est).
The distance from Abaco in the north to Great Inagua in the South is
almost 600 miles. Crooked Island is 275 southeast of Nassau.
Miami, Florida is 145 miles west of Nassau. Inagua is just 40 mile
north of Cuba. The largest island is Andros - 2300 square miles
with a population of about 10,000. New Providence, the smallest
major island of 80 square miles, has a population of 200,000. There
are more that 700 islands in the Bahamas with over 2000 islets and
cays. However, there are only 27 major inhabited islands. These
islands are serviced by the National Flag Carrier,
Bahamasair, and many other small
private airlines. Charters are also available.
