
Elaine E. Sands, wife, mother,
church worker, and police officer. Elaine Sands is an
outstanding member of the Royal Bahamas Police Force. On
March 22, 2007, Elaine Sands was promoted to the rank of Superintendent of Police.
She is also officer in charge of
the police community relations section at Police Headquarters, East
Street Nassau. As the highest ranking Adventist police officer on
the force, she represents the church and her God in a dignified way
on a daily bases.
Although Superintendent Sands was born in Nassau, her parents sent her to live
for a few years in Cat Island, a quiet Bahamian island, with her
grand aunt and uncle, Leon and Lucinda Banister, who were members of
the Adventist Church in Bennetts Harbor, Cat Island. They wanted her
to begin her education on that island. While living there, she
accepted Jesus as her personal Savior and got baptized at age
eleven.
Elaine has been married to Leevan Sands, a retired police officer,
for twenty-six years. They have four children. Two are in college
abroad and one just completed college in Alabama. Their last child
is in grade school. Elaine is an active member of the Centreville
Seventh-day Adventist Church, Nassau where she serves as an usher.
When you go to church on Sabbath morning, you will be greeted by her
warm smile and her friendly spirit.
As the officer in charge of community relations, Elaine is
responsible for the domestic violence intervention and prevention
training for all police officers and front line workers. She also
conducts follow-up on domestic matters reported to the police. She
is also responsible for integrating relevant law enforcement and
social agencies into active partnership in the fight against
domestic violence.
Superintendent Sands has a passion for serving people and helping those who are
hurting. She is a humble, warm, friendly, kind, and generous
Adventist Christian. She is actively involved in many community
projects helping to fight against crime and conducting seminars
about domestic violence all over The Bahamas. She has received
extensive training in domestic violence education from the
University of South Florida and the Northern Caribbean University.
Superintendent Sands hobbies are listening to contemporary gospel music,
sports, and helping others.
Mrs. Sands joined the royal Bahamas Police
Force on June 9, 1976 and steadily moved through the ranks
from Constable to an Assistant Superintendent of Police.
Her hard work and dedication is indicative of the fact that she
received awards fro meritorious service, long service and good
conduct.
She received the worldwide Certified
Managers designation from the institute of Certified Professional
Managers in Virginia, in conjunction with the College of the
Bahamas. She is also a certified First Aid Instructor and has
recently received a post graduate certificate in Criminal Justice
and Police Management from Bramshill Police Training College in
conjunction with Leicester University, England, where she also
graduated as valedictorian. Superintendent Sands holds an Associate of Arts
degree in Human Resources Management, with honours.
She is one of the official Domestic
Violence Intervention and Prevention Trainer for the Police Force.
She received her Domestic Violence Intervention Training at the
University of the West Indies, Jamaica and the Harrel Centre for the
study of Family Violence at the University of South Florida, College
of Public Health, Davie, Florida. She travels throughout the
Commonwealth of the Bahamas conducting workshops and seminars. She
also conducts follow-up on domestic complaints and juvenile matters.
She is the mother of four (4) children as
was married for 26 years to a former Police Officer. She has two
sons and two daughters. Her eldest son holds the National record
for the Bahamas in Triple Jump: is a bronze medalist in the 2003
World Games held in Paris, France, he is also an Olympian and a
graduate of Auburn University, Alabama. The second son and eldest
daughter are both pursuing degrees abroad and the last daughter is
in grade school.
