New
Company Launched in Central Andros
On Sabbath, April 12, 2008, history was made in Central Andros as a
new company of believers,
known as the Central Andros Company of Seventh-day Adventists, was
officially launched. (a company is a small group
of Adventists worshipping together in a remote area which usually
forms a nucleus for a church) This company, we are certain, will
grow to become the sixth Adventist Church on the Island of Andros.
Andros is located east of the island of New Providence and is 27
times larger than New Providence.
The new company is
worshiping in the Central Andros Public High School, Love Hill, near
Fresh Creek, Andros.
Andros is 108 miles
long and 46 miles, approximately 2,300 square
miles with a population of 10,000. Currently there are
two
two pastoral districts on Andros: North and South. With this new Company
in Central Andros, soon another pastoral district will be organized.
However, the Lowe Sound Church in North Andros is nurturing this new
company. Mark Ewen is the pastor for the Lowe Sound Seventh-day
Adventist Church.
Members from the Lowe Sound and Red Bays Churches drove down for the
special service which was held at the Central Andros High School in
Love Hill, Andros.
As members and visitors arrived, they were greeted warmly by Dennis
Nichols and invited to sign the guest book. Deaconesses, Aura
Palacios and Edith Darrell along with our capable young people and
the rest of the team were on hand to assist and ensure that
everyone’s needs were met. Our hearts were blessed during
Sabbath School to hear Bro Nichols share Pastor Johnson’s mission
story about the Lindens family here in the Bahamas. This was
followed by a lively Lesson study by Michael Smith, the first elder
of the Lowe Sound Church. Then we were truly “standing
on Holy ground” as the divine service began.
The Lowe Sound Youth Choir “Lifted the Savior Up” as they sang to
His honor and Glory. Then Sis Darrell, though recently widowed, led
the children’s ministry time with volunteers and puppets singing
songs of praise to God. Elder Kenny Deveaux delivered a
powerful message about trusting God. He encouraged us to observe the
three P’s: participation, presence, and prayer in order to succeed
as a company. He presented the new company leader, Velinda Rolle,
and the experienced treasurer, Elder Luis Palacios, with a gift from
the conference and some tracts. Pastor Mark Ewen, the district
Pastor, gave warm remarks and said a special prayer for them. Sis
Rolle responded with words of encouragement for members in every
district to aspire to higher service for the Lord.
A delicious vegetarian buffet dinner followed the service. Sisters
Sadielyn Frue and Palacios, and the rest of the team did an
excellent job of having the food so beautifully laid out, including
a salad bar, interesting gluten entrees, and other delicacies.
Later a team went around the neighborhood “putting God’s love into
action” by inviting people to visit the new church company, praying
with persons who were sick or bereaved, and giving out the surplus
food along with some of the new tracts. More than 20 people were
contacted, including the district Administrator.

On Saturday
night, April 5, 2008, at the Eighth National Teacher of the Year
Awards for the Ministry of Education, Marcia Denise Musgrove,
an Adventist teacher, was chosen from among 12 finalists as the
Teacher of the Year for the period 2008-2010. The National Teacher
of the Year Award program is for teachers of 159 public schools
located on sixteen islands in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.
The theme for the
gala event held at the British Colonial Hilton, Nassau, was,
"Celebrating Quality Teachers: Achieving Our Dreams through
Education.” As reported in the Nassau Guardian for April 5, 2008,
“the National Teacher of the Year winner receives $7,000 in cash
prizes from the Ministry of Education and local law firm Higgs and
Johnson; a weekend stay at a local resort, an all-expense paid trip
to an international conference and the prestigious Crystal Lamp of
Learning.”
Marcia Musgrove,
a member of the Grant’s Town Seventh-day Adventist Church, Nassau,
The Bahamas, is a science educator posted at C.V. Bethel Senior High
School, Nassau. She is a Biology and Marine Science instructor,
coordinates the Magnet Marine Science program and is homeroom
teacher for Grade 12 C 1. Marcia is the second Adventist teacher
in five years to be chosen as the Teacher of the Year in The
Bahamas. She is a graduate of Bahamas Academy, the College of The
Bahamas, and the College of Charleston in South Carolina where she
completed a B.Sc. in Marine Biology (summa cum laude).
When asked what
she enjoys most about being a teacher, she responds, “I enjoy the
energy and enthusiasm of youth, the intellectual stimulation of
learning, the opportunities for personal growth in an environment
that is demanding and socially dynamic, and most of all the
privilege of helping to build the community and nation I envision,
by stretching the minds of my students with new thoughts,
experiences, hope and possibilities.”
Ms. Musgrove was
selected as Teacher of the Year for C.V. Bethel, the Southeastern
District of public schools and on April 5th 2008, she was
awarded the title of ‘National Teacher of the Year 2008-2010’ during
an awards ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Education, Youth, and
Sports & Culture. She also received awards for professional
development, outstanding contributions to education and teaching
proficiency. She attributes her success as a teacher to an
‘on-growing’ faith in God and expresses gratitude to many of her own
teachers who inspired her career choice, especially Cleome Burrows,
Edward Rolle and Ruby Major.

Rewarding Obedience
- “If ye be willing and obedient, ye
shall eat the good of the land” Isaiah 1:19(KJV)
- By Patrice
Williams-Gordon
For
many years my parents enjoyed a reciprocating relationship with
regards to flowers, Mom planted and tended and Dad looked on with
pride at a job well done. However, in recent times, by beholding
long enough he has become changed and now is actively involved in
the process of acquisition of new varieties to the ever-expanding
garden and green house. On one of their frequent trips into the
city, his eyes caught glimpse of a fern- covered wall. His curiosity
soon became intrigue as he began to imagine his own wall in like
splendor. Mom shared his excitement and soon he was convinced to
stop and ‘acquire’ a small bit. After all, this could not possibly
make a difference to this densely covered wall. His instant
daydreaming was rudely interrupted by his conscience, reminding him
of the need to receive permission.
First he tooted the
horn, after waiting without a response, he got out of the car and
ring the gate bell. After being acknowledged over the intercom, the
electronic gate slowly opened allowing them to drive through. As the
gate closed behind them, they were both invited into an
unforgettable experience; there they stood, surrounded by some of
the most beautiful and exotic plants they had ever seen. The
home-owner had a thirty-year collection of orchids and was the
recipient of several
international horticultural awards. Gerberas, Anthuriums, a wide
collection of ferns, and orchids of all colors, shapes and origins
all competed for their attention; there were even hybrid orchids,
which the owner developed himself.
The feast to their
eyes was second to none they ever before experienced but in
addition, they received cuttings, suckers, plant care manuals and
tons of good advice. To think that they could have missed all
this…..just beyond the wall.
It lead me to think
of how many times we have traded life-changing experiences for
instant gratification and self righteous rationalizations…. “The
Lord understands” we muse. We begin our
day shuffling
responsibilities around until the morning devotion becomes
impossible …it’s now noon. We make lifestyle choices about food,
exercise and time-management and somehow manage to cheat ourselves
out of a great life. We are aware of the right way to go but
rationalize our consciences into submission. The angels of heaven
many times stand disappointed as they hover over us bearing gifts we
fail to receive. The reminder comes to us “But seek ye first the
kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be
added unto you.”
